How long do you keep your car?

Current car - MR2 (Mark 2) - Owned for 18 months, intending to sell it in the next couple of weeks. I'm getting rid of it because I'm fed up of it really, all my driving is commuting or in the city.

Previous car - Astra (Mark 4) - Also owned for about 18 months, I got rid of it because I wanted something faster and more fun. I was at uni at the time and didn't need a car as I got the bus in most days. I know it has a bad reputation around here but honestly I couldn't fault the car.

The car I've owned the longest was my first car, a Punto. The main reason for that was insurance, after my second year of driving I could afford insurance for something bigger (ie the Astra)

MINI Cooper S 54' - Had it since Feb 09' not planning to get rid yet :)

Ford Focus 07' Zetec Climate - about 6 months, I missed my MINI too much.

List of cars since 2006:

95' Fiat Cinquecento
01' Daewoo Lanos Saloon
05' R50 MINI ONE
07' Ford Focus Zetec
56' R56 MINI Cooper
54' R53 Mini Cooper S

I had the Leon for bang on two years.
Ended up selling because:
- I wanted a change
- I over-reacted to being caught speeding
- it was starting to rust due to a shoddy respray
- and I had spent thousands fixing things

That, and I (probably incorrectly) thought the turbo was on its way out.

I've had the Lolvo for 10 weeks and put a deposit down on something new after only 7 weeks :o
No idea how long it'll stay, it depends on my living situation and whether I cba to fix the funny noises, just took it 'round the block and it doesn't sound particularly healthy..

I've had the Z3 just over a week, and I suspect it'll stay for a good few years.

Current car I intend to keep for 2 years, had it a few months now.

Previous car, and the 1st I've owned I kept for about 2 years before it exploded.

Had the current car since June, will possibly change it next year towards the end, but will all depend on money/job situation really.

Had the Clio for over 5 years, and the 19 about four years before that.

Current, e46 323ci. Had it a month.

First car, rover 220 2l diesel. Around 2 years.

Previous car, mg zs 120+. Around 4 years.

Parents have had a rover 75 for about 8 or 9 years now.

Had my first car (Cinquecento) about 18 months, Megane a couple of years, Accord for 3 years, had the MX-5 over two years now, and I intend to keep the Mondeo for a while. I believe choosing the right car and sticking with it for a while is better than farting around changing cars. Although part of me wouldn't mind to just have a pot of money set aside to buy random interesting vehicles and sell them on after a while, like Lashout does

Had it 5 years. Whilst a student I just don't care.
When I graduate I will get something significantly newer with more power and I will probably keep that for a few years.

imo it is complete madness to be changing a car anything less frequently than annually.

Usually 6 months ish. Buy with full MOT, tax, just serviced, recent tyres, low mileage etc. Put 10k miles on, replace not much and sell on for same price I bought it for. Cheap motoring!

Had the Mini about 9 months now I think, got no plans to sell it for quite a while yet as it fits my needs perfectly. I can't really think of anything else I'd want to replace it with to be honest.

My longest ownership was my Renault 5 GT Turbo which I had for 7 years. My shortest ownership was probably my Mondeo which lasted a few months as I hated it, bored me to death.

Current MG MGF - Owned for just over 7 years and is still the car I have owned for the shortest amount of time although I have no real plans on selling it.

Previous - Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.2 - Owned for 10 years, although the last year was SORN until scrapped.

Total of two cars owned in 17 years of driving.

Old: Rover 220 Gsi Turbo 5.5 years. Owned through Uni and tweaked it to about 280hp in the end.

Current : Honda S2000 4.5years now, no intention to sell as its 11yrs old and done 131k now. It's been and will remain reliable and cheap enough to run whilst still feeling a bit 'special' to drive on my 6 mile commute.

Current: Megane RS 250, just over 2 months, plan to keep for at least 8-10 years

Longest: Megane Coupé 16v, 14 years

Shortest: F-Reg Escort 1.6 auto, 6 months

Worst Decision: F-Reg Escort 1.6 auto, 6 months

Had current car (2000W Skoda Fabia 1.4 8v Comfort) for 7 years. I was convinced it would be written off (Old lady getting pedals mixed up on an automatic Astra when parking) a few weeks ago and finding it would be repaired was something of a surprise. The quote from the garage to the insurance company was £1200, which can't be far off what the car's worth.

Really pleased to have it back now and actually hope I'll be hanging on to it for a while.

Previous car was a 1.0L Nissan Micra DX. Had it 6 months then wrote it off pulling out from a junction when I thought I could see through misted windows (had actually wondered whether I should stop and clear them seconds before). Turns out I couldn't see well enough to spot a red Astra...

Before that I had a Mini 1275GT for a few years. It used to leak coolant though and eventually overheated badly. Got a few hundred for it, even with a wreaked engine.

Thinks back:

Shortest: Rover 213SE (many years ago) - 4 days - bought cheap at a car auction and traded it in for a profit on another car.

Longest: MK1 MR2 - owned for three and a half years.

Worst Decision
: Selling the above MR2

Current: Seat Arosa: Purchased due to financial reasons, owned for a year and a half and planning on selling it March / April next year. Looking at Gen7 Celica's and Mazda 6's for the replacement just now.
