Pro Evolution 2011

This isn't growing on me the more I play it, it just feels clunky and slow in comparison to fifa.

At times it's like trying to control a ride on lawnmower with a commadore 64 joystick!

Yep, vast majority of posts I've read on other forums have been very positive.

Almost seems like some people here are playing a completely different game.

I really fail to see how there can be any good reviews, played it last night along with about 4 other friends in the room, and we all agree its REALLY bad.

Oh well that's that then. I guess it must be bad.

:D

I'm starting to enjoy it now, much more so than before but there's still something that really, really bugs me. Next time you play the demo put the difficulty on its lowest setting so you don't keep getting hounded by the opposition, then pass it to someone in space and just dribble in a straight line for a while, look at the ball and look at the players feet, it doesn't look natural at all, and it's a shame because the running/dribbling is my only reservation about this game so far, okay the sound effects aren't amazing but who cares?

I've done about 10 games, and its interesting.

Sometimes things flow nicely and it feels quite impressive, most of the time its a bit meh and some of the animations are quite awful. (Dribbling etc) :p

Its certainly decent from what I can see, but I'm not sure I'd take it over FIFA 10, and FIFA 11 will certainly build well on FIFA 10 so should blitz it quite easily.

My issues still are:

1) Dribbling animation is really poor - looks like the ball is jumping from players feet
2) Running animation looks they are running on something that has less friction than grass which is the opposite to what happens to the ball which appears to 'jump' when dribbled...
3) I dont know who cuts the grass but the ball seems to slow down too much - its more realistic than FIFA but its just a bit too harsh considering the surface - be interesting to see how this changes with weather conditions.
4) How animations fit together looks very awkward - players look ungainly when changing direction/speed/shielding the ball...
5) Too often a player can pick up a pass thats been directed to a crowd of players - magically either the crowd parts or makes no attempt to stop the ball. Its like its given me too much assistance which negates how harsh it normal deals with poor passes - just not consistent enough.
6) When playing a through ball a tap of power may mean it plays it to not to the nearest player, but then sometimes it does it to the nearest player as Id expect. Maybe Im messing up the direction but Id rather it just do poorly directed weak through ball (as per the power Ive added) than magically pass to something with the correct pace which breaks any realism of control.
7) When the ball is loose, all the players become Usain Bolt and have super speed - as soon as they get the ball youll never get the same reaction of speed. The opposite happens when accepting a through ball, the player tends to have to slow down for no reason
8) I cant see any idea of how much sprint reserve a player has so if Im pelting down the wing and they slow down its hard to maintain possession let alone carry on a move. Also the difference in speed between fast players and slow ones just isnt enough - Messi after the initial burst of speed can be covered by pretty much anyone
9) Tricking seems to be very much tacted on - the potential power of link feints and how slow they are to link just ruins the point of them. It is good though that you can change direction between certain links - could lead to some cool goals, but ultimately thats just down to a 2 button press - you can only cancel a link by losing the ball or passing it - I would have preferred multiple presses to indicate how far you want it to do the link...
10) The power bar is way too sensitive - if you dont tap it, it will go high and wide.
11) Why cant you control off the ball runs? The AI just isnt capable - time and again Ill watch Villa and Messi just stand there while my defender walks past them...

P.S I really miss FIFA celebrations

The few things I like:

1) Love when players attempt headers and miss them
2) Passing needs more accuracy though the power of the pass still feels disjointed (especially through balls)
3) I prefer how you do have some room to manoeuvre when you are on the ball - feels like real football - but offline FIFA feels like that, I suspect online it will be a totally different story too
4) As a default players will do drag backs animations and the like - its not a trick requirement like it is in FIFA, but seemingly a default attribute to certain players
5) Woot GKs dont run off the line so readily - also seem to parry the ball a lot more - animations are great for this

ps3ud0

I'm waiting for both demos before I 100% decide. That said I'll probably just end up getting FIFA first anyway due to club, I can't afford to get both on launch so one will precede the other.

I like the animations on this PES demo for tackling and the GK saves.

Dribbling is rough, slow, through balls are not very good. I know it's only a demo but it wasn't very smooth. Menu's are horrible, looks like a game menu from 10 years ago, it's 2010, get with it Konami.

Fifa 11 all the way. I went straight back to Fifa 10. I also miss celebrations and the art of creating a wonderful goal.

I've found the opposite, I'm normally useless at dribbling, but on this I'm penetrating defences pretty well. If you feel it's too slow, change the speed!
As for through balls, mine were rubbish to start off with, but with a bit of practice I'm getting better and better with them, they're about 90% manual, so if your's are pants, then it's 90% your fault!! :P

It's getting better and better the more I play it, I get the feeling that a play through of the tutorials on the full game will really make a difference too.

Has anyone watched the ball when you're dribbling? Please do, the ball jerks forward a tiny amount and then jumps forward slightly more but the ball is glued to the player, it doesn't naturally roll it's as if the ball is on a stick, I know FIFA has the problem where players are "stuck" to the ball, but with this it feels really weird, as if the ball when dribbling isn't moving naturally, it's really off putting in what is I think otherwise a good game.

Got this via PSN+ yesterday... I fired it up, honestly I know more about knitting than I do about football - but I had a blast with the demo...

Quite surprised the game had no in game commentary.. Normally sports games have running commentary, and when you watch a replay you get some smart remarks etc..

So, it was a bit dull because of this.. But I had fun playing a few matches, even though I had no idea what I was doing other then kicking the ball from one end of the pitch to the other in hope of getting some goals.. lol

Great graphics BTW.. Well impressed with the looks of it.

What was PES 10 like for online play? 09 was terrible and i can't remember what 10 was like. Apparently microsoft handle the servers now so they were meant to be good this year, can anyone confirm?

The full game will have commentary, Jim Beglin and Jon Champion, never even heard of Jon Champion and Jim Beglin is absolutely dire live, let alone with pre-recorded voices, if I do buy this I'll just turn the commentary off. That said FIFA isn't absolutely amazing commentary wise, lots of reused lines and you hear the same stuff match after match.

fifa and nhl used the same commentary for years and just added a couple of new lines to it each year kinda boring :(

I have to disagree with the NHL comment, I find the commentary in that to be excellent and the last few years have at least added enough different lines to make the game feel like there is a much larger selection of lines than there actually is. I mean, if I play against Chelsea in FIFA I hear the same one line about Stamford Bridge every single game, sometimes multiple times per game. If I choose Nashville Predators for example, in NHL then I will sometimes hear a line about Nashville, sometimes hear about the arena, sometimes hear something about the current line up and the previous years gone by, how they performed in the playoffs etc. I never seem to hear all those things in one game, whereas in FIFA you just hear the same lines over and over.

:)
