how amazing is team fortress 2 !!

Dont blame them for adding the economy stuff, they have been updating this game for free since it was released. Name another game that has had that treatment where you dont have to pay a monthly sub!

Also a percentage of the money from item sales actually goes to the people who created the items, which i think is decent of valve.

I would have preferred they had left it after adding in the payload gamemode.

I would rather get custom maps from the community. The game has been raped more than CoD.

Only a couple of the unlockable melee weapons give you a distinct advantage. Axtinguisher, the equalizer and the ubersaw are definitely straight upgrades. The natascha is a horrible weapon and slows the game down, so it's banned in competitive play. I'll agree with you there. The mad milk is not an upgrade, it's a slightly different way of playing. Well, it's even that different - the role of the scout is still the same, he just has even shorter range while using it. The scout still heavily relies on his aiming and movement so the milk doesn't change anything that much.

Mad milk's usefulness easily eclipses the alternatives. A Scout can do 160DPS; a Soldier, 140DPS; a Heavy, 540DPS. That's 120HPS, 105HPS and 405HPS respectively. In comparison, the Medic only heals at 24HPS while the target is in combat. Someone who has been hit by the milk can only really run or hide.

I honestly could not care less if the hats don't fit with the original style of the game. Some of the hats are funny and the more the better as far as I'm concerned. Not having an option of useless weapons is not a disadvantage. Sure it might not be as fun for you because you might really want that huntsman, because it is indeed fun to use. But that doesn't put you at a disadvantage as a sniper.

Well... other people do. I'm only explaining the reasoning, not trying to change your opinion.

Few of the weapons are truly useless.

btw the only 3 items that cost money and can't be found via drops are the noise makers, gift wraps and crate keys. All of these are optional and only for people that want them. They have absolutely no affect on the game whatsoever. Everything inside the crates can be dropped except for some particle affects for your character, but again not game changing in the slightest. Dueling mini games and nametags can be found via drops.

Can be found by drops but it's random; you might never find some of the items.

Besides, you can still gain the weapons through the achievements anyway, so soon you will end up with weapons you don't want, and have weapons you do. Then you can either craft to get the weapon you want, or simply trade. There's a trade sub forum on the Steam forums, there used to be a thread on here as well, somewhere. As it is, the system is fair for everyone, I don't see what everyone is QQing about to be honest.

There are no achievement milestones for the polycount weapons (and a few other weapons). Crafting and trading are both extensions of the drop system and suffer the same problems. I hate the idea of spending my time trying to get a trade anyway, so I don't consider that a good alternative. Looking at the Steam trading forum, it doesn't look like anyones using it to trade weapons anyway.

For the record, I wouldn't consider a random system as fair.

Crouch + jump + shoot at the same time while looking down to get the highest jump straight up. To get a fast jump forward, you need to turn in an arc downwards and to the right, let go of w and press a as you're turning so you're still going forward (hard to explain but it makes sense - you just need to be walking forward but by pressing a instead of w) and shoot a little bit behind you. Still jumping and crouching and shooting at the exact same time. The further behind you you shoot, the lower and faster you will go.

Also, when rocket jumping you should hold crouch all the time. Never let go of crouch once you leave the ground. You'll have more control in the air and your jumps will go higher and further. It might feel weird at first holding crouch all the time but you'll get used to it.

Actually, crouching reduces your control in the air. You can also get higher rocket jumps using something called duck-tapping.

True, but the polycount weapons are all (I believe) easily craftable. I wanted the new spy knife (Your Eternal Reward). Checked the TF2 wiki, and it can be crafted with a Cloak and Dagger, and a reclaimed metal. Reclaimed metal is made by crafting 3 scrap metals. Scrap metal is made by crafting 2 identicle items, or 2 of the same class' weapons.
That would take 12 clicks to craft the knife from scratch.

The random drop system does mean it can be hard to get the weapon you want, but its just as hard for everyone else. If you do want a weapon specifically, its usually craftable.

Hmm... I really want the new scout/soldier items and hats but I don't have enough to craft them. How can I work towards getting these?

TF2 is a great game, probably the best fun you will have for the money since its on offer 80% of the time on steam. However I think the new update kind of ruined it trying to make you pay for things :( dirty valve!!

It's been a while since I played TF2. With out reading all of the thread, what are the major changes you're going on about?

