Good Old Games has shut down

See above.

What you quoted about licenses vs ownership is totally unrelated to any of what you have just written above though. I'm still confused as to what you think it means.

It's a clause to indicate that you only license use of software, you don't own it. This is the case with all software, as ownership remains with the publisher/developer.

Having legal ownership of the game/software would imply having rights to retail the game yourself etc. that's what that clause is related to, it has absolutely nothing to do with subscription services or anything like that.

I think before you criticise modes of business based on TOS, you should probably do more research into what those TOS actually mean, because at the moment I don't think you really understand them.

So you don't back up your steam folder? The point I'm making is Valve say it's a subscription service themselves, and I dislike that business model.

Well if you have a local copy (backup) you can technically still play them so I wouldn't class it as a subscription IMO. You could say the above to lots of things like EA servers if they went down no logging in for MP on BC2, NFS and many more titles. But I can't see you complaining about that, the fact is it's unlikely to happen and when it inevitably does people will have moved onto something else and not care.

It's called the future and if you dislike Steam's business model it's only going to get worse for you I'm afraid. :o

Well that and existing customers not being able to dl the games they have already paid for.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games.

Have i missed something?

Good for them. Updating the service with only a couple days downtime (its not like you need to be online to play the games anyway) so you cant buy anything until a little bit longer... boo hoo. no harm on the customer really and a nice bit of publicity.

It's more that they took the site down without a word me thinks. A few days downtime isn't so bad when you actually tell your customers what's going on and don't suddenly shut everything down without an explanation.

I really hope them getting Baldur's Gate is a sign of things to come. It would be amazing if they could gain access to more publishers back catalogues, EA's and SSI's for example.

The company is still there and you can re-download any games you purchased. What's your problem?
Is it really? I didn't know before. Good then, thanks!
Looks like it's time to load it back to my disks. I haven't really played it seriously because when I was trying to download the patch, the site was "forbidden" to reach. That was spring last year.

Now I have planes in the air, tanks on the ground and rule the world with Civ 4. Not to mention other adventure games. Won't feel too much time now.

They shouldn't need any downtime

No, but they probably did need the publicity :)

This. they need people to buy from them in order to keep the service going. If this publicity gets them noticed and keeps them going for longer then I fail to see what all the bitching about 2 days of 'inability to buy games but still fully free to redownload bought games and play what you already have'.

the downtime and countdown to the new unveiling also creates speculation and intrigue. If they had simply said 'hey guys weve made the service better and updated' most would have just shrugged and no new people would have heard about the site.

From how i read it people couldn't download their already owned games during that time, not just buy them.

But it sets a worrying precedent, what if later on they decide to shut the service off again for advertising or another purpose?

Im just going from their quote about "this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games". Would like to hear from anyone who tried to redownload something or looked further into it.

To be fair it was shut down for a decent reason. The day or so off did indeed raise its profile and they are bringing it all up to date, so its not like they just shut it down until enough people visited the site and then brought it back unchanged. Its nothing like if steam went down though as that has so many DRM implications and people wouldnt be able to play games they already have on their hdd. Its a buying service is all and 2 days off hardly garners the responses people are coming out with. Each to their own I guess, I saw it as a good stunt which came good in the end.

Well as the page they put up with the countdown on it had

First of all we would like to apologize everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by us closing down GOG.com without any warning and without giving access to your games

And

this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games

means that as soon as they can they'll find away to get you access to your games again i think they took peoples access away.

if my electricity provider cut my power off for 2 days as an advertising campaign I'd be cancelling my contract with them and never trust them again.
