Quite obviously not for me, but for a friend of mine. He's looking to chop in his E46 M3 for something else for not much other reason than he's bored. He was looking at CSLs but thinks that one would be too similar to what he has now and has realized that 996 Turbos seem to be well in his price range.

I know we have some Porsche fans here so I thought I'd ask a few questions on his behalf.

Is sub £30k really enough for a DECENT 996 Turbo?

If so, do you think that prices will hold steady over the next couple of months/years? I personally can't see values dropping too much, but then you've got to remember being the first watercooled 911 the 996 hardly has the following of it's older brothers, so is perhaps unknown territory.

Any particular weaknesses to bear in mind. Mechanically are they sound or do they have issues?

This is an odd question to ask with a £30,000 motor, but the subject modifying has been brought up - Does anyone know if they response well to (relatively cheap) modifications?

Another odd question, but does anyone actually have any DIY experience of working on them? He'd like to be able to have as much work as possible done in house at our dealer. Actually come to think of it, would having work done at our dealer rather than a Porsche specialist/dealer absoultely wreck resale values?

Sorry for the odd questions, but this is unknown territory for both of us.

He's planning on seeing this at the weekend, thoughts?:

Any other possible suggestions? Needs to be quick and cost £30k or less? At the moment the shortlist consists of the CSL, SL55 AMG and the 911

P.S, what do we reckon the Part Ex value of a 52 plate, 51k mile DSG M3 is? Parkers said 9.2k, but that seems ridiculously under valued?

Cheers

Tell him to see what 911virgin have got in stock.

Bomb proof engine if looked after, better than the standard 996 engine.

Dont discount tiptronic ones, they actually drive better than the manual in my drunk opinion.

I just cant read no more of that post Joshy im ****ed :)

Dunno what spie did, i just think the power delivery of a 996 turbo suits a tip better than a manual.

Also you have the advantage of being able to plod about in traffic without a clutch.

specialst cars of malton have 2 of these in stock. They're a very well respected porsche specialist garage.

bit far north if your friend is local however.

Tuning wise they respond well, engine is solid and they respond well to remaps. Their is a forum that sounds something like rennlist or something, loads of guys with 996 Turbos there.

Think 550-660BHP comes reasonably easy without costing the earth.

But I'd rather get a 997 C2 / C4 in all honesty as the 997 is a much better car handling and driving dynamics wise to a 996. So I'd buy the slower the 997 myself and get a newer better car.

But if he wants epic acceleration and 30k is the max budget then 996 Turbo is damn quick.

As said before, the engines are very solid and reliable if maintained correctly. Excellent cars to drive, the 997 maybe a better rounded car to drive, but the 996 is not far off, and 420bhp standard shifts a lot quicker than a NA 997. Handling is still excellent. Some reports say the 997 Turbo lost some of the 996 magic.
Im not an owner, just my opinion.

Not much quicker cross country, rapid and secure car the Turbo but buy from well reputed people as there are lots and lots of dogs out there. Will cost big if it goes wrong though and it's an 80k car not a 30k car when it comes to running costs. Wouldn't touch a tip myself, each to their own but saps the car when pushing on as it's slow and cumbersome in use. Another 15k would get you a sorted GT3, not as easy to live with but much more special.

I couldnt buy a 996 turbo simply for the fact I adore 997 turbos and the jealousy pangs would do my head in!

997 turbo in white, hello!

why can't women appreciate them and want houses and horses instead :(

wow.... stunning vfm

ive always had the hots for a 964 turbot (ive got to work on the 928 this weekend, the parents need garage space back!)

for the record 993 turbos are still my all time favourite cars closely followed by the eb110! not so sure I'll own either but they both make me melt like a lolly on a hot day

Plenty of money for one of those now, i dont think i could justify that when a 997 can be had for similar money.

precisely why I shall never own one, I'm sorely tempted to join a few of those super car voucher clubs, few grand a year and I get a decentish super car every couple of months - would satisfy my random car craving quite well! all my mates who used to have decent expotica have picked up wife like diseases and sold them for chelsea tractors and rs4/6's (no offence housey :p)

whilst im rambling close to being off topic I'd also like a yellow gallardo, she doesnt like yellow.....

Those wife things are a menace, best to get them a horse and a building project on the go, then sneak out and buy cars :)
