Old skool RPGs - Really that good or just nostalgia?

Anyway, for me the last great RPG was Morrowind. Nothing since that really has really hit if off with me. I like Mass Effect and the Witcher but theres just something missing about them, can't get into them. I think its to do with atmosphere as the people above said.
I'd agree with that 100%, definitely something missing from modern RPGs compared to the classics. Deus Ex is my 'best' PC game ever, although i think it has to be Hired Guns on my old Amiga 500 which claims to be my favourite overall.

I think a decent music score & sound FX helps enormously, i can still remember lots of old game music but recent titles?. Meh.

If you are looking for a strong story, the reason I play Lord of the Rings Online is precisely that. (I know its an MMORPG, not a single player RPG, but still, close enough)

It inherits a brilliant story and depth from the books, and unlike other MMOs I have played where quests tend to be somewhat shallow, LOTRO adds an 'epic' quest line delivered in Volumes/Books/Chapters, where each quest is a chapter and they are very story driven, linking up with the events of the books/movies quite cleverly.

You can rush through the game just doing the objectives mechanically (kill 5 of this, talk to X, find Y place, etc) but if you take your time to read the dialogue and enjoy the landscapes and the fluff in the game, I think a great.

And dont listen to the doom and gloom about delayed updates. If you have never played the game there's months and months of content to go through before you are waiting for an update anyway.

I've tried to install the widescreen mod but it just corrupts my game files and I just crash out of the game and get a "can't find file xxx error". I've reinstalled a few times and it does it everytime, so I gave up.

Bud, Does it not have a good res already that would suit you? Have you checked the options? Does the game not display full screen on you VDU?

The widescreen mod allows you to play at pretty much any res you like up to 1280 x 800. Without the mod you can only play the game at one res(800x600 i think).

No, you can play upto 1280x800 WITHOUT a mod.

I have the collection edition, but that is an official edition I don't use any dodgy mods.

Checkout the options.

(you might need to check a box, for it to display the additional options, but it will test your hardware to make sure it will run stabiliy)

For the Quest for Glory games is just .... I have no words. Even to this day I still play them and they're untouched. Keep your fancy graphic engines, celebrity voices and space-age technology. Give me a game that touches the heart strings with a superior story, fun gameplay and characters I care about. It's not just nostalgia, it actually IS better. The setting in QFG: Shadows of Darkness, along with the music actually moved me to tears when I first played it. Erana's Peace. It's pure brilliance.

I would like to mention Gabrial Knight: Sins of the Father, it's available on GoG for $5.99 and is the best adventure game I've ever played, unlike the Monkey Island games(which I love) this is very adult with good humour and great plot.

Can't recommend it highly enough.

Gabrial Knight 2 I enjoyed too, very much so at the time in fact, Gabriel Knight 3, well I completed it but it is no where near as good as either of the first 2.

As far as I remember Baldur's Gate resolution is fixed at 800x600. I think the only way you would be able to change the resolution of BG is if you were running something like BGTutu to play BG in BG2 engine.

Where did you get the mods from? First you want to install the Widescreen mod from here;
This page also includes the ReadMe, might be worth reading through that before installing
Direct link to download mod

Once that has installed correctly then install the GUI mod from here
Direct link to download mod

What version of the game are you running? I have successfully installed the mods on both disc and GoG versions of the game.

i just want more diablo type rpgs, simple isometric layout, buy equipment in town, go out and fight to find better items and gold, have enough quests to keep me going but not too many, and by quests i don't want too many 'go here kill 10 monsters, come back, kill 10 more...' and EXP should come from hunting not just cashing a quest at the end, waypoints and town portals are good to reduce excessive walking from place to place. I also like having mixed monsters in each area, not this popular 'sectioned layout' where your only fighting one type at a time! so thats it really simple but effective gameplay :D

I have the GoG version of the game.

I downloaded the widescreen mod from the link in your post. The only download link that worked on that page was the one labelled "Gibberlings Three", its the 3rd link down under the Windows section. The America and Canada links don't work.

I didn't bother installing the GUI mod as I thought it just did the same thing as the widescreen mod. Do I need both of them to get it to work then?

No you can just use the Widescreen mod, but the GUI is a little messed up. It works fine and looks OK, it just doesnt scale to widescreen, the GUI mod fixes that.

If you run the Widescreen mod on it's own you can scale to pretty high res if you want, but some things in the game become pretty damn small, I didn't think it was a good idea to be playing at 1920x1200 when I tried it. You are only limited to 1280*800 if you run the GUI mod, as it wont work at a higher res.

Do you see any errors when the widescreen mod from Gibberlings Three is applied?

The version of BG 2 that I have is not modded and has an option to change resolution much higher than 800x600.

Planetscape: Torment however is fixed to 800x600.

EDIT: Actually you can play it at 2048 x 1536, they say it isn't fully supported, but the program runs a test that makes sure it will be stable.

btw I play it on a widescreen TV and it looks good enough for me on 800x600, so will look mint at a higher res.

To the guy who is having trouble - have you tried looking at the options?

My advice. Forget all the mods, reinstall, patch it upto date, then you should have the option to play upto 2048 x 1536, also you can play it at a more reasonable res of 1600 x 1200.

Hope this helps you bud :)

Good was pick up and play. With the old 2d/isometrics i had no problem doing that, now though with the rpgs of the day being mainly story/cutscenes, emotionaly connection lead, they tend to favour extended playing time to get in to.

No problem doing that if you have the time, enjoyed dragon age last year when i was off at christmas.. as soon as my time became limited to an hour or less at a time, i lost more connection to it everytime i loaded it up.

With the oldschool, find that, go kill that, never had that problem.

He's playing Baldur's Gate as far as I understood it, not BG2? Did I totally miss that?

/goes to read thread again.

Edit

The reason I went straight to BGII is that I was told the second game was so much better than the first.

In light of this I decided last night to purchase the first game on GOG and I will start playing it tonight and over the weekend.

I read this as spengos was playing Baldur's Gate 1, which is locked at 800x600

Although the Widescreen mod should work for BG 2 as well, but not tried it myself. I think the default resolutions are 4:3 only, which is fine and all, play plenty games like that, but I always prefer to get them in a native widescreen res if I can.

Currently playing through Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscurum and keep getting whipped in the first section, there are no onscreen hints and tips as to what I should be doing and apparently I should read through this thing called a game manual before starting the game. What's all that about!

:p

I can't remember the last time I had to read a manual before playing a game, it was definitely years ago though.

+1 (except the crying bit :p). Hero's quest and QFG IV are exceptionally good. Unlike most other point & click adventure games at the time (Sierra, Lucasarts) it had proper RPG elements. You create your protagonist (fighter/thief/mage) and gain experience as you go.

Heh I remember spending good hours on that, getting my character 'gimped' so that when all the shrines were visited, the stat boost would level my combat and diplomacy skills to max without wasting anything :D

Yes! Ive got so used to not reading manuals that i didnt for this either. Read it now and am having a blast.
You do get on screen info if you hang your mouse over things.

I have a great hint to start the game out; use one skill point in pickpocket and rob the first black smith you meet, then go smash his barrel (please no smashing jokes:rolleyes:)... ill let you figure out the rest.
