OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB on Today Only £158.61

Cheers buddy, just cancelled another order for this and nabbed it for £160. Bargain!

Awesome, was looking for a Vertex 2E in 2.5" format last night. The 90GB ones were almost this much!

Thought I was going to miss out after my card provider's verified by visa type scheme kept timing out while the available stock dropped from 11 to 4. After the shop said they couldn't help I ended up going to pay via paypal and using an Amex card.

I wonder if the Vertex 2 lines are being phased out as many etailers seem to have them on backorder or special offer.

/edit - back to £200 now. Feel like I've got a real bargain :)

I just ordered a Vertex 2E 60GB yesterday. I would maybe have been tempted by that offer if it was on yesterday. I only needed an extra 60GB or so though and only paid about £87 including next day delivery (if it comes today that is) so it's not too bad. :)

I picked one up too :) been waiting for a nice price for one of the larger drives, still expensive but this should stop me buying storage for alteast ..3 months

That is literally what happened to me. Tried 3 times to go through the card payment system and when it went down to 4 I bit the bullet and went paypal. That wasnt keen when I tried to get it to deliver to an unconfirmed address so I just managed to do it once more and bag one with 2 left.

Very tempted, but held off.

SSD is a luxury I can live without until the next-gen in Q1, when capacities will be larger. I'm also way too lazy to do a fresh installation right now!!

It's not just a 'luxury', the difference is truly staggering. Almost a necesity!

It will make it even more special then for me when Intel bring out the next generation SSD's with greater capacity and extended longevity :)
Or you could wait a further 18 months for Gen4, or 3 years for Gen5 etc......

Come to think of it, I wish I did not purchase my first (20MB) hard disk back in 1990. I should have waited for SSD technology instead. I would have saved so much money, gained so much capacity, and increased performance as well:).

Almost, but not quite yet. I reckon we need higher capacity/£ before these are must have. The next gen might be it. I think I'll wait and see what the new year brings before I decide :)

Anyhows, it depends what you do. It won't increase my fps, and 120gb doesn't go far these days when I'm playing a load of games. My steam folder alone is > 300GB :(

I do not think that capacities will increase much in the next 12 months. What is more likely is that Intel (and others) will increase performance, and actually charge similar ammounts for same capacity, but faster drives.

In order to make ssd's quicker, faster memory and faster controllers are needed. These generally cost more to produce, so to prohibit cost the capacities will be kept down. Also, existing drives already flood SATA2 bandwidth, so SATA3 will be defacto. Many current mobos have very few or no SATA3 ports, and many existing SATA3 controllers are very poor. Many people will need a new mobo to take advantage of next years performance.

So, next year faster drives will arrive and SSD manufacturers may do away with tiny 30-40GB capacities, but 80-160GB SSD's will still be the norm. 80-160GB is more than sufficent for an OS drive. It will be 5-10 years before high capacity >1TB SSD's are affordable for the masses.

In my opinion, buy the best you can afford now. Live for today.

I might just do that unless the next generation offers double the capacity for less cost, with increased longevity. Then again even if that does happen it would not be that high on my "next thing to buy list" :)

According to...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3965/intels-3rd-generation-x25m-ssd-specs-revealed

The third generation drives will be available somewhere in the Q4 2010 - Q1 2011 timeframe in capacities ranging from 40GB (X25-V) all the way up to 600GB.
The new drive uses 25nm IMFT Flash, which means we should get roughly twice the capacity at the same price.
Intel hasn’t disclosed any information about spare area, but given the huge increase in longevity of the drives I suspect that spare area has gone up as well (at least on the larger drives).
so it is a step in the right direction. But we will see a lot can happen between now and the actual mass release.

I have to say... I was so very impressed by my X25-M, but I opted for the 80GB one because of the price (£200 at the time). I recently ran out of space and just needed a bit of extra storage capacity. I think in true tribute to the excellence of SSDs I opted for a second SSD of a mere 60GB rather than a standard HDD of a much larger capacity. Obviously the price difference is significant but the speed, reliability and lack of noise from the SSD (and moreover my experiences) meant that I didn't hesitate when purchasing my second one. I have had so many mechanical hard drives fail on me that it's not funny - for me the SSDs are easily worth the premium and at the moment you can get a very nippy 60GB Vertex 2E for around £100. People wouldn't hesitate to spend at least triple that on a decent GPU and as many people will tell you upgrading to an SSD is worth every penny.

Haha - post of the day :D

Like 555 said, we could all sit around forever waiting for better deals, capacity and performance etc etc.

There comes a point where you might actually need to buy something

Damn, I cant believe I missed this deal!

Please do it again OCUK! :)
Tonight only you can get a Patriot inferno 120GB for £152.74 inc vat.
Tomorrow, when it arrives in stock the price will revert to £180

See the bottom of Gibbo's post

They look to be very similar to the OCZ drives. Same Controller, memory, and pretty similar performance.
