New fibre exchange list, now including FTTP!

My exchange isn't on the list, although the samknows website lists the FTTC status as: RFS date set : 01/12/2010

Should be a huge improvement for DSL in my area, samknows lists me as 3.6km for the exchange serving 32,000 ppl, and that I 'might' get 1Mb/s currently. Luckily I have cable though.

If BT can get this rolled out in my area and get me a service that can compete with 50Mb from VM, then I might considering changing. But if FTTC can't do close to 50Mb then as far as i'm concerned its outdated and not worth it.

Lucky Bugger :(
I am only about 8 miles away on the llanwern exchange, stone age speeds of up to 2 meg...if I am lucky
Off topic--I went to secondary school there in the 70`s lol :D

Caldicot comprehensive? same as me :)

Yeh Llanwern is only up the road from me.lol

Just had an email from my Dad about BT Infinity and I had another check for FTTC. BT site says it should be done by the 31st Dec, whereas on the exchange map it says march, I hope they have just brought it forward!

Relay don't get BT sometimes. I live in Keighley west Yorkshire, Shipley to the east has had FTTP for about a year now. Our exchange of similar size and load there's still no date, YET two puny village ones just ones just south of me (about 3 miles away) are getting the upgrade next year. There seems there method of upgrading is blind folded dart throwing at a map.

Then pause for a second to consider the massive logistical headache that this is to plan. It'll often come down to things like duct capacity for laying fibre to the cabinets, some places will have decent ducting laid reasonably recently (20-30 years) and can have fibre installed cheaply and quickly. Other places will involve far more work and expense, assuming anything as basic as 'the exchanges are roughly the same size' means much is wildly simplistic - BT have enough infrastructure that this is a nightmare to plan and BT's planners are rubbish anyway. But for what it is, I've no problem with BT picking the low hanging fruit first in this case...

Why do we only have one company, BT, investing in fiber in the country while some other countries have several ?

It can't be that there is no market in the uk for Fiber, that must be another reason. Does anyone know why we don't have 100mbit fiber already ? Why are we dependent on BT ?

Don't forget cable. Virgin Media and the cable companies before them have already had fibre in the ground for a long time.

Well, that's a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping that BT Infinity would give me another option for decent high speed broadband apart from Virgin. The availability checker is giving 31/3/11 as the availability date, but max download speed is <20Mb (less than my current Virgin 20Mb package):

BT Infinity
19.1Mb download
8.3Mb upload

That upload speed would be nice, but as pointed out by rexehuk above, Virgin are also increasing their upload speeds. Guess I may just have to bite the bullet and upgrade to Virgin XXL broadband (50Mb down / 5Mb up after the upstream improvement).

Yes that is true, but why is it then that virgin feels the need to offer its customers adsl speeds on fiber cable ?

Meanwhile other countries have FIOS, reasonably priced 20/10 and 50/10 etc for almost a decade...

There has to be something else at play that has prevented the likes of verizon from coming in to the country and wiring it all up.

* The lowest bandwidth tier was originally 5 Mbit/s down and 2 Mbit/s up and is now 15 Mbit/s down and 5 Mbit/s up in most areas. (bundled with FiOS TV Prime HD)
* A second tier is available with 25 Mbit/s download speed and 25 Mbit/s upload speed. (bundled with FiOS TV Extreme HD)
* A third (or higher) service tier, when available for residential service, provides higher still bandwidth, in some areas reaching 30/15, 35/35 or 50/20 Mbit/s download and upload. (bundled with FiOS TV Ultimate HD)

Can't wait for BT fiber optics speeds syncing at the same as my ADSL2 10mbit/1mb, thanks BT

You will probably sync at 40Mb/s. The estimate is very conservative.

Knowing BT and the OAP population of Eastbourne they will start this when the world ends in 2012 :P

Well, as far as I know no ADSL company can offer the speeds cable can, such as 50Mb right now, and 100Mb to be rolled out next year.

Also, Verizon is no longer deploying its FIOS service, which just goes to show that fibre right to the home isn't needed yet and simply doesn't justify the costs.

And as for the price, yes the UK is not as advanced as some other countries but our average broadband speed is still much higher than others, even the US which still has a huge dialup population. It is also hard to compare prices between countries when the cost of doing buisness differs.

why do they limit uploads, surely their network equipment is the same as every other on the planet that is full duplex ?

of course it is a restriction, why though? why the need to restrict upload so heavily, here is virgin offering 1gbit full duplex to business, but can't seem to offer a decent upload to its residential customers... and what about the ridiculous use limits, we all know that there is no limit on data transfers within a network. the whole cap per g/b is a total scam. Just like charging per minute on the mobile network is a total scam.

Cause they're tight *****s? :p

If you compare the D/U ratio to europe, we are being conned big time for our internet... you got places like sweden on 100Mbit 1:1 pretty much for 50 euro a month. If virgin do upgrade the downstream after a few months I hope they push a few more Mbit on the upstream.

I can't complain with virgin though, I've rode the upgrade wave since the blueyonder era, 2MB to 4MB etc etc all the way up to 20Mbit today (with a small upgrade obv).

BT should do their fiber to cabinet and then offer households the ability to pay a large setup to run fiber from the cabinet to their property. But it wouldn't make any difference there is obviously a larger reason behind restricting upload that goes further than any excuses they can come up with on an equipment or usage level.

Fiber cable is relatively cheap. Depending on distance you could pay for a cable and labour from the end of your street for relativity cheap.

EDINBURGH WAVERLEY FTTC/P Dec 2011

YES LAD!

having said that im on virgin 50mb atm... but i spose eventually other companies will get their mits on the fiber :D

Yeah, i would prefer some isp's to offer their services over bt fiber when it arrives, though i suspect there might be a period where its not possible, hopefully its not years.

Bullox. Closest place for me is Headless Cross and Cheltenham :(

Kind of strange considering how wealthy Malvern is getting all of the old retired rich people here :o.

Guess I'm stuck with 3.5mb/s ADSL.
