Can anyone recommended a new anime for me to watch? Here is what I have currently watched and enjoyed.

Initial D
Azumanga Daioh
Full Metal Panic!
Death Note

I have been recommended to watch K-On, or is there anything else I should really get round to seeing? I have seen clips of One Piece and I didn't find it that brilliant if I am honest.

I'd agree with K-On, as well as ...

Clannad/Clannad After Story
Toradora
School Rumble
Mars Daybreak
Coyote Ragtime Show
Lucky Star

With Full Metal Panic have you watched all three series?

...

@Demoniser, watched Ore no Imouto #6 earlier ... I <3 the Grandparents :p

Yes watched both 'normal' series and the fumoffu series. Must say in the end the fumoffu was my favourite! Oh and I have seen the OVA too.

From what I have seen of Lucky Star it didn't entice me for some reason, the others I must admit I haven't heard of them. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Finished watching MOHS S2 earlier ... well it's more complicated than S2 really given laack of chronological episode ordering but as I've watched "S1" several times I just ended up plowing straight through the S2 set.

I did go through all of the Endless Eight episodes ... by six and seven I was getting a bit .... arrrggghhhh (although I did watch them in two 4 episode sittings) ... but it wasn't as bad as I expected as whilst the plot repeats the details are quite different between the episodes. The other main S2 plot arc I'd already read the novel for so it's content wasn't that surprising. Overall I would say it's a reasonable watch but you have to have seen the first season and know how things link together in order to understand what is going on ... all of Endless Eight is one for the hardcore fans though ...

Latest Yosuga no Sora ... less said the better really ;)

And made a start on A Certain Scientific Railgun ...

Finished K-On!! and after a chance to reflect, I realise perhaps I was a little too harsh on my previous view, it's not a terribly bad series and I'll miss it in a way, just nothing like I would some of the series I've got really attached to.
Andi, I think you hit the nail on the head with 'I do think that the second season slipped more into slice of life + music compared with the first seasons music + slice of life'

Ultimately, in many ways K-On!! is a better series than K-On!, not only is it longer, the animation is just as good if not better (the attention to detail on stuff like actually moving fingers for chords in time to the music), and there's more of an overarching plot than the first series; although ultimately as a slice of life series, it's still limited, and the side characters are given a little more airtime/characterisation (with perhaps Sawako being an exception).

Personally though, I really missed the focus on music; it was what drew me to K-On! in the first place. The first series, whilst still being silly and all, and really being a bundle of music and tropes, felt like it contained a much higher concentration on music, or musical references (it felt like 1:1 between music and sillyness/other stuff in the first series, whilst season 2 felt more like 1:2 or even 1:3). Even the extra DVD bonus episode for season one was a live performance.
Watching the two series back to back would probably make the change in focus even more jarring.

Ultimately I found that dissapointing, the second season felt quite far away from the first in that regards; ultimately becoming a light slice of life comedy with some music, and generally the musical episodes were the ones I enjoyed the most; the rock festival for example was great, and the characters getting excited about it filled me with nostalgia for how I got excited before going to my first festivals as well.

Honestly, after a little time to sit, some of the new music has grown on me a little too, U&I and Tenshi no Fureta Yo aren't bad songs [I think Utauyo!!Miracle will take me longer]; but I need to give them more time, the overall soundtrack for the first series still felt stronger (actually strangely I felt quite nostalgic when I heard the background Cawagake Girls during the movie intro), and No Thank You is definately my favourite track from the new lot, it reminds me of the slightly more rock/music focus and attitude the first series possessed.

Humour in the second series was slightly different; personally I didn't find the second season as funny, at least from memory, as I did the first series, but then I felt a greater attachment so this may be rose-tinted glasses. Sawako though for example was quite obviously toned down/normalised for the second season.

So, revising my original score, I think I'd give the second series an 8/10, decent but not exceptional, but I do feel that the shift in focus may alienate, or dissapoint, at least some of the fans of the original series who also enjoyed the series partly for the musical aspect, as this has been heavily toned down; especially if those viewers are not that fond of slice of life.
I'll probably still watch the movie, but I do hope they focus more on the music for that, rather than the sillyness/slice of life. A mockumentary about the band a year or two later could actually be quite good, especially as the budget for a movie should allow more room for music and complicated concert sequences.

