There are lots of things I could do with £30 extra a year - eat more pizza for example - but that doesnt mean its worth selling my posessions to gain £30.

There are lots of things I could do with £30 extra a year - eat more pizza for example - but that doesnt mean its worth selling my posessions to gain £30.
There are also far easier and less degrading ways of earning a paltry £500.
I'd rather not have the reminder of the fact that I was desperate for £500 every time I get in my (crap) car.

This is your downfall. The most common comparison site lists my cheapest quote at nearly £800, whereas an independent quote direct from an insurer leaves me closer to £550.
Instead you would rather lose out in some other way? this downgrade of the car could be one of many things the OP is doing to save money, he has clearly said he needs to get himself sorted over the next few years.
Also, i dont see what is degrading about driving around in a lesser car. Nice bit of snobbery there lol

Compared to what you are used to, by definition, it is degrading.
This might not just be a single thing though. The op could have done lots elsewhere to save / make money already.
If you were in the same position, would you really not sacrifice that small luxury considering the small amount of time in the car?

clio sports are cheap to run, I can however see the arguement on this...
It all comes down to the priorities of the OP, after smashing up my s2k I decided I would get a clio sport instead of another S in order for me to afford a deposit on a house.
If I didnt want my own place I would most probably be driving around in an s2000 now instead of a slightly dog eared clio 172... which makes me sad for a little while until I realise there are more important things in life than cars

It was a 'total cost' of owning and running the car for a year, not just the running costs.
Plus it was more of a rough guess/estimate to make a point with the figures.

If you have a Clio 172 I'd say he is far more likely to change things/mod than if he had a 1.0 Seat. The value of modding over the year could be £0 or it could be £100 more than if he owned the Seat. Simply something to consider.
He is trying to save money, why would he be modding?
If anything he is more likely to mod the crap car he gets as it will be missing things that he used to like.
Theres no point selling a £3k car for another £3k car if you're that desperate to save £500 a year. If you're going to do it, do it properly and go for something proper bangernomics, like a £300 Mondeo complete with taped up bumper. At least then you'll have released a lot of cash, and stopped losing the depreciation on your current car, which is probably more than the other running costs anyway.
Then that's an added cost to the Seat. It's something that needs to be considered.
How many times have people downgraded cars here then spent money on wheels or a remap or whatever.
Say some super amazing Clio 182 alloys come up for sale, or a brand new exhaust for £80. Chances are he'll buy it as too good to say no, that comes under modding.
Why is he likely to buy things when he is stating for the next 2 years he needs to sort himself out? He is trying to make a positive step financially. Keeping his car and spending more on alloys, tyres and insurance is not a step in the same direction.