Cheers

Assuming you know about the random dropping of weapons, they've added crafting and trading. So you can now craft together different weapons to get metal. Or craft together weapons to get new weapons (e.g kritzkrieg + bonk = crit-a-cola). You can do a number of things with the metal - like crafting 3 refined metals together to get a random hat. Or create a class token which can used to make a class specific hat or weapon.

They've also added a store which you can buy items for real money. Currently all but 3 items can be found via crafting, achievements and/or random drops. The ones that can't be bought are noisemakers which simply make a noise, keys which unlock crates that are found via drops (though these crates don't affect your drop rate) and gift wraps if you want to give someone an item.

As far as actual gameplay goes, they've just added a lot of new weapons. Some are fun, some are really effective (like the mad milk for the scout - "Once a target is covered in milk, 75% of the damage done to them is returned as health to any team member who damages the milk-covered enemy") but none are really essential apart from some of the melee ones. Like said before, you can get along just fine with the stock weapons. The milk is really good, but if you don't have milk and you're a better scout than someone with milk, you're still going to outperform him.

They've added a few little fun things like name tags so you can name your weapons and description tags so you can describe your weapons. And dueling mini-games, which basically lasts 1 round and keeps a record of the kills/deaths of the 2 people in a duel, and displays it publicly to the server. You put the duel in the new "action" slow, like you would equip a hat, and when you press the action button on your keyboard you can choose a person in the server to duel with.

Check that table to see what you need to craft for the weapons. These are all fairly simple, most of the time a reclaimed metal and a previous weapon for the class. The hats are a whole other kettle of fish, refined metals are very expensive to make, and there's so many hats in the game now, its going to require a whole lot of luck to get the ones you want unfortunately.

As for how to get more craft mats... simply play more. Apparently, you should get 8-10 drops per week, no more, and that a week resets every wednesday (source). Other than that, play other classes and grind achievements to get the achievement weapons?

Ah, rocket jumps. My specialty. :D

I know how to do it its just never enough for the sodding achievement. And for the demoman achievement i think i just need to find a longer level :p

The crafting things are all well and good but you still need to have 1 particular duplicate item and then enough other spare 1s for any metal. I wouldn't mind crafting Your Eternal Reward but the only way to do that is to use my only Cloak and Dagger and waste 6 other random items. They still only really work if you play the game often enough to get loads of item drops.

The number you get for free are really limited and since they don't include any polycount items you're still stuck on random luck. I still need some more achievements for Engi, Demo and Sniper.

Only found the halloween map last night, awesome.

How many other developers would constantly add this much free stuff and even do seasonal themed updates?

Very. It's the best online game I've played. I go through bouts of playing it but things like the halloween update had me playing nothing but TF2 for days until I got my Saxton hat.

The shop made no difference... its no different to things like GW offering skill unlock packs for PvP players. Of all the new items the only 1 i utterly despise is the Shortstop. I don't doubt they'll do another 1 in the future to give the other classes a new set of weapons too.

Really the only people claiming doom and gloom are the ones that didn't like the new items from the start. Its mostly annoying for people who haven't played much. I've not played TF2 since before the random drop system was in place so i'm miles behind on spare items to help me craft the newer stuff.

Edit: Well i loaded up my own server to try for the 2 jump achievements... Highland Fling wasn't even tricky, just did what i was already doing only on Thundermountain and launched myself out the map >< Where Eagles Dare was weird, i swear i wasn't jumping any higher than before and when i went to sit on the cart for 30 seconds for the achievement and to heal i randomly got the achievement while sitting there waiting...

Can't say its that weird though, i was afk for 5 mins and got put on spec and after a few minutes i randomly 'achieved' War Crime and Punishment (kill 3 enemies who have attacked your medic as Soldier) when i was speccing a scout and then later as Sniper i got Dead Reckoning (kill an enemy with an arrow after you die) while wielding the SMG when i didn't even have the huntsman equipped...

I'm only proclaiming 'doom and gloom' - as you put it because before the Scout update back in the start of 09, TF2 was a pretty well polished game. From there it has declined.

I know how to craft them, hence why I said I don't have enough spare items to make them :p

I had all the achievements before the random drop update and haven't had the time to play much since. I despise the levelling up system in the recent CoD games and things like this kinda ruin it if you don't have much free time to play.
