Why so? It could be argued that "alright" is more friendly as it suggests an interest in how the customer is feeling rather than simply acknowledging their presence.

Well, if you put it that way, I might as well speak to customers exactly as how I speak with my mates...

Yes, well, I was there, and by the tone of the way she said it, it was not an enquiry to my health or mental state, so don't tell me what you think she was implying. Saying 'arrrright?' is just crap imo. I was taught to say hello to people. It's REALLY easy. It's people like you and many others in this thread that don't care how others speak which is why the english language is going downhill fast.

Ah yes, because throughout history Tesco workers and builders always spoke in standard English.

I personally blame the parents, surely they should be keeping tabs on their childs accent and colloquial language!

BROKEN BRITAIN INDEED!

Yeah... a language is going downhill...

i am not a fan of this alright, you alright, alright non sense. When someone says alright to me, i always reply with hi.

But i think there are linguistic plagues that can take over, fairly easy, one of them was basically, a while ago everyone was saying basically the whole time. Not so much anymore. Now i have a problem with saying, how about, the whole time i am saying, how about....

this other guy at work always starts sentences with, at the end of the day..

lol

.."you alright?" (making it sound like "yourrite") or even "Alright?" instead of "Hello" or "Good Afternoon" or even just "Hi". I was in Sainsbury's today and this girl said " You alright?" with no smile on her face. Common as muck :p. It's a petty point I know, but why don't these places train their staff to speak a little more professionally instead of these girls sounding like they think you're their mate from down the road. Is it really that difficult to say "Hello" or do these chavy girls get embarrassed to speak proper english :p

That will really be customer service. :D

I can just imagine the conversation in my head....
Customer: "I thought the soap was buy 1 get 1 half price?"
Me: "Ha !! You need to go to spec savers mate, if customers were always right, we'd be ****ed."
Customer: Walks out quietly...

English isn't going downhill, it's evolving (except the retarded mistakes people make).

Just look at the English language a couple of hundred years ago.

In another 10 years we'll all just be grunting at each other!

:p

Curse those pesky check out operators that actually acknowledge your presence and greet you in an ever-so slightly informal manner.

If I were in charge they would rue the day I tells ye, RUE THE DAY!

It makes more sense than some of the English used now. :D

Yeah, today we have the British Slanguage.

Innit, nah wot ah meen laaike, basically, end of the day, you know, safe, arrite, you're joking me, big it up, Yo, Sup, wha chew trippin foo..

Excellent evolution
