Mafia II Thread

On the 3rd chapter. All seems a bit GTA4 to me (storyline, missions etc). Also the screen tearing is a bit annoying.

I wish there was some kinda side missions on this, such as when you're trying to join the family. Go round extorting businesses, slapping people about, even buying and owning businesses would be nice.

I've noticed on the Mafia II map there is a looped railway system that's in the game. However, I've never seen any trains on it nor can you seem to access any stations. Can anyone confirm whether you can board the train as a fast travel mechanism? I know you used to be able to get on the tram in Mafia I.

I must say that I purchased this game before reading 'that' review, but after having bought it, played it and completed it the day it came out I have to say I was left thoroughly disappointed. I'm only glad I actually bought the PC version, I'd have thought that the developers would have at the very least eradicated the horrific screen tearing that was present in the demo on the console versions, but obviously that was beyond them, lucky I have a PC.

Anyway, that isn't my major beef, for the most part the graphics in this game are fine, there's a few bits and pieces that look really nice, especially on PC with full detail, but apart from that it's not a game I'd sit there and just admire, the graphics function, that's just my opinion of course, other people may think they're the best thing since sliced bread, but I disagree.

My major problem with this game is firstly the lack of content. There is NOTHING to do, no wonder you don't even get to free roam at the end of the game. What is the point in spending all of that time designing a good looking city, which could have been full of interesting features and then filling it with nothingness? In fact, between missions there is nothing to do, and I played the entire game convincing myself that when the story was finished I'd have been given some side missions or something to keep me occupied, how wrong I was. You just go from mission to mission driving the cars which on simulation settings have the handling characteristics of a boat, and on the normal settings stick to the road like glue and have brakes that the Ferrari F1 team would be proud of. There's a few clothes shops which contain pretty much the same outfits barring one or two shops which sell the more expensive suits, and why does every single suit force you to wear a hat? Not only that but I find the clothing pointless because the game forces you to wear a vest and pants after every chapter anyway, and the chapters aren't exactly long, so having to change my clothes constantly every 25-30 minutes it not something I really want to have to do.

There's no taxi's to help you around the city when you get fed up of driving the terribly mundane cars, there's no side missions whatsoever, I don't count being able to drive a car into a crusher and run up a little flight of stairs to press a button as a side mission, because, well, it's not a mission. The money is totally irrelevant also because there's no reason to spend it. I went through the entire game without ever having to buy a single weapon, also, what is the point in buying gas at the petrol stations? You never run out of petrol, it's an absolutely pointless feature that adds nothing to the game. Also, you get taken to a strip club in a mission, do you ever get to go there again? No.

In short it's just mission after mission and barring the hotel bombing mission and the prison section there is absolutely nothing in this game that one of the GTA's hasn't done years and years ago. And yes, I will compare this game to GTA because they are two games in the same genre, of course they're going to get compared. As for the whole, the game is driven by the story, well it has to be because there's sweet f.a else for it to be driven by. No side missions, hardly any character background whatsoever, what do you learn about Vito? Apart from he fights in the war which takes you all of 5 minutes to complete, and his father is dead. Ooh, great, that gives me a huge idea of what this guy is like, although, I suppose the game does give you a slight indication, and that indication is that your character is an idiot who just blindly follows orders no matter what they are, because according to the game you have no morals. You deal drugs despite most of the families saying they are against it, you beat up the innocent dock workers despite knowing your father was a dock worker at the exact same warehouse, you kill indiscriminately apart from one occasion in the game which bites you in the ass anyway. It's an absolute joke.

The game could have been way better than it was, it's a massive disappointment and the fact the story only lasts about 7 or 8 hours at best is a complete joke. In contrast I paid £29.99 for this and it's given me around 8 hours, I paid £4.99 for GTA4 in the Steam sale and that's given me so many more hours than this and I haven't even finished it. Then there's the side missions and a good multiplayer. Mafia 2 has none of those and I just get the feeling that some people are blindly saying this is a 10/10 game purely because of the name and the graphics. It's lacklustre, it's not a **** game by any means, but it's nowhere near 10/10 in my books, it is distinctly average.

Have to agree with killswitch. I give this 6/10. The storyline and missions within are good (Probably 8/10 here) but because they is absolutely nothing to do except them and finding wanted posters this brings the score down to a 6.

I didn't feel any sort of connection with the city because they is sod all interaction with it. If you can crush or export cars why not at least provide us with a list of certain types of vehicles to give it a purpose.

The game isn't worth nothing more then a rental as you can pretty much complete it in around 8-10 hours. I just need to finish off a few more achievements then I'll be finished with it.

A huge amount was cut from this game in terms of missions, characters and content. Maybe a little excessive, but it was also supposed to branch into 6 different endings too.

The reason that some people hate this game.(the linearity) is the same reason i love it, i hate free roaming games, and much prefer a story driven narrative etc, without all that wandering off to do silly little side missions, its a story driven action game , and that suits me fine:)

I can't help but laugh at people saying it's a story driven game. The story is basic, and not very good at that. Joe and Vito are the only characters who develop properly, and seeing as how Vito is the playable character, that's quite poor. Look at the time that elapses from start to finish. The most that happens to the characters is they get a new car and their house interior changes a bit. :(

Monsters Inc The Game had a story too. Doesn't mean it's a fantastic story driven game.

oh i thought monsters inc had an incredible heart warming story??

I don't get the comparisons with GTA. That's a sandbox game, Mafia isn't.

And for that I'm grateful, the side missions in the Rockstar games bored me silly, all filler.

Give me linearity any day:D

Wow, that made no sense whatsoever. You talk about filler yet Mafia 2 has a variety of missions cut out from GTA3. In fact, there are more varieties of missions in GTA3, and that is a game that came out in 2001. This game is a 7 and a half hour long mess. The graphics can't make up for the fact that the story is rubbish. It's a complete shambles, because made men often go around switching families with careless abandon, while the other families clearly don't think this is a problem and actually encourage it. The game is inaccurate in portraying the life of a mafia member, just read any one of the acclaimed books such as Cosa Nostra or Wiseguy, this is a terrible, 10 year old child's portrayal of how the Mafia works, it's absolute trash but some people here obviously don't care about any kind of back story, any kind of REAL character development, any kind of loyalty toward a family that has apparently made you into a member. It just shows that a lot of people in this thread are happy as long as they get to shoot things, cool.

I can see where you are coming from K1LLSW1TCH, I quite enjoyed the story but it wasn't the best I agree. Some things didn't make a great deal of sense and parts of it did feel rushed.

That said, it is a decent enough game but nothing really epic as people may have expected.

Certainly not a 4/10 in my book anyway.

Thanks. :)

I wouldn't say 4/10 either, but I think the most I'd personally give it is 6/10. Obviously I don't think that my opinion is a fact and therefore the game is rubbish because I understand it's purely subjective, what I found to be average other people have loved, yourself included. I just think it could have done much better given the game that it is following and given the setting and the well crafted city. It's just a shame that there's no content besides the story missions and I feel that the story was not very well accomplished, not true to life and with no real progression of any of the characters. I'm not annoyed at it, more like hugely disappointed really.

Well finished it on hard today and thought it was great !

Just over 10 hours play time i think it was.

Really enjoyed it, definitely a 8/10 for me the story was great.

Next game on the list Metro 2033.
