Tesco Self Service Till and Using Own Bags

I've had the same problems and complained to my girlfriend about the exact same thing on several occasions. I believe it's to do with putting more/less weight on the big area that it's not expecting (even something as 'light' as a bag for life will start it complaining). I find it a pain also, and resort to leaving all our bagging until the end to stop it bleating.

I don't use them out of principle. We are paying for the staff to perform their jobs for us, not paying for us to perform the staff's job for them.

I never use them, keep people employed,i,m sure supermarkets would love to get rid of the till staff, and boost the shareholders profits even more, sod ,em,its the thin end of the wedge.

Or reduce prices more than they already do. Self service is far quicker. Why cut of your nose to spite your face. Your welcome to the manned tills. Only use them for big shops or alcohol.

I find the ASDA ones more annoying as the seem more sensitive for some reason.

Never had any problems with them though. Especially not that time when I got Red Dead Redemption for £9.99 :D

I like to have a bit of chat (makes me sound so lonely) to the till workers so I pretty much always use the proper tills, it's usually faster too.
Will use them if I'm just getting a sandwich or something though, would never dream of using them if I had more than say 10 items in my basket.
Do agree 100% that they are far too low.

There all made by the same company (ncr) . its best to bag up using plastic and then put in yer bag for life .. silly i know but the scales dont expect to see the extra weight of the bag . if there well setup and calibrated there not to bad but can be a right mare at times

always use them when i can, never have any problems at all. Incredible to see so many people demanding that they get seen to by a person when most people on the checkout are useless.

There not designed for larger shops, go to a till. Problem solved.

I agree, except the other night went and did a weeks shop round about 1am at local tescos. All the manned tills shut, and about 12 people trying to scan their weeks shopping into 4 self service bits. No room, bags everywhere.

I just left my shopping and walked out in disgust.

NO manned tills? That's shocking. While I prefer self service, I hope the option of speaking to a human being won't be eliminated.

I find that shops have got really bad at organising till cover at the less conventional times. The Asda I go to tries to close the self service tills at around 11pm, at which point the few manned tills get swamped with customers - a mixture of weekly shops and those with just a few items. And no employees seem to have the authority or inclination to sort it. Surely they can just pull one of the many shelf stackers onto the self service area allowing at least 4 more tills open?

And trolleys in self service = bad :D

Shops don't like leaving money in these things overnight so they've probably removed the cash from them and took it to the cash office or whatever so they won't be bringing it back out at that time of night. Saying that, they could still leave them for card sales only. Meh, i hate the things anyway, always used a manned checkout which are quicker 99% of the time from my experience

We've already had threads on self service checkouts before.

Morrisons one's are terrible, as generally agreed before.
M&S machines are pretty good though, but then I think they've probably spent more money on them, as you don't get the same kind of bagging issues, especially when using your own bag.

I find Tesco systems to be the worst, always prompting the "Unexpected item in baggage area" message.

this is usually down to your own fault

Either leaning on the scales accidentally, not arranging the items properly so that they stay still when packed etc..

Every time i've had an "unexpected item" warning, its down to something i've done and been sorted without an assistant.
