Cam belt gone

Mainly because the camshaft will continue to rotate from momentum, bit like a flywheel. Its turning at 800rpm at idle so the chances are it will not stop dead unless something jams it, and anyway the bottom end of the engine will still be moving up and down as it gets the drive fed back through the gearbox.

I had an escort 1.6 cvh that snapped its belt and caused no damage, by chance i was going at such a slow speed that the valves and pistons didn't meet. Still took off the head to check that there was no piston damage.

laber costs will be much the same

they shouldn't be.

and it would be cheaper to get a 2nd head instead of whole engine or rebuild

he should have changed the head quite simply.

its also rare, but all valves can bend. I'd want to see them first tbh i just dont trust garages.

also, you've hit the half way house of doing a head. you're going to have to discuss with them exactly what is done or not.

i suggest you get the garage to take the head to an engineers.

It's perfectly possible to check if cam is bent without having to rebuild the entire head first, any half decent engineering shop will be able to do this.

i dont even know what he is asking :/ are the cams bent? i dont know.

are you getting new valve guides included ? for 16 bent valves id expect some of the guides to have cracks, which later on break and drop in the engine and shag it.

I will definately not pay 1k+ for repairs on that.
either go for a replacement engine or just sell yours on ebay for a couple of hundred, add the £1200 you'd pay for the repair and get yourself an astra in decent nick, should be a few around at that price.

All good advice to be honest, especially agree with:

You've done it now you've asked them to fix it.

Not much more you can do other than to bend over and wait. Completely insane thing to do on a 145k engine imo but you've done it now and cant exactly go down there and start working on it yourself.

You could ask for the bent parts at the end to see, but would you know a set of bent cams from another car from yours ? they could be from any car. By asking them to fix it you've put them with all the power and you with none.

Always amazes me when people come on here to ask for advice, after they've been bent over the garage and think they're paying too much.

If the garage have identified all 16 valves are bent but have been UNABLE to tell if the cams are bent, then I'd be trying to find a different garage. Sounds like they don't really know what they are doing.

So to summerize:

1) Scrap the car and look for another one at similar price

2) get a complete head and get them to put that on (least labour costs)

3) get complete engine from scrapie

4) get them to fix the current one (highest labour costs)

Buy a replacement engine from Ebay. Pay the garage to fit it.

This will be lots cheaper.

Hardly, £450 to £600 for an engine, can this be fitted in 3 or 4 hours ?

Clue: The answer is no.

The only reason to do this would be to have a bottom end which has not suffered such a trauma, which means you need to be confident of the engine's history. Is that Isuzu motor known for squashing bearings after a piston vs. valve event?

I doubt very much that all 16 valves are bent. You would have to be seriously unlucky for that to happen. Vauxhall will just charge for all 16 as its easy. When the belt went on my CDTi only a couple of valves were bent and i had it stripped and rebuilt in half a day. If you have any mechanical skills its not hard to do and fitting a replacement head could easily be done in a couple of hours and would be a much cheaper option than paying vauxhall all the labour costs in stripping and rebuilding the engine. Sourcing a recon head and going to an indy garage would have saved you a fortune...
