So, how many languages can you speak?

Are people taking a really loose definition of "fluent", does this thread disproportionately attract truly multilingual people, or is there a lot of fibbing going on?

I was just thinking this.

I suppose that most people who don't speak more than English (or a certain Language at GCSE level like most of us can, or could) might not bother posting in here so it seems like there is a bit more fibbing than there actually is.

Working with people from the continent, I realised I had to up my game, I did, and this forum has helped, but what is sad, is people (foregners) constructing better English than us, considering it's their 2nd language,. Hoe ignorant are we, we expect everyone else to speak English, even though it is the world wide language. I think we are pretty much passed most other languages, if not in the next 4 years, the next 10. It will happen.

I tried learning German for 3 years and failed, I lived in Holland for nearly a year thou I have since forgotten pretty much everything but I'm sure I'd remember more if I had to speak dutch again.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say there.

What he is trying to say (ironically) is that he believes foreigners learn to speak in a better constructive manner then us. Possibly due to unsuffering from local bad habits and slang.

I believe he is also trying to say that english speakers take it for granted that everyone in the world speaks english so there is no need for them to learn another language, while most foreigners will learn and are willing to speak english. He probably has never been to France, Italy or Germany.

English - Native, fluent
Dutch - Advanced conversational level (Lived there for 3 years). Near fluent
German - Conversational level (worked there for 9 months)- Intermediate

I've travelled all over the place and have found that most people speak such reasonable English that I never really had to learn another language.

I can get by in Spanish and I can speak and understand Arabic (essential for my previous occupation), but writing it down is something else entirely.

My wife is fluent, (by fluent I mean as good as a native speaker) in Japanese, several Chinese dialects and Russian. She can't spell in English for toffee though.

Is English just a very difficuilt language in comparison to others or something?

No but Japanese have a harder time learning English.

It's just as hard for them to learn english as it would be for you to learn japanese/chinese/arab due to the change of alphabet.

I can only speak English fluently :(

Know some Kazakh, Russian and Czech but definitely not fluent in them.

Engrish

And i small bit of chav :p

Ive always wanted to learn a new language but im not sure what i would go for, as i would like it to benefit me in some way. At work we have drivers from all over so learning just one would not benefit me at work either
