Student protest today - spec me a sign

You said that subjects like Theoretical Physics should be reduced to hobby learning and not proper academic study.

No, I didn't.

What I said was that there is still nothing to stop people from studying those things in a world where degrees are only available in subjects that lead to the greatest financial return. Academic study shouldn't be about money, which it currently is and has been for a long time. Anyone claiming that it's only just becoming that way is just incorrect. The majority of degrees are taught so that the person who gets it can make money/power/control/vanity for someone else.

I see they are moaning about EMA too... I went to college to learn stuff, not so I could get free money for booze...
Don't get me started on EMA!

My mates got EMA at school. Not a single one of them needed it. (And that's their words not mine).

The whole point of the EMA was when Timmy goes "Mum, I want to stay at school and do A-Levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry" and Timmy's Mum goes "I'm sorry Timmy, but we need you working up chimneys. After your father died we just don't have the money to put bread on the table. We need you out earning for us to survive."

One of my mates bought a new cricket bat each year with it, another just whacked it in a savings account and every penny of it is still there today. The rest just spent it on crap.

I don't have a degree but I have a well paid job, should I pay for someone elses optional further education? If you think the answer to this is yes, you're a moron.

Don't know if this has already been posted, but did you hear about the people in the kettle who were calling 999 saying they were being held against their will? Absolutely brilliant :)

Incidentally, the teach in at Newcastle Uni was fantastic, just a shame it's doubtful if i'll ever get to go there as a student. Still, the lecturers and other speakers turned up to show their support for this:

Just wish i could have stayed longer, damn man flu...

Yeah, 'cos trespassing always works.

Also liked this comment:

I don't think they're preventing lectures or learning from taking place. Also; shouldn't students have some influence over the funding decisions taken by their university?

Well, no... because they're students and not university administrators or educators... ? It's not even 'their' university. What are you on about you crazy loon?

Get on these ****ers, demand, demand my arse if you want to get a degree suck it up and pay what it costs.

Why not? The only thing stopping you is your grades surely?

Oh no, my grades are fine. I just don't have a spare 30k kicking around, at least, and i'm sane enough not to be prepared to start my life by having huge amounts of debt that i likely won't actually be able to pay off while i'm still alive.

It will cost you nothing to do the degree itself. If you then start utilising your degree and get a well paid job you start paying it off a bit at a time. If you don't utilise the degree or you decide to do something that doesn't pay well (volunteering, charity work etc, McJob or whatever else you decide to do) then you either pay a tiny amount each month or nothing at all.

I haven't been keeping up with this but am I correct that it will mainly be students on non-technical courses that will face higher fees?

If that is the case I can only see it as a good thing, when I went to university and since then I've got the impression that many people go to university just to get a degree and therefore pick a relatively easy course like arts, humanities etc. that mainly set you up for employment that doesn't benefit the country financially.
If these fee increases force more people to study technical courses like science, engineering, medicine etc then it's a great thing, the best way of getting the country out of financial difficulty is investing in the industries where we can export stuff like engineering, R&D, manufacturing (although it's difficult to compete with the far east), pharma, software etc. and we need people with technical qualifications for that.

Do the degree you want and get a job earning £20,999 then. :o

In which case, why would i get a degree to get a better job? Why would i not just get a job after doing A Levels and start earning at least three years earlier?

Come off it, tuition fees are unfair full stop. The only purpose they serve is to make sure that the rich get all the good jobs and therefore stay rich.

What?

You should want to get a degree to expand your knowledge of whatever subject it is you want to study, for your own enjoyment. Because you have the opportunity not to?

I HAD to get a job at 16 and start earning years before my peers, because if I didn't I'd have no place to live. Jesus christ.

Your second point is just ignorance. If you get a good degree, you can get a good job and become rich. Therefore it's fair that you should pay for what enabled you to achieve that, no?

Most of the actual rich people get degrees just because they can, not because they need them since most actually rich people get jobs working for their dads mates or whatever without interviews. Otherwise they get them for the same reason you do, to expand their knowledge and pay their way. What's the problem?
