Fatties

I have massive lovely big muscles so I'm not fat... Did I mention that I have big muscles? I'm only saying to remind you that BMI doesn't work for people with big muscles (LIKE ME)

BMI fails as a sole measure of obesity though.

I have a BMI of 31 but I can cycle 10miles each way to work every day no probs, run a 6 min mile stacked three times, have low blood pressure and resting heart beat pf 60bpm. In all other measurements, I'm very fit but according to my BMI I'm obese.

Only a very small proportion of the population are built like that though.

For 98% of the population, using high BMI as a risk factor to increased heart disease, type 2 diabetes and such is a useful tool.

BMI is massively flawed for judging individuals yes, however I'm sure the number of athletes with falsely high BMIs is at least cancelled out by the number of pure fatties with falsely low BMIs. Taking an average as the OP does it is a good indicator of a nations fatness.

I don't like the BMI system its not fair on a lot of people especially athletes / sportsmen
Those are the only people it's not fair on, and who really cares about fair with BMI? it's not like there's any hard and fast rules that you won't get something if you have a BMI over a certain level.

I'm not convinced about BMI as a judgement on whether you're fat or not.

I'm 5'10 and just over 14 stone which give me a BMI of around 28.5- classified as overweight and bordering Obese... I wear 34" jeans, have a single chin and have a fairly stocky build - but more muscle than wibbly!

I'm sure some of the ultrafit, bodybuilder types on here weigh a fair amount but might have no lardiness about them whatsoever.

*finishes off lard-filled-pie for 2nd breakfast*

BMI is a load of BS. It shouldn't be used for anything other than a rough rough guide. Though to be fair, my problem is how it's used, rather than the scale itself.

Like when a GP can't think of anything around BMI.

Im 6'3" and weigh just over 16 stone with a BMI of 30.1 or something like that.

Ive got a bit of excess baggae since passing my driving test, but even when i was playing rugby 3 times a week i was about 15 stone and was over weight BMI, but was in a 34" waist trouser and was hench :p

BMI is rubbish tbh!

6ft 4. 14 and a half stone. Skinny punk. Diet consists of pizza, coffee and cigarettes. Occasionally I break up the monotony with rollo cookies and a litre of cherry lucozade. I don't know where it goes. The first sign of a problem will probably be diabetes or a stroke.

It's things like this that confuse me. I'm also 6,4 and weigh 14 stone or slightly less but definitely am not skinny. Bit flabby instead actually. I'm fit enough and either go to the gym or play sport virtually every day. Not much point to this other than a moan about my weight meaning i ought to be thinner than i am!

BMI is just a rough estimate as it only takes into account the height and weight, so if you have a lot of muscles it adversely affects the BMI as muscles are heavier than fat.

Ideally you should also take the fat percentage of the body in consideration.

But for the people with a BMI of 30+ it's fairly accurate as they most likely suffer from fat and not muscles.

Fitness levels fail even more as a measure of obesity ;)

I'm 6ft, 12st 2 so in the 'normal' category, but did have about 5 fat years where I managed to just get into the obese category. Took a lot of hard work to get back to normal and feel so much better for it - wont be going back to being fat any time soon.

It's because we love our refined and processed foods here, especially carbs. Furthermore, people don't exercise and eat too much than their body metabolises. Pretty simple really. Doesn't surprise me at all those stats.

I don't get how the Italians stay so thin. A main part of their diet is pasta and pizza.

On my trips to Italy, it is a rare sight seeing an Italian chubber.

It's all freshly made & cooked and actually quite healthy. None of this dominos crap or stuff you throw in the oven.
