Options - better cooling or new case?

The case will be fine just move the hard drives from the lowest cage to the middle cage or to the top cd drive bays.
Then remove the entire lower hdd cage so the front intake comes in better and in general tidy the cables up.

Wouldn't bother with any diy projects on this case it's not worth the cost or hassle.

Hmmm.
1 for new case, 1 for keep existing. I want this build to be as futureproof as possible and I really don't want my GPU to cook like the last one did so I'm veering towards a new case.

What should I be looking at? The Antec 300 seems to get pretty good reviews, and I've done some digging and a 470 will fit in there. The other that caught my eye was a Zalman Z7 Plus Midi. Would either be a good bet?

On a low budget I'd get the Silverstone SST-PS03B but it's not going to be dramatically different to your current case , no £50 ish case is going to be a vast improvement over that, could take a look at the nzxt hades though.

Xigmatek Utgard, Fractal Design R3 are also good cases worth considering. The R3 is the new improved model from the R2 and has great cooling while still being considered very quiet (the old one was super quiet but just a little too warm for some people's tastes)

coolermaster cm-690 ii,great case ,good airflow but a little noisy with the original fans.

Looks like an option.

R3 seems to be out of stock/pre-order in all flavours.

Seems like a toss up between the Utgard and the CM-690. Would there be any space issues with the 470 with either, and is there anything that should tip me in favour of one or the other?

Yeah, it depends when you wanted to buy the case. I'm waiting for the arctic white R3 for myself :D

There isn't much between the Utgard and CM-690 II, it depends which you prefer in terms of looks mostly.
If you wanted to reeeeeeeaaaaalllly splash out you could get the awesome Silverstone FT02 or the RV02, both really great cases. Problem is they cost it too :D

I can't justify either of the Silverstones unfortunately, and I'm not sure I'd get that much more use from them - ultimately I'm a novice.

I'm veering towards the Utgard now and spending a few quid adding fans to the case. I don't quite get how it all works - I've got the technical spec's up and am just adding fans of the right size to the basket. My understanding is theres space for 6 and 3 pre-installed, so I guess if I buy 3 cheap and cheerful and 3 decent fan's extra of the relevant sizes I should be pretty safe? Call it £50 for fans?

Struggling to get my head around it. If anyone has time on their hands and wouldn't mind picking out some sensible extra's that I'll be able add easily I'd appreciate it...failing that, I'll post up what looks sensible to me.

ETA:

Aaaaargh. I really don't have a clue what I'm doing. Could someone please post up what fans I'd need and where to put them to have a reasonably cool case that isn't going to cook anything?

If I had total budget of around £100 I would get a fractal design R3 and a couple of £4 yate loons and a couple of good 140mm fans probable total cost £100.Barring that I'd get the cheaper Coolermaster CM-690 II Advanced Dominator Case, wouldn't go near that Utgard i think although the cooling is adequate it's ugly and basic.

If the R3 is out of stock that is what google is for no law against recommending a case just because it's out of stock here.

NZXT vulcan?

if you dont mind the looks, a lot of ventilation and some really nice reviews on it (might be too small for your needs)

OcUK dont stock my case anyomore, but i would suggest it to anyone, cooling is truely awesome with two 140/120mm in the roof, 120mm on the rear, 120mm on the side 120mm on the front and if you only have 1 optical drive enough room for another 120mm in the spair optical bays.
just the looks arn't to everyones taste. and NZXT have a great customer service should you need it and its not going to break the wallet

Its not just OCuk that doesn't have stock of the R3 - a quick google shows nowhere does.
Having done a bit more digging I've changed my mind - the CM-690 II Advanced Dominator is now in my basket, along with a Corsair TX 650W PSU.

Last thing is optional fans. I really am clueless about this part - could I be really cheeky and ask for someone to post a list of what fans to stick in the basket? I'd like to get this ordered today if possible.

To be honest, you should be alright with the stock fans, but you could add two 120mm fans for the bottom, an 80mm fan on the door and a 140mm fan on the other door (don't really see why, as far as I know the rear of the motherboard isn't a particularly large source of heat) if you want to go overboard. Sharkoon Silent Eagle fans are a good reputable make, but if you want colours to match then Scythe or Akasa

So hows about this then:

2 of these 120's for the bottom:

1 140 on one door:

1 80 on the other side:

Takes me slightly over budget (£117 with the case) but I can live with that.
If that looks good I'll order them later. The case and PSU should be turning up today.

As I didn't get a reply before the cut off point for delivery tomorrow I went ahead and ordered them anyway...hopefully they'll do the job.

Case and PSU arrived an installed now. Took me about 2-3 hours to change everything across and do some cable management but I'm happy with it. Only thing I might look at doing is putting some flavour of coloured fan on the top as my case sits on the floor and there seems to be room for another top fan. Something cheap and cheerful, it'll be purely for aesthetics but will make my mind up once the other fans are in there.

Cheers for the help in getting me this far.
