I call people mate too often, I don't mind when it's close friends but I find myself saying it too much and it makes me cringe a bit.

Hate to say I say "la" (left Liverpool 21 years ago but the old lingo still sticks around...they've probably moved on in Liverpool now & call each other m8 or something)

If anything, 'man'. but I would rather allocate personal names.
I call my brother Bruv (well, lots of other things too but thats the only one on the list) and my wife babe.
For general people its mate for guys and then darlin' for women I know won't see it as some kind of harassment IE people i know.

Whether it's a man or a woman, it's always "you alrite, babes?" or "'sup babes?"
Really winds up some of the older homophobic work colleagues of mine.

This, but I have now started using it at work because I forget peoples names which is very wrong and a little bit lazy.
