Exhaust Bungs

SuperTrapp....

Pfft 105dB? :p Wish Castle Combe was 105dB! Stupid limit of 100dB at 4500RPM is a challenge! And since the MSA put in the Blue Book that catalysts are compulsary for competition (no doubt to appease a few tree huggers ) that lost a few inches of space in the silencer so just increased the noise!

Lots of people these days whack on a extra muffler if they fail the sound test. Looks stupid hanging out the end, but does the job. http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p1576/MERLIN-MILD-STEEL-RACING-MUFFLER/product_info.html

I've always thought that bungs massively restrict the flow, so didn't pay them any attention. But a few weeks ago I met some guys that had brought along a Radical, a Prosport, and a Caterham. All of these had SuperTrapps fitted before even attempting the sound test. They didn't reckon it hindered performance much (or even at all) and reckoned they were very effective at reducing noise.

Looks really odd, but if it works it works!

There's no such thing as a Lexus Soarer ;)

The car was pretty much designed and built for the Lexus Brand in the states, but the Brand didn't exist in Japan right up until the early 00s, so it was sold under the Toyota banner there. My thinking is that my car came from Japan, it was sold as a Toyota so it's only right to call it one, but people call em Lexus to make themselves seem more upmarket.

The true 'Lexus Soarer' are known as the Lexus SC300 and SC400 in the states which are ironically pretty basic compared to what was offered in Japan at the time.

Early ones are knocking on 20 years old.

Chassis wise pretty much identical to the Supra with a few sutble differences.

Three (Well, 4) engine available. Silky smooth V8 was available for the "upmarket" cars which had a spec list that makes some moderrn upmarket cars seem basic. Then you've got cars like mine, plenty of performance from a 2.5 twin turboed Yamaha tuned engine. Rumours of a 170MPH top speed, 0-60 well into the 6 sec mark and absoultely loads of aftermarket support, the engine was later replaced by a single turbo unti with VVTI. Then you've got the 3.0 cars with the same engine available in the NA Supra and GS300. Unloved really, they don't have the toys of the V8 or the power of the Turbo cars, can be picked up silly cheap.

Loads of car for the money when you consider that you can pick them up all day long for £1,000. That doesn't mean you'll get a good one, but from experinece a bad Soarer drives a lot better than many good examples of other £1000 cars. I paid around that for mine and given the chance, I'd have saved up my pennies for a lot longer and bought a properly sorted one (Like the Purple Manual on Pistonheads ), not to say that mine has been bad. The only repair I've had to do was a replacement radiatior, but there is a long list of bits I'd really like to get sorted before I was truly happy

The Value for money thing means even more when you consider a Supra TT automatic of a similar age will command £6000+ for one worth owning, while a good Soarer, a car not much worse and arugbly better in some aspects (Have you seen a Supra's interior!?), can be had all day long for £2,500.

I love em. They're old, but so what? Even if I do get rid of mine someday, it wouldn't be long until I bought another :)

whats the difference between lexus/toyota anyways? :o

Mechanically? Nothing, Lexus is a badge that Toyota put on their cars when they sell them abroad and want them to sound more special, Honda do the same thing with their Acura brand and Matsu****a call themselves "Panasonic" outside Japan because nobody wanted to do business with a company with **** in its name.

I love this its hilarious

Buy an aftermarket exhaust in an attempt to make more power, pay a small fortune for it, fit it and o'noes its too loud, fit a bung that restricts it and we're back to square one apart from the car sounds like a wet fart

Nice

In fairness I had one in my scoob, was a nur spec-R full decat, if i had to drive it around town it got pretty tiresome being so stupidly loud, the bung was a perfect solution, allowed me to yank it out when I wanted to witness the fitness or leave it in to allow my ears to stop bleeding

simple :)

Hmmm yeah around town where you cant put your foot down it makes perfect sense but the OP did mention track and personally i'd buy an aftermarket exhaust that fits my needs, there are plenty of aftermarket exhaust options that dont make the ears bleed and provide the small gains that can be acheived from an exhaust on an otherwise standard car

All you need to do is find a way to fit the exhaust system form the Mitsubishi GTO to your car :P (it had duel back boxes and a toggle switch to shift the airflow between the standard and race ones)

I bought it because it was cheap. I could have had something built to my own specs, but I was looking at upwards of £600 for a catback dual exit system with the size pipe work that I'd like, plus a few sliencers and all that. This system (second hand) cost me £230 delivered. It's all about the monies ;)

The loudness isn't what worries me, it's getting it past noise regs. To be honest, I could wake the dead, as long as I'm happy with it and I can get on track I don't care. The car is used solely on weekends as a bit of a toy, so being loud isn't the problem, being under 105db is :).

Kakimoto aren't even loud.

Hope thats a joke lol!

If your car is turboed then it will give you a lot of back pressure and loss of power with the bungs in, but probably not to much difference compared to standard.

If you want to run it on a tracks i would suggest buying a HKS Silent Hi Power if they make them for your car or something like that.

I dont run my GTR on track so have a 4" titanium straight pipe, its nice.

It was indeed a joke. My kakimoto was the loudest thing i've ever heard and I've owned many aftermarket exhaust systems.

please no jokes about it appearing to be slow as ass. 1. I've heard it all before and 2. I blame drz's camera and the slight incline:p

SPL meters can be had for less than £50, I'd get one so you know yourself just how loud your car is. I'd imagine it's measured at 1metre.

Anything over 90db is pretty damn loud though...

Problem is that I'm only going to have a week between getting the exhaust fitted and the track day, so I'd be cutting it extremely close if it was too loud.

Think I'll take the chance. Push comes to shove I'll beg to use the workshop to let me use a ramp after work one night and stick the standard system on. Those bungs seem to be a bit rubbish.

If you do get a cheapie, make sure you measure the before and after of the two systems.

I've got a cheapo £100 one. It's really inaccurate compared with a proper one, and there's no way I'd rely on the number it says, but it is dead useful for seeing whether a change (re-packing the can) has made it go up or down :).