PS: No Thank You! sounds pretty good even on different instruments:

Now what to watch next...plenty of choices :)

Just thought I'd give you guys a heads-up the weekend after next (19-20) there's gonna be lots of anime films being screened in Leeds as part of the film festival, anyone who can make the trip should come, it's THE way to watch anime! :) Looking forward to Mardock and OPF:Strong World inparticular, they look amazing! They're also showing Redline, which sounds like it should be fun, and the second film in the Evangelion remakes (or are they sequels? I've never been able to keep all my Evangelions straight!), which looks impressive but I haven't seen the first film so I could take it or leave it...

One another note, I'd be grateful if someone were to recommend another anime sci-fi series for me. Something serious and high-concept, like GITS or Ergo Proxy - or Gantz I suppose.

Leeds is a bit of a trek for me, so I won't be around, but if it'd been local and I'd managed to avoid the massive guilty (pleasure) conscience, I'd probably have gone :D

Anyone know where I can get my hands on an authentic Totoro plushie in the UK? Seen a couple of eBay stores (which I won't be using) and there's nout on Amazon.

Otaku.co.uk have some (I think) ... either that, if you are feeling adventurous then benippon.com have some (but are in Japan, I've used them before with no issues).

Finished watching A Certain Scientific Railgun earllier. I saw A Certain Magical Index just after it finished it's original run which helps with knowing the settimg and some of the characters but I hadn't gotten around to watching spin-off Railgun series until now.

I thought that it was a very good series overall. Good mixture of comedy, drama and action with good characters and interesting plot. It was nice how some of the characters seemed silly but when things mattered could pull through and sort things out. I thought the last few episodes in particular were very good.

Good to know its worth waiting for then, I was going to watch that instead of K-On!! first, but held off both series [Index1/Railgun] when I realised S2 was about to air.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Railgun happens at roughly the same time as Index 1, so I'll be watching them Index-->Railgun-->Index2

Should be good fun :)

Have just started on Clannad [finally, it's been on my to watch for what feels like a long time, perhaps I'll finally crack into Eureka 7 soon! :o]...feels reminiscent of Kanon '06 so far, but I wouldnt say that's a bad thing, as Kanon was an excellent series overall, and given the same teams involved there's almost bound to be a few similarities. Only a few episodes in and already I'm enjoying the relationship between the protagonist and his hard-headed male friend...
Well I say friend, it's sometimes hard to tell haha

Yep that's about right. Railgun is a side series spin off related to the first Index series.

Given the source and animation company for Clannad it's unsurprising that it reminds you of Kanon. Whilst I agree that Kanon was a very good series I do prefer Clannad overall as I think it has a better balance of humour against the drama aspect of the show :)

I'll probably be rewatching it myself soon ... it's been about six months since I last watched it (annoyingly I worked out the other day the next 3 or 4 series I was going to watch/rewatch and then promptly forgot what I had decided) :)

Im not sure if anyone else in here plays a musical instrument, but if you do, do you ever look at anime tunes and realise that, depressingly, regardless of who played them in the show, they're nearly always high quality stuff?

Was thinking of picking up my Bass guitar again and trying to learn No Thank You, before looking at some electronic tabs and realising that its not the easiest piece in the world.
I know a few semi-professionals who make money off playing and some of the stuff they play isn't as proficient as this. :D

Makes you laugh a little when you realise who it's meant to be played by; most people I knew at that age playing an instrument weren't anywhere near as good.

I can't comment on things along the lines of the music in K-On but when I was younger I did know and used to play (in the musical) sense with people on the same sort of level as the orchestras in Nodame Cantabile ...

Kinda cool, I never got along with classical and dropped violin when I was relatively young, switched to bass guitar about 5 years ago and have been playing on and off since.

Still if you were playing the same things as some of the orchestras in Nodame, then that is up to quite proficient levels, certainly not low level amateur.

I was more talking stuff like guitars etc, there are some young prodigys or those who really focus, but whenever I see stuff like that played in series, they're nearly always quite a lot better than most people I've ever known playing at that age :D

I guess the ultimate and all powerful reason is that amateur music doesn't make money, and doesn't sell singles.

Which is why im not surprised that allot of singing characters use actual singers for their singing performances, Sheryl from Macross Frontier, Iwasawa and Yui from Angel Beats for instance. The amount of money they must have made off of the songs in those must have been enormous, same with K-On.

K-On is more of a brand/franchise than anything. Theres a few videos on ANN that give tours of a few studios, they have whole sections devoted to merchanidise. Kind of eye opening tbh.
