Am I?

Why did the woman cross the road?....

That's not the point, why the **** was she out of the kitchen.

***No swearing..... disguised or not!!***

I'm starting to get very disheartened with the use of discriminative words on this forum to discribe people and associated items of ethnic origin and the non racist justifications for the use of such words.

What's more important Political Correctness or Freedom of speech and expression?

Am I being too sensitive?

Discuss...

You're not being over-sensitive, you just have a brain. Personally, I don't think it's about being PC, it's about having enough wit and intelligence to mean you don't feel compelled to have to say 'Ching Chong Charlie' when someone mentions the Chinese in a thread.

But then there are many shades of grey (and many stupid, ignorant kiddies who will always think it's funny).

You can't make offending people illegal because taking offence is entirely subjective.

A liberal called Joel Feinberg has written a very convincing series of books (The Moral Limits of the Criminal Law) that disagree with you.

Why should anything be illegal? Who should determine what is acceptable and what isn't? Should merely harmful things be illegal? If so, what is actually is harm? If I rugby tackle someone in a game, should that be against the law? What if I intentially decieve somebody and they benefit from it, should that be illegal? Why isn't adultry a criminal offence when it causes far more harm then petty theft?

What makes something illegal, or more specifically, a criminal offence is an absolute nightmare to pinpoint and nobody has narrowed it down to such a simple equation. To think that making 'offence' such a cut and dry issue is to grossy underestimate how complicated concepts of autonomy really are.

Political correctness is a HORRIFIC thing, the very fact that some people despite never hearing the word ****, which I've never ever heard come up ever in any conversation or situation in my life, will continually keep it on a list of words that might potentially offend you if someone ever hears it is not a good thing.

By classifying it as offensive you give it power, by ignoring its use even if its used heavily, the word has no "extra" meaning.

Political correctness is just ridiculous, not least because the lesson it teaches kids is, you can't pick on a black kid because he's black, but because no one really fights against it, picking on the nerd is fine, no matter his colour, because "nerds" aren't a group of people anyone stands up to fight for.

Rather than teach kids being mean and disrespectful for any reason, any time, against any one for any reason isn't on, we're teaching them a list of can get away withs, and can't, and in doing so make it okay to bully one group of people, and make it rebellious, and therefore more tempting, to bully the forbidden group.

If people made no big deal out of it and just taught their kids manners, and to not be little crapbags, the world would be a better place.

Also yes, the OP is being too sensitive and not sensitive enough.

People always focus on the people being bullied and debating if the group being bullied is being overly victimised just because its racial or sexist. Should focus on the person doing it, not the race of the person being bullied.

Although you are arguing against me, I agree with everything hilighted in bold.

I guess it all depends on how you view policital correctness. I personally view it as a means of reducing potential and obvious offence. It only infringes upon freedom of speech in any detrimental way when it is obviously apparent that it is grossly unjust and disproportionate.

This. To be frank, the term political correctness should be thrown out in favour of 'politeness'. It's not politically correct to call my indian takeaway delivery man a ****, it just freaking polite!

I assume you meant the additions in bold? :p

I totally agree with the sentiment.

Avoiding calling somebody a '****' - polite and reasonable.

Baa baa 'rainbow sheep' - silly and unjust.

So to summarise:

This discussion thread that was started through curiosity has made you guys air your own personal views on racism and sexism, in theory from a few of the comments I can summise that I should go back to were I crawled from which is England where I was born and get back in th kitchen.

To simulatorman...come on have you not learnt yet? I'm female I shall never shut up, apparently we only cook and gossip. I guess you haven't had many chances to be in contact with us girlies to find out that corker!!!

The guys and girls that are defending the right to use derogatory words to describe a foodstuff you are doing there what we have to do everyday, defend ourselves. You can chose to be a not so nice human being but I can't chose to belong to a less superior race

I think you are taking people a bit too seriously. They are winding you up because you seem to suggest that anyone who uses a word that is offensive in the slightest to anyones race is in fact a racist which is ridiculous.

90% of communication is not in the words but the delivery and context. No I would never say chinky around someone asian on the chance it may offend them. It doesnt bother me in the slightest as have no problems with any race or colour. A racist doesnt stop being racist just because their choice of insults doesnt relate to your race.

If you treat someone differently because of their race, or feel that they are in some way inferior because of it then you are racist. Calling a chinese a chinky is not racist in the slightest. As mentioned, when you go abroad in certain places you will get called all sorts of names because you are british. I have never taken offence if the person is nice and doesn't seem to be rude.

Defend ourselves every day? Seriously?

What about people like me? I was bullied from my first day at school right up until I was about 15. Now as I've put weight on as an adult, I still, at 27, get people call me a fat **** out of car windows occasionally. Do I make a victim of myself? No, it does hurt occassionally, but if you go through life getting het up at the word 'chinky' then you are the one to blame - understand there are racist morons in the world, but rise above it, and realise it is also used harmlessly by many people.

I can't say I agree with all the BS about superior race and intelligence. I occasionally call the chinese a chinky and I've not got a racist bone in my body. It's harmless term of endearment for a chinese takeaway here, and whilst I'd probably take care not to use it in front of a whole load of chinese people, I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to ban it from my vocabulary because it has a different use around here.

Likewise, I wouldn't call a chinese person a '****ing chinky' under any circumstances.

Now, would chinese people would call me fat eh? That's the real question! :p

I was drinking with none other than a director of the Glenfiddich group of distilleries who poured me a single malt in a large tumbler with A cube of ice saying this was the best way to enjoy it......said director is as Scottish as the day is long and is my brother inlaws brother inlaw(make any sense lol) and I drank him and quite a few Scots under the table at the stag do in Paisley TA centre....proof that not all southerners are shandy drinking poofters :D

Psh, it's well known that ice damages the whisky. That man hasn't a clue, speak to one of the distillers! I refuse to accept he's right. Though, kudos on the ability to drink. Us skirt wearers still celebrate skills like that! :D
