I enjoy cars, course I do or I wouldn't be in here. The sig is nothing else than having no imagination though :p

I really don't care though, not at the moment. If i had something nice I'd still only do a handful of short trips in it and feel bad for not using it properly.

There's other things I have an active interest in but don't participate in much - cars are no different. Lifes just too busy to care at the moment
 
Busy enough, you've argued yourself how little time it actually takes :p

It's not just about being busy though, I'd be annoyed with myself if I had something I actually gave a toss about - it would still be sitting outside, not turning a wheel and getting covered in leaves and sap
 
The less miles you do the easier it is to justify something awesome. If you buy right you wont be putting big miles on it so it'll cost you not a huge amount in fuel and depreciation.

Is your super busy life entirely within walking distance or something?
 
Thats very true, but it still wouldn't get used much!

My only requirement currently is something that will get me 2 miles down the road when i'm too lazy or hungover to walk. If nothing else - journeys like that suck for mechanical sympathy, having something you don't care about is remarkably liberating
 
Iaind, you can surely see how it looks to some on here, that the reason for the accord and the comments is actually financial.

Whether that is true or not is not the point i am getting at, but you can surely see how it looks that way and why comments from you denying it are taken in the way they are?
 
I'm not denying it was a financial decision - when I got rid of the Saab it was because I realised I wasn't bothered enough about having a nice car to keep paying for it. The decision to keep the accord now my circumstances have changed significantly is because it wouldn't be worth the money as a better car wouldn't get used. If i was earning a significant amount more, of course i'd have a nicer car sitting outside - I'd probably be living in a bigger place too! Who wouldn't upgrade car and home if they had more money? There's probably less than 10 people on this forum to whom money isn't a consideration

What I resent is words being put in my mouth, this stuff being brought up when it's not relevant and people being downright argumentative for the sake of it

That is the most ridiculous way of pretending that it wasn't just that you couldnt afford it I've ever seen. It's why this keeps coming back, we read your posts and they are so blatantly designed to try and make it look like you are totally loaded and could buy a brand new Merc if you wanted but CHOSE to buy an old nail that its impossible to resist having another say :p

People who are just honest about it normally never have it brought up ever again. Nobody mentioned Rilot's downgrade ever again after he said he'd sold his nice car because he couldnt afford to keep it. There is nothing wrong with not having enough money to run an expensive car, it isn't an embarrasment and there is no shame in it.

The sooner you learn that evasiveness and BS-phrasing is see-through the sooner this sort of stuff wont keep coming back :p

I'm not loaded at all and ive never implied otherwise. All I'm trying to get across is that I have a disposable income - I can spend that on whatever tickles my fancy. I've tried spending it on a car but it restricted the other things so on balance it wasn't worth it. "can't afford it" implies you're struggling to make ends meet or pay the bills when that was never the case.

Yes, it may sound overly complicated, some might read it as BS but not everything in life is as clear cut as you might think

Thats like me saying I could buy a brand new E92 M3 - which I could - but then wouldnt be able to afford to do anything else.

To me that just means I cannot afford an E92 M3, end of story. No cheese, no sauce, no spin. No trying to convince OcUK that I could have an E92 M3 if I wanted but due to prioritising my monthly disposable in my action packed busy life I've decided I'd rather spend the money on other synergies.

I cant afford an E92 M3.

Maybe it would have been easier to say I couldn't afford it, but that would have been a lie. As I just said, these things arent always so clear cut - I've tried my hardest to explain the thought process, maybe I suck at explaining these things in writing...who knows

I dont understand the point? What isnt clear cut? Life seems fairly clear cut to me, especially for people with a single flat and a single income.

You get paid on a set date, net of tax. This is your money for the month.
You set up automatc DD's for the day after the above.
The day later you have the net figure for your disposable for the month.
?????

Its so very simple, either you can afford things or you cant. I agree with Fox's definition of affordability when he says that if you cant afford something comfortably then you cant afford it.

The problems come when you dress things up as mentioned many times rather than just be simplistic and tell things how they are. This forum is too intelligent to tell stories without people making enquiries :)

It's not, it has no relevance on the OP's comment.

Seems a crazy price though, glad I bought a petrol now! Had no idea that diesels had such crazy repair costs attached to them.

We've talked about Mondeo diesels for ages now, it got really boring, iaind's complicated car purchasing decisions and the knots he ties himself in trying to explain why without us thinking... I dunno, whatever it is thats so bad, is a bit less boring.

I've never once used the word synergy :p

Maybe it's just different ways of thinking - I couldn't afford an e92 m3. I don't have enough in the bank to buy one and if I financed one I wouldn't actually be able to cover the outgoings and feed myself. I'd be in debt, starving or falling into arrears on finance.

Running a moderately nice car like my old one wouldn't do any of the above (debt, death or jail), it just left me with less than I wanted to do other non essential things with.

I wouldn't put those 2 in the same category, maybe most would and that's why you're all struggling with it.

But as it happens, does seem a bit sketchy with all this "upgrading" and "money better spent elsewhere" business.

That's exactly how things work for me - everything comes out the day after pay day and it's all simple. I also know how much to leave aside to feed myself, fuel e car and the like. The grey area comes in the varying costs for things that I'd consider social, non essential, fun. I'm visiting mates next weekend - it's likely to cost a few hundred quid. I might buy the new rock bad this month too. I also see a mate most Wednesday evenings for a curry and some drinks and tend to see my best mate every weekend or 2. With a nice car I'd probably have to choose something to sacrifice - but all that stuff is more important to me than a car. Either way, the bills would still be paid and I'd still be fed 3 times a day

Does that help explain the difference between can't afford and don't want to pay for?
