found an email at work being nasty about me.

Maybe you came across as a charmless idiot in the e-mail, perhaps seemed like you were shirking responsibility? Either way its not the way things should be done.
I wouldn't recommend an official route of complaint, just speak to him in person

that's not the op.

I wish I had that sense of thinking. I just can't do it though, I care about what others think of me! And I hate giving people a reason to dislike me, or just generally not getting on with someone.

And reporting somebody to HR is going to help the OP become popular err.. how exactly?

Worry about popularity, or potential bullying at work? Hmmm...

"There goes 'Old Crashy' again" :D

:o:p

Its easy for me, I don't spend my working time with anybody in particular, I have a very solitary job.

So its very easy to not give a monkeys.

That said though, I never take work home - on a personal level - I don't socialise with my work mates be them the ones I like or not.

Were it not for the fact I need the wage, I would not be there or know them.

So, theres two aspects of me not being bothered about what they think. Bottom line for me is I know I do my job to the best of my ability, I'm not perfect, who is?

But, if anybody did dislike me, would I let it get to me? I don't think so. Bigger fish & all that I guess in my case?

Anyway, nothing more annoying to an antagonistic type than to be ignored imo..... ;)

My 2p anyway!

I would file a grievance and raise a security issue about him not logging off his workstation - depends on local requirements.

Why dont you just drop in the odd "you know me im a charmless idiot", he will get paranoid thinking you and the boss are taking the pee out of him and you can pee yourself with laughter at that pathetic *****.
This.

Get a grip.

Nobody has harrased you. Nobody has walked up to you and called you lazy.

Two people had a private conversation, perhaps foolishy, and you read it.

What are you going to do next, advocate thought police incase somebody dares mutter to a mate in the corridor 'Damn that Colbaker, he's a bit of a...'?

I would be far more bothered about wondering what I'd done to make them think that and trying to put it right than seeing which bit of the company policy I could get them into trouble over

Except that he is more than vindicated in wanting to take this further, two people conducting a defamatory (mildly so) conversation about him, it doesn't involve him but the person responsible for the email being able to be read is likely breaching more than just a few Company guidelines from the fact he left his workstation unlockerd.

How was the Op to know that it wasn;t intended for him to read the email until after reading skimming it, after all if you walked into work, attempted to sign into a pc and saw your name highlighted would you not perhaps think that perhaps there might be something needing your attention?

I get called far worse than that in emails on a daily basis. Some of them are even sent actually to me.

I couldn't care less. I view work only as a device for earning money (and from getting away from nattering wife). I don't engage in it personally.
