What would you do? work collegue related...He does naff all!

I have someone similar minus the slacking.

He's crap at his job, not allowed to go to any of our remote sites because the CEO of the entire company hates him and he dumps all his work on the rest of my team!

Management are aware of this but they won't get rid of him!

I feel your pain :(

Hmmm. I'm in two minds. Unless it impacts you directly, I don't see why you should care.

There's many reasons, mostly moral ones so I'm guessing you're morally dumb to ask that question?

Lack of morals actually makes you superior, however not understanding the concept of ethics or morals would make you dumb, but there is a very big difference

Regardless of how it impacts him it is annoying to a team of workers have a slacker get paid for no work,
That would be directly affecting you

its bad for business if he's not working like he should be,
That would be the managers problem, if the manager is unaware, thats his problem, the manager is therefore crap at his job.

its unfair he has a job he isn't willing to do when others who need jobs are on the dole,
Why should i care if it is unfair? A lot of things are unfair, if its directly affecting me or anyone i care about then i would do something, otherwise its a waste of time and effort

its stupid to allow someone to get away with it regardless, its not worth the company, team or anyone elses time to cover or let him get away with it
Thats the problem upper management needs to deal with, working as a team however will directly affect you, if his lack of work increases your own workload then action would be required otherwise...

when he's already been talked to with a disciplinary and still not working. In the end bad for business, team morale, customers on the other end (who they are supporting and have a job to support yet should ignore leaving someone in who is counter productive to this goal they are being paid for?)

Managers problem again, unless its a small company why should you care, if it is a small company then again its still not your problem unless you have power to sack the person, if you dont then....

and even the back log which effects the reputation of the company he works for which is obviously bad if people start badmouthing it and they get contracts taken away or whatever.

Again not your problem why care.

Keep in mind that my answers are based depending on my position within the company. If i am the manager people slacking and not doing work would not exist at all. But until i get promoted, the hell with it.

Given the fact that in our internet and network security company, there is 5 support guys, 3 of which are not directly taking calls and are 3rd line techs. The other two, myself a 2nd / 1st line engineer and the formentioned guy (1st line).

With the amount of calls that come in during the day, I quickly learnt within 2 weeks of starting this job nearly 2 years ago if you can be quick on the ball and keep up with tickets and any other project work going on, then fair enough, there is a little "slack" on internet browsing. I broswse the internet yes, but I also close down and do a hell of a lot more work.

However you have to draw a line when you have your ticket list filling up with tickets that need chasing, resolving with more calls coming in and someone just sitting there wasting too much time on the internet etc.

The person in question has his ticket list piling up with more calls coming in, and because of this, its not just making support in-effentiant, its effecting our customer service levels and SLAs

suggest implementing Office Communicator, whats what I did :)

Stelly

Was about to post the same

tbh.. it doesn't sound like you need to do anything - if he's had a disciplinary already then management are already aware, chances are he'll simply be told to GTFO when his probation finishes. Tis prob not worth their while sacking him prior to that - there is maybe a slim chance that they're hoping the warning might have worked and he'll change and they probably don't want to have much hassle wrt legal s tis likely easier to just wait till his 6 months are up and point out that x,,y and z targets haven't been reached and they're not keeping him on.

Just as an aside if there are two people taking calls then you're both in effect the 1st line team surely? The other three are '2nd line' - or do they just ignore the lack of a 2nd line team and call the other guys '3rd line' for political reasons.

With a team that small tbh.. all 5 of you ought to be taking calls with the new guy being able to pass on harder issues to the experienced guys and maybe a 'team leader' selected from one of the experienced guys to manage/reassign issues within the team. Forget the 1st line/2nd line/3rd line nonsense for 5 people and just be a generic support team. This would probably have a more desirable effect on your backlog/SLAs too as the new guy will be 1 slacker out of 5 rather than 1 slacker out of 2 leaving just you alone to work harder on front line issues.

He sounds exactly like me in my previous job...although i was the King of the support team..and would always help out other people and clean up their mess...

To be honest though I was just totally bored out of my mind answering the same tickets, and taking calls from rude and stupid people, so spent a lot of my time on msn/ocuk/skype etc. Difference I guess is i was still answering A LOT of tickets and doing a lot of work. I quit in the end cos I was so bored. Not too long after I left they called me back asking if I wanted to come back....

That statement pretty much sums up not only co-working relationships, but middle and upper management too. Modern middle-class work ethic is centrered around being the person who gets paid the most to do the least. Look at most of your managers and their managers for proof of this concept. Heck, look at the people on the same floor as you that get paid more than you but do the same job... would you say they do more work than you? Probably not.

Not particularly - or at least not where I work.

The product manager I work under is in for the same number of hours as I am and does project work, (some)development and a fair bit of analysis in addition to managing two modules/development teams.

The head of R&D was still at his desk when I left today and still gets his hands dirty in addition to his management work.

It isn't uncommon for a senior manager/ or even director to go and assist the support guys either if something is urgent and perhaps involves something they previously developed or helped to implement on a client site.

As mentioned, I am a 1st line/2nd line Network and VoIP support engineer as i take on stuff the 1st line engineer cant deal with so its handed to me, when it comes to VoIP pretty much all of it comes to me given that I was hired for my experience in the platform we use.

The reason behind the other support guys being tied up is because we have just purchased a building and we are turning it in to a fully fledged datacentre instead of co-locating it so support is quite busy with prepping for this atm.
