Would you like all your games on Steam?

Ive heard of plenty of people that have had their steam accounts hacked or lost, and I never said that I'm in offline mode all the time. Steam just happens to switch itself on automatically all the time.

Actually, I'm just still strongly peeved off about Civ 5 having to require steam to work, and having had to cancel my Pre order.

I dont consent to having to playing any boxed retail game through Steam, so if I wanted to play Civ 5, yes I would definately consider steam to be Malware.

Steps to enjoy Civ V:

1. Set Steam Friends to "Offline".
2. Disable "Notifications"
3. Set Civ 5 to "Never Update Automatically"
4. Disable "Steam Community" In-Game
5. Once ran once, Set Steam to "Offline Mode"
6. STOP BEING A TOTAL IDIOT

Although, I doubt anything we say is going to change your mind.

I assume your house and head are covered in tin foil anyways.

Ah the mystery of 'here-say'. The guy down the pub is not a reliable source of information.

It switches itself on automatically? Lolwut? Could this have anything to do with you maybe not bothering to look in options and turn off 'start up with windows' or perhaps you're attempting to use a game that requires it and you're just trolling?

That combined with the number of people who DONT get their accounts hacked.

You very rarely see people posting to say "Hey, my accounts not been hacked".

That combined with the number of people who DONT get their accounts hacked. Google it.

Possibly losing an account with tens to even hundreds of games that I paid for through no fault of my own is far bigger a concern to me and too much of a risk that isnt worth taking.

I think the way you can communicate with your friends through steam while playing a game and can even browse the web in-game is fantastic.

How many people have genuinely lost an account 'through no fault of their own'?

Everyone says that at first but I can't remember the last time it didn't eventually boil down to 'oh maybe it was when i typed my password into www.FAKEHACKERS.STEAM.com' or 'perhaps that MW2 mod from www.xxgthdhe33445.xhack.tu was a bit dodgy'

I view Steam as a wolf in sheeps clothing if i'm honest. Everyone raves about it and how it's the hero but there's many bad things about it:

Price: Competition of online and highstreet stores push down prices. If steam was the one and only distributor we'd all be paying £30-35 for all new releases. Instead, thanks to competition, i got starcraft 2 on release day for £27, lovely.

Second hand market: The second hand market wouldn't exist if Steam was the only platform. I don't often sell games second hand but i do like to have the option if the game is rubbish.

'Peace of mind': I just don't like the idea of Steam having control of access to ALL of my Steam games. If my Steam account is banned, i lose all of my games. The only situation i can see this happening is a friend being stupid and installing hacks on my computer without consulting me, which ok is my own fault and i should be banned from a game for that. But losing access to ALL of my games? Potentially hundreds of pounds worth of stuff for one infraction in one game? Doesn't make sense to me.

Downloading: I have a rubbish internet connection thanks to Virgin bandwidth throttling. Downloading a whole game is a chore for me. Yes i could get a better net connection but, aside from Steam, i don't need it for any of the other things i use it for.

I like steam, i really do, but i feel it's found its niche in the market and should stay where it is. I don't want it becoming the one and only distribution platform.

"Valve may terminate your Account or a particular Subscription for any conduct or activity that Valve believes is illegal, constitutes a Cheat, or which otherwise negatively affects the enjoyment of Steam by other Subscribers."

I cheat in every single-player game that I own.

We wouldnt be paying £35... Activision are charging £45 for Starcraft 2 on Battlenet...

I fell off my chair when I saw that... slightly off topic, I hate Activision :)

No it doesn't make sense, which is presumably why that doesn't happen.

I was under the impression that if a cheat was detected in say, counterstrike source, your steam account would be banned and along with that all of your games would be taken away from you? Please do correct me if i'm wrong.

I don't cheat, but i often let my friends use my computer to game as some haven't been as fortunate as myself to be able to afford a gaming computer. I trust them to not do anything stupid but if they did i'd fork out for a new copy of a game without complaint as it was my own fault. But to lose access to ALL of my games for that sort of infraction?

Surely that strengthens my point? With no way of competition publishers would have complete control over what price their games were sold for on steam. £45 for all activision games ahoy!
