195/50/15 - What tyre?

Given the fact that tyres in the 195/50/15 size are so cheap why not spend the extra and get proper premium tyres rather than getting a set of "Meh" ones like T1Rs?

So they have soft sidewalls, sue them. They're extremely good for the money, and only marginally less good than the Eagle F1s, which I am also lamenting the demise of in 15" guise. Mind you, mine seem to be lasting forever, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it ;)

Says the man with a random part worn ling long on his 'supercar' ;)

The good news is that I'll be replacing it with a Goodyear F1 to match the other side on Saturday . The bad news is that the new tyre is a part worn too :o. Can't justify buying brand new tyres for what will soon become my spare set of wheels.

Anyway, I get "cheap but decent" tyres in expensive sizes. For example for my next set of wheels I'll want to be running 275/40/17s out back and with the difference between "cheap but decent" (Kumho KU31) and "Premium" (Pilot Sport 2) being a staggering £245 PER CORNER, I can just about justify going for the cheap option :D

When we're talking about a 15 quid per corner difference I'd find it difficult to justify not going for the Contis. It's a bit different If it's a hoon car and you're expecting to burn through tyres you're expecting to burn through tyres anyway.

Also, I've never actually used the internet for tyre shopping (I usually get a nearby garage to get close for conveinience). What happens when you order from Camskill? They drop 4 tyres at your front door? Then find a fitter?

yeah i ordered 4 tyres last year and they drop them at your door and you find a fitter, my local tyre garage fitted them on my x type at £5 a tyre i think it was

just out of curiosity do any of you chaps run winter tyres all year? been reading a review in autocar a few weeks and was just wondering if when im getting new tyres next would it be worth it

What car is it?

On my Integra I found the KU31 to be much better than the T1R, T1R felt sloppy

Haven't lost grip or had any wheelspin with the KU31 and is nice and solid through the corners.

MX5 owners seem to love the T1R

Different cars suit different tyres

Got Michelin PE2s on my zetec s. After doing a bit of research, these seemed to get the best user reviews. Can't really compare them Toyos or anything as I only had cheap tyres on this before (previous owner).

What's the car they are going on?

I thought the general concensus was the Toyos were good because they were cheap, not that they were an amazing tyre just that they offered good value? Have heard the Toyos have poor wear rates and wet performance is naff.

They're for a 2001 Puma 1.7...

See this is my problem, I thought T1-Rs were supposed to be an average performance tyre. In an ideal world, Goodyear would still make the excellent performance tyre I used to use, but they don't, so I'm stuck with trying to find the best wet performance in their absence. I'd hoped that an average performance tyre would offer better wet grip than the model focussed on providing greater wear rates or fuel economy.

What the hell happened to the GSD3's in this size?!

Tell me about it...

The 2010 EVO tyre review suggests that the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo is quite good in the wet. The same test also puts the KU31 as being pants. But then Camskill is putting the T1R at £30 per corner inc vat!

Edit- the S1 Evo is only an extra £5 though.

I googled for the Evo 2010 tyre review, but neither the S1 Evos or KU31s were featured? EDIT: The EVO 2010 FWD puts KU31 bottom on poor wet performance.

If only to irritate Fox, the UniRoyal Rainsport 2 seems to one of the best rated in this size, placing 2nd in the 2010 Evo test behind Conti CS3's which aren't available in this size.

The T1R is a rubbish tyre. Is the Goodyear F1 Assy available in this size?

Unfortunately not... :(

Now I think about it, I think when I had my Rover I had to go down to 195/45/15 to get GS-D3s...

Still no stock available though... :(

I had Uniroyal Rainsports on my old Polo, Really good tyre in my opinion & as they cost me less than 40 quid a corner fitted they suited me perfectly.
I have Kumhos on the front of my pick up & they feel good as well. I know both motors are slow & hardly likely to push a tyre but i do tend to keep my corner speed comparitevly high as it's the only way to make any progress when you only have about 3 horses pulling you, I say 3 horses & mean 3 old Nags. :D

I noticed the T1-Rs were cheap, and I remember them from when I had my Rover, I just wasn't sure if they were any good in the wet?

Having compared them pretty much back to back on my car I'd say that the Toyos aren't quite as good in the wet as GSD3's but there isn't a big difference. They certainly aren't ditchfinders, and on a light car like the Puma they should work pretty well.

Have we used Event Tyres before?

Their website reckons they can come to me and fit them tomorrow morning.

It definately needs new tyres as when I borrowed it recently it was hammering it down, and it kept threatening to spit me into the barrier if it so much as looked at standing water. I'd planned to get the alignment done at the same time, but SWMBO only passed yesterday so the likelyhood of her knocking a kerb or 12 between now and Christmas is pretty high, so I might just get that done later...

Spending my Saturday morning at home with a sausage sandwich sounds like a much better plan than a cold waiting room... :)

I've had T1-R's, Eagle F1 GSD3's and have currently got Michelin Exalto PE2's at the moment. I'd say the PE2's seem to be every bit as good as the Eagle F1's but are wearing better. The T1-R always seems a bit soft to me.

So can anyone actually confirm that they no longer make the Eagle F1 GSD-3 In 195/50/15? :(

I have two sitting spare in the garage, and four on my car. Seems a great shame if they no longer do them.
