Ford Mondeo : Fuel Pump £1800? O.o

Could you not just make do with one of those submersible (I can't spell?) garden pond pumps from B&Q and fling it in a bucket of diesel in the passenger footwell (cover top with clingfilm for safety)?

Don't accellerate too hard and you should be fine, non?

Totally right, do they not pump fuel at crazy speeds? So my dad was telling me.

He found out the price after buying one. Bit worried now!

Yeah, diesel pumped are high pressure compared to petrol, meaning the pumps, injectors etc are more advanced or costly

At 2001 it'll be a tddi, the mechanical pumps are, for some bizarre reason stupidly expensive.

Saying that, you should be able to find a second hand pump for sub 200 quid. A few hours labour to fit and code it - a gamble but for 300 quid it's better than effectively writing the car off

This, but iirc you don't need to code the pump, just leave the ignition on for half an hour to an hour i think when its been fitted.
:)

Fuel pump is about £600 from ford and then about 4 hours labour to fit.
£1800 is too expensive

Take it to a Bosch authorised diesel specialist. They will be able to bench test the pump and give a proper diagnosis. More often than not pumps can be repaired or reconditioned at reasonable cost.

I really would love to hear from anyone who's had a major fuel pump failure, reconditioned it for peanuts, and never had a problem again with the engine or fuelling system. The problems on these cars aren't that simple.

It does amaze me how people just seem to try and trivialise some of the costs involved with modern cars these days.

The prices i quoted are correct and yes it is that simple.

The fuel pump can be had for that price from ford, same pump as a transit. Its a recon pump and yes it can, i work for them and have had a few. Obviously i get them cheaper.

So Ford sell the pump for hundreds less than Eurocarparts? Thats odd.

Even if it is, it's still an £800+ repair bill!

Why not read what i put, I never said it was cheap i said it was cheaper than the £1800 quoted. Not all ford parts are extortionate you know.

It's because they have to pressurise fuel to over 500 bar, in my car the injectors will only open when pressure rises to above 210 bar.

They are usually reliable, I thought the Mondeo TDDI used the VP30... is this correct?

If so, they don't usually fail in the MG Rover circle, where they were used on the 25, 45, ZR and ZS diesels. The only time they do is when the timing deviation solenoid goes, causing 'tractor syndrome' (bad knock) or total non-starting.

Is this issue really that common on the TDDI then?
