NAS - HDD Failure

I have had a Lacie Internet Disk for about 2 years now and i think the inevitable has just happened!

The drive stopped being available on the network so thought it was just having another of its moments! Looking closer i found that the drive wasnt spinning up. Ive since taken the HDD out (a Seagate Barracude 7200.11 1TB) and plugged it into my desktop, the drive starts to spin up, makes some clicking noises then the spinning slows, rinse and repeat! The drive isnt visable in Windows, either through Computer or Disk management.

Ive lost a lot of things, including my dissertation, a copy of Windows 7 (student download). I take it there is no hope?!

Thanks

Rob

Is it running SD15 firmware? Will say on the sticker ontop.

If its clicking its generally going to be a mechanical fault though.

damn, hard luck. :(

I know what it's like to lose data, when storing RAID is a life saver.

Sounds like it's given up the ghost.

RAID can go bad too. Keep a local copy, RAID1 copy on NAS and a copy in the cloud on something like Wuala.

Well this has been quite frustrating (as you can imagine!). Ive opted to get a Netgear RND2110 Duo thing. Looks like the resilience of XRAID will put me in a better position. I think i will get another USB drive to back this up to every so often.

On the whole, will the longevity of 2 drives in XRAID be better, i like the ability to replace the failed drive if one does pop its clogs again.

Assuming that "XRAID" is just a mirror, yes it'll help significantly. You're unlikely to have both drives fail at the same time (It'll take you a couple of days to replace a broken drive and rebuild the mirror). You are still vulnerable to power surges and fires etc taking out the whole device so It is technically better to have two single drive NAS's, and backup to both of them regularly. then you can keep one of them unplugged and in a different location.

Raid is not a backup.

With 2tb drives USB at 70 quid or there abouts there really is no excuse for an offline backup these days. Hopefully you can get your data back and let it be a lesson learned.
