Student protest today - spec me a sign

My god, what is wrong with this forum? What it it about computer hardware that attracts so many right wing bigots?

Well not really.

From what I can make out, what they are basically saying is - why should someone that decided to start work and not do further education pay for someone that wants to do it just so they can earn more (usually).

If you want to get an education that allows you to get a well paid job then pay for it, its the way life works - if you want something, work for it.

There's more to life than personal gain, you know.

Then please tell us why you are wanting a degree etc if not for personal gain and what it will bring ??

It's more to do with the fact that a lot of people here are older than 20, have life experience, have been through the stage that you're going through and realise it's pointless, leftie-angst slacktivism. Still, you've got to get it out your system, haven't you.

Urgh, i wasn't going to reply any more, but seriously. We have the support of the NUT, the local Councillors, many of our teachers and staff, hundreds of thousands of people in the country and millions of people in Europe alone. Stop pretending that we're the minority, because it's simply not true.

Hell, i wouldn't be surprised if there was a general strike over the cuts.

Things like nursing and accountancy don't need a degree, they need on the job specific training better given in a workplace apprentice environment.

Most of the boards require a degree to gain any form of Chartered Accountant status.

If there is then I certainly won't be striking, I will be going into my place of education to work as normal.

But you are in the minority, as you don't have 50%+1 of the population supporting you. Now now, run a long, they are selling hemp sandals (made in an Indian sweatshop) for only £49.99 down the road!
Why would people strike over this?

Unless you have support of more than 50% of the population you still fall under the category of "minority". It may be a large minority, or it may be a small minority, we really don't have the figures. I quick straw poll of the Web Tech lecture this morning suggested about a 50/50 split as to if they think it is a good idea or not, with no one at all bothered enough to go and protest.

Hell, i wouldn't be surprised if there was a general strike over the cuts.

I have no doubt some of the unions will call for one, if it happens or not is another matter.

So what? That happens every time there's a large student protest. Wheel 'em all out. Do you honestly think the Conservatives didn't see this coming?

Stop pretending that we're the minority, because it's simply not true.

I never said you're a minority. You are, however, a cliché. And this backlash was totally predictable. It won't change anything.

Get it off your chest son, it wont hurt for long :)

hundreds of thousands of people in the country

hundreds of thousands of people out of 60 million people is a very very small minority.

even at 900,000 it's still only 1.5%.

You are a tiny minority.

Yeah, bloody students, wanting everyone else to pay for their degree! So selfish!

:D

They pay for it themself anyway, this is an increase in contributions not the introduction of them.

No, more like the selfish 'I'm already there' provocative nasty sentiment that eminates from here on a daily basis like a bad case of body odor.

I also hate this 'someone else pays'. Its ****. We live in society, and some grumpy stuck up prat somewhere can always apply that to almost anything. It doesn't mean a jot in isolation.

I agree, it doesn't mean a jot in isolation, but this isn't in isolation. The prime beneficery of a degree is the person taking it, they benefit the most from it. Surely then it makes sense if they also bear the lions share of the cost? Especially if it is structured so that you don't pay anything up front, you only start paying it back once earning a reasonable amount and the interest you are charged depends on how much you are earning?

It still costs you nothing up front to do a degree and if you never earn a large amount of money you will still pay nothing for it.

God bless the comprehensive spending review. For so long the state has grown unchecked; funding so many things for so many people, and the deficit is hard cold evidence that we cannot sustain it. As part of these cuts/reviews/whatever the government departments had to go back to the drawing board and look at everything that they spent, and be able to justify everything. In the process lots of things dear to peoples hearts are going to get slashed, one of these things is the unsustainable 'degrees for everyone!!!1' system we have today. Unfortunately desperate times call for desperate measures when it comes to saving the country's economy, not all of them are going to be popular to everyone. We have to find a way as a country to live within our means and nobody has ever said it is going to be easy.

You're born with nothing and nothing is owed to you. These aren't the boom times anymore people, hold onto your butts.

Yup. You can't have a government increasing the amount of students over the years and then not realise it has to actually be paid for in some way.
