The 190 isn't actually a proper 190bhp engine. It's 140bhp until 'lift' takes place at high revs.

I beg to differ, I went for that engine after owning a fair few Honda's with similar engines and test driving a Civic Type-R, depends on which engine you mean specifically, the 190 or 140 the OP is discussing the 190 or at least I assume he is

Yeah I heard the engine mounts and drivetrain have been strengthened to withstand the massive sudden spike of torque as VVTL-i KICKS IN YO

Anyway, OP's not given use, mileage, budget, so hard to help further. Stay clear of the 140 though, the 190 is more fun.

Without spending several hours explaining how car engines work its pretty difficult.

Basically the bhp figure in the brochure is peak power. No car makes that power all the time.

The 140 engine isn't that bad in my MR2 right now, but yer if I do go for the Celica it will be the 190 2zz version

Mr2 is quite a bit lighter though I'd guess? I think they use this engine in some of the elises too. Ridicule me if I'm wrong

Fox, out of interest, why do you hate the vvtli engine? Is it the power delivery?
