Am I?

If you look at what was perfectly acceptable just a few years ago (and seen as some of the greatest comedy of all time), compared to what is acceptable now, the change is remarkable. Do you find the below offensive? If so, you're too sensitive.

Yes you are...stop worrying about it.

How do you think i feel when my religion/faith is attacked constantly on here??..im talking about islam here....i dont let it affect me or bother me..whats the point of worrying or getting all sensitive about it??...some people will never change their opinion or viewpoints and ive found out that trying to change their views/opinions is a fustrating task in itself and id probably find more joy in banging my head against a brick wall:p.

[serious mode] I think you're confusing the issues here. When we discuss religion on these boards, generally people are serious about them, so you're right in saying that trying to change people's views is nigh on impossible. However, when people are racist on these boards, I imagine that 90% aren't actually racist anyway, and that they're only doing it for a laugh - there's no need to change their views. If people on here were genuinely racist, then there would be a problem. The reason that people are ripping it out of the OP is that she doesn't seem to have grasped the fact that people who make racist jokes are often not actually racist. [/serious mode].

So making racist jokes is okay if you're not actually racist ?

This thread got big fast....

Just my 2p, although I do not personally refer to a chinese take-away as a 'chinkie', it dosn't sound particularly racist to me. If you are honestly offended by this, I suggest you may need to lighten up a little.

This is the biggest problem with anything like this... Rather than "sorry if I offended you" it's become "you shouldn't be offended - suck it up".

Just because someone doesn't think something is offensive, it doesn't mean it isn't to someone else. Freedom of speech 'demands' that we can say whatever we like, and people need to just 'live with it' if they're offended.

Of course, if they should say something that genuinely offends us, we have every right to retaliate...

The old adage "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" is lost. It's become "if you don't like what I say, stfu and go away".

Civilisation indeed.

Making a racist joke in social surroundings when it's clear it's a joke is fine.

When is it always going to be crystal clear that it is a joke and in no way imparts some of your views?

As was said (by Minxy I think), posters should adopt a level of respect when posting, as you would do under normal circumstances. Sadly a lot of people are much braver when hiding behind a keyboard.

I can't recall any posts of late that offended me in any way, but then you do have to develop a thick skin if you are going to post your thoughts/feelings on an internet forum for all to comment on.

I simply take note of the posts/posters who have interesting views and dismiss all the attention seekers.

OP, life is too short. Don't like something on here, just move on :)

Dependant on context, yes. Making a racist joke while walking around Auschwitz is not OK. Making a racist joke in social surroundings when it's clear it's a joke is fine.

And here I was thinking that Auschwitz was pretty much the perfect place for some good jew jokes. Shame on me.

Don't worry though. Soon you and your friends will be able to come down on me with the full extent of the law if I try to use my "freedom of speech".

Big Brother said:
-public dissemination or distribution of tracts, pictures or other material containing expressions of racism and xenophobia;

-public condoning, denying or grossly trivialising crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes as defined in the Statute of the International Criminal Court (Articles 6, 7 and 8) and crimes defined in Article 6 of the Charter of the International Military Tribunal, when the conduct is carried out in a manner likely to incite violence or hatred against such a group or a member of such a group.

So in any case, if you're gonna tell a racist joke, you better not do it on paper or perhaps a funny comic strip.

And you better not show how much of a retard you are by denying the holocaust, that's instant go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Nor shall you in an intelligent way wish to research into the historical facts of the holocaust - it happened THE END.

Now, I'm not a good joke teller, but I might as well have a go before the framework decision deadline runs out and is implemented here too, since forums certainly will come under "other material":

What's the difference between a ton of coal and a thousand Jews? Jews burn longer.

Footnote: I believe in the holocaust, I have nothing against jews as an ethnic group (Although some issues with their religion. Not enough for them to die for though, haha.). And I believe something with the amount of evidence of the holocaust and in such recent times can take inquiry and debate with the people who either doubt the whole thing or merely question the figure of 6 million jews. In all other branches of history debate is allowed between scholars - why do we chuck one camp into prison on this issue?

lol @ some of the replies in this thread.

Linda, I think you may be taking the whole racism and discrimination thing a bit too seriously, but I understand your point and why you would feel like that as I am the same race as you.

Things said on the internet does not bother me at all. If I was easily offended over something said on an internet forum, then my life would be very miserable. There are many types of discrimination that happen across these forums, but it seems they're not taken as seriously as racism. Fat people are called fatties, young people are told to grow up, unfortunate looking women are called fugly, women on these forums are told to go back into the kitchen.. :D If I got offended over these things then I would be very busy.. busy being miserable.

Most of the things said on these forums are just jokes/thoughts in general and not aimed at anyone specific. I think anyone who starts taking things seriously on an internet forum should consider stepping away from the computer/internet and get back to reality and realise it's no big deal.
