***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

If people are getting consoles delivered today I would wait at least an hour for it to warm up to room temperature before turning it all on, chances are its been in a cold warehouse all night with the cold/frost and when you turn it on, its going to warm up very quickly and cause some condensation.

great advice that :) will prolly give it 2 hours or more really just to be super safe

Awesome game so far... not played much in the way of career mode, apart from buying an EK9 then completed A - B licenses.

Played in arcade for a while to get used to controls... mapped the game pad out like Forza with manual shift and it's much nicer imo. Tried out the Amuse S2K in arcade (I think)... 400+ bhp, supercharged and no assists. Wow its mental. Going to have to play around until I can find a happy medium so I can control these cars lol. Feels awesome to play. Car noises are significantly better from the outside view, well the S2k is anyway. Only disappointment so far is how the rain looks on the windscreen in cockpit mode. Feels like playing a PS2 game.

Awesome game overall... looking forward to buying a MK1 CRX!

Hammered 6 hours last night into this and have many opinions on many elements of it, however the best summary I can muster is to repeat IGN's conclusion, which encapsulates it all for me.

"GT5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped in a 5/10 game"

Take an Elise, no assists, around Top Gear track for a great demonstration of this. Sublime braking and weight transfer physics, idiotic "on rails" AI leading to bumper cars.

Its so much not what it could have been

I read that too lol.

But theyre the mainstream critics.... I want the reviews of the specialists. Sim Racing. Head over to their site. They also have a youtube page.

If you are playing it with a pad, you may as well play it blindfolded. You are missing the entire point on EVERY scale.

I completely agree. This is why i was asking.

Also, just been reading the IGN review and it says that there is no cockpit view for the non-premium cars........can anyone confirm this?

If this is the case then that is a massive disapointment.

Yep. Its true.

Wow. Im truelly shocked by this. Surely the poor textures of the non-premium cars and the lack of cockpit-view must indicate a rush to get the final product released by PD. Seems crazy after being in development for such a long time.

Sorry but the premium cars look great (Inside and out).

The standard cars are a bit of a let down but this doesnt dampen my enthusiasm to play the game. a 9 from me.

True hardcore racer... Plays good and looks good.

I don't have the option of playing with a wheel so you're telling me I shouldn't bother? I managed just fine with FM3.

Also, wtf with all the "its only just better than FM3", is that serious because I was expecting it to be significantly better :(

a lot of critics believe GT5 is tailored to the more hardcore petrol head.... Whereas Forza is aimed at the more casual gamers (good idea from turn10 as such games **** units).

I await simracing's review - Thats the only review that matters!

That's odd, I'd say the whole 'assists' on/no damage approach of GT5 smacks of casualness,

The saving grace IMO is that they've addressed most of the physics complaints of GT5p and got grip levels just right for some entertainment, however as I'm finding, it seems biased towards making you use slight assists like setting ABS to '1' or you end up with gimped brakes and car control on the limit..

FM is setup to reward you for taking assists off, apart from traction control on S/R Class cars, you need to switch everything off to get a top time on the leaderboards, as each assist is carefully implemented to make the car slower with it on. You also get more cash for not using assists and having damage on.

End of the day, neither is really aimed at 'sims', I can say with confidence right off the bat that cars are still far too easy to drive in GT5 then a proper PC sim, I took the M3 around La Sarthe in the rain, and as with all games (FM included), I can slide and control the car so easily it never feels remotely as on a knife edge as it should, in fact from the TT, you can tell they've toned it down a notch, that was quite wild at times (I loved it), but then I think this is a sign they do slightly soften these games as people would not enjoy the driving experience if it's so 'loose' as it was in the TT.

I will say, overall, apart from the braking issue, GT5 is a better experience (just) then FM, the looseness/grip levels just really make it enjoyable, it has got limited FFB which numbs it a little, but comparing both back to back, I'm happy with GT5
This does mean FM needs to work on it's default grip levels, it's already got slightly more communicative FFB (you feel when the tyres lose, then regain grip), and wheel spinning from the line is much better felt and represented in Forza, as are the inter-evhicle collision physics.. Even the Audio is probably still that little bit better..

All IMO, I rate GT5 slight ahead of Forza overall, mainly in the variety of events, and the more entertaining grip levels/initial feel to the physics.

Actually, I'd say there are differering 'tiers' of both cars, you can't tell me that the B-Licence test cars, in interior view are really top notch? The 147 as I pointed out earlier, the little MFD next to the speedo is blurry/low res and the plastics aren't well textured at all, they look quite flat, as do most of those cars.. but get to more exotic stuff, and suddenly there is far more texture and things start looking much more convincing. The same goes to some extent on Standard cars, some look great, some definitely look all jaggy with sticker lights on the back..

I'm not picking on you btw, GT5 is growing on me, and I don't think anything mentioned is game breaking, it's just slightly disappointing when you can go from a graphical high to a low in just a few seconds. The blockiness around the windscreen wipers when cars in front are throwing up spray hit me like a sack of spuds, as did the low res rain, especially after seeing F1 2010's amazing rain effects on the 'camera'..

Damn...the top gear challenge with the 111r with no assists whatsoever is insane. Almost undrivable for me, had to turn a few assists on to even control it decently.

As much as I'd agree that for the best experience you should use a wheel, I have completed every GT game using just a pad.

I do however have a DF GT, but one of the clamps has broken, so I'm going to take it home and modify it :D

Well either you're a good driver or you had the assists switched on.

Either way I look forward to seeing your track times (if you still have the game).

Add me D-MVN
