***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

Interesting,

Eurogamer: What's not perfect? You said on stage you're going to be upgrading every week, every month – what specifically do you want to work on?

Kazunori Yamauchi: That's sort of a surprise we're keeping for the future. Once games go online it's no longer the type of thing where you just make it, hand it over to the players and they go out and play it. Games will keep evolving.

Now it's released we're going to have several million people who'll become citizens of Gran Turismo. From here on we have to listen to their voice and see what they want and change the game accordingly to match their needs. So Gran Turismo really is just at the starting point, it's really the beginning and we're just going to evolve from here.

Looks like this game is going to be getting a lot of support and evolving over time.

So what do we all think PD having being doing for 5-6 years then ?

I'm sorry to say this, and it's just my opinion, but Forza 3 is a more enjoyable game in my mind, particularly it seems more suited to Western gamers.

Let's say Forza 4 comes out with day/night cycle, dynamic weather and some different disciplines (say rally), what would then be the better game ?

I would seriously like to get the general consensus of how Japanese gamers think about GT5, because to me PD are arrogant eastern developers, with their heads in the sand. Western racing sim/arcade racers have moved on in the past 10 years, why haven't PD ?

I don't mind downloading fixes and additional content for games... to me its just good customer care nowadays.

I know, in the PS1 and PS2 era it wasn't possible to patch up games, and GT5 has been in a long development cycle, but nowadays we expect so much fromg games, it must take a long time to put this stuff together, and a lot work..

If the patches fix the issues then I don't mind... Its all good in some way..

Oh and is GT5 just one of the most additive yet VERY hard to master games in the series yet? I can't seem to put it down, and I'm always going for that one extra gold, its hard but rewarding once you do it...

Like that sodding camper van race.. !! lol

The Eurogamer quote, didn't we hear exactly the same thing from Turn10 about the last 2 Forza releases?

Once the games out, we'll have a vocal community, it'll be like a sandbox, they will guide the games development, blah blah blah, etc...

It's just a standard statement to make after a game is released?

Yeah but, why are patches getting release now lol ? I mean they have had the best part (maybe more!) of a 1 year extension to test things out ?

Why are we waiting for a patch to put damage into the arcade mode ?

I hear the patch fixes performance issues, was this something magical they found in the past few weeks then ?

Is it true a patch is required to allow brake upgrades ?

I think over 5 years the western gamer has been spoilt with too many games, giving them too much choice and little in the way of free thinking.

I'm enjoying this so far. I love the EK9 Civic, it's the only car I'm driving at the moment, I sell any car I win.

The Lotus Elise top gear special event is a joke. It loves sticking it's back end out. :(

I love GT's style though, it's different to other racers, it's hard to explain, GT is just it's own thing and I think people like that, I love Forza but I wouldn't want GT to be the same otherwise it would be GT any more if that makes any sense.

Yeah I do understand that, and I do agree with it, I think I just expected so much more what with the long development time. I kinda hoped that they had played Forza 3, and decided that they wanted to do some things differently to beat it, but I do not feel GT has the maturity and features particularly that Forza 3 can provide for on-line racing for example.

I remember reading a statement some time ago, where Kaz had been asked what his thoughts where on Forza 3, and he replied along similar lines to "what is that ?"

I just wanted GT to move on more, instead I feel like it's GT4 HD (and SD of course for 800 cars ;) )

Ah cool, no-one said anything in text chat and I didn't see a mic icon so I assumed the worst.

Would be great if we can stick to voice chat instead of text (assuming people have mics). I find the chat bubbles that appear highly annoying and distracting.

I dont use voice chat when its late at night as it usually wakes someone up :p. I try and use it most of the time - though usually ends up Im the only one talking it seems...

Who cares as long as it drives well, which it does. I swear some people lie when they say gameplay > graphics :o

There is a limit to this. Gameplay is more important than graphics to me. I'll happily play older games that look dated if they are fun. Lets take an example. Half-life 1 (although I play a lot of very old game). That game is over ten years old, it looked awesome when it was released but now it obviously doesn't. But it's an old game I expect that. However if Episode 3 was released and looked like HL1 I would not be happy. This is 2010, you have a minimal expectation when it comes to graphics. I don't mind if a game isn't at the complete cutting edge. Id rather sacrifice graphics a little for the sake of things like a solid and constant 60fps. But in comparison to the competition a game released now that looks like a 10 year old game isn't worth my money.

So, looking at GT5, I don't expect to buy a brand new game in 2010 on current gen consoles and experience graphics similar to that of a game released in 2004. If I wanted that I would just play GT4 on a PS2 and save the cost of a PS3. Games like F1 2010, DIRT 2 and Forza 3 look great, why should PD get away with parts of GT5 looking substantially worse than these game?

The other problem is not the gameplay v graphics argument, it's the inconsistency. GT5 has some impressive visuals. We have seen what GT5 can do, it can look bloody good. When you see what the engine and system is capable of and then experience sub standard graphics in the very same game it's bloody annoying! It's sloppy and lazy on the developers part and raises questions with me on weather they deserve my money or not.

That is highly annoying but epically great at the same time.

Want realism? Here, have realism in bucket loads (*Minus damage, but if your driving properly you don't touch anyone/things hard enough to break things properly!

That will be why the best racing drivers in the world never crash. Oh wait...

If you are not crashing your not pushing hard enough. Driving on the limit is very a much a risk versus reward thing. That aspect is completely lost in GT5. There is no thrill or tension when driving on the absolute edge during a race as you know you will just bounce of the wall and back onto the track with just a few scratches.

Guys can you leave any general discussion/question to the main thread please - this is really to get people hooked up and get some MP going...

First post updated with Vent details...

Loading times have improved from last night, that's one thing!

In many areas the graphics and sound are not as good as Forza 3. The sound is especially :(.

Finally got to play on the Nordschliefe, and it seemed a lot easier than the Forza equivalent. I could actually get round the Karusell without being spat out. This bodes well. ;)

Online will be my next test. No idea how GT's variant works.

Can someone write a guide on how to complete the Camper van Top Gear race? just in simple terms saying how many cars should be takeable (and be it inside or outside) on each corner. I get the feeling even if you win it will be quite tight, so would be good to know a turn by turn.

For instance, is it possible to takeover on the 1st turn, or am I wasting time/speed in trying this?

I don't know fully, maybe sony forced PD to release the game now in its current state as it had been delayed too long and sony needed this one out for christmas etc to shift PS3 units?

Performance increase sounds a bit odd... Guess as the game was being pressed they continued to work on it, and the patches are not only new stuff, but stuff they didn't get in before the game went gold..

Anyhow, least the game looks like it 'might' be cared for now its out any everyone is playing GT5.

Or from some posts throwing DS3 pads in anger..!!

If your going to come out with stupid statements like that then just GTFO seriously, even I've been criticising certain aspects of this games graphics but they are noway as bad as you infer, in fact overall they are very good, but just not quite up to what we was expecting from PD.

EDIT -

It seems you've edited that out of your post now, but anyway I still think your being a bit to harsh on the graphics, I have issues with them also but they are not bad, and with regards to F1 2010, DIRT 2 and Forza 3 looking better I think that's more to do with your preferred artistic styling, those games looking amazing but they have a more 'cartoonish' look to them, (I don't mean that as a downplay), where as GT tries to go for a more realistic graphical styling which is a lot harder to do.
