I suspect I have bedbugs

Stage 3 is hard work. Got through most of my bedding, just my pillows to go. My quilt didn't fit in the washing machine, so I Raided and hoovered it twice. My mattress has now had 3 Raid & hoover cycles, and I've had to go out and buy more Raid. On the plus side, I wasn't bitten at all last night - no itchiness, no new bites, just a lingering odour of insecticide.

Interesting dmpoole fact number 5,348 :
I used to be allergic to bed bugs when I was about 28 and had to have 2 years of weekly injections.

I can only assume that since we haven't heard anything from him in over a week, that he's dead. RIP Deadbeat. You will be missed. The bedbugs will also miss you! :)

Well, now it's a matter of waiting. Pestilence spoke true when he said that Raid wasn't going to do the trick, so I picked up a kit and DIY-fumigated about 5 days ago. Currently I'm renewing the powder every couple of days and haven't had noticeable problems with the buggers - I'm getting a few itches, but not localised and not severe. No new bites, so I suspect the itching is a reaction to the insecticide powder, but I'm gonna keep refreshing it every couple of days until it runs out. So far, so good.

DIY pest control has failed. As soon as I'm not at work any more I'll be phoning Rentokil to find out how much their services will cost and weigh that against the cost of getting a new, comfier mattress. I'm quite put out by the fact that I've been slumbering in several forms of pesticide for a month now and they're still around. To my knowledge there's no nuclear power plants newr my address, so the possibility that they're radioactive, super-powered bedbugs is slim, but the house is built on what used to be an abandoned, empty plot so there is a significant risk of ancient voodoo mutation. Either way, these little ****s are proving to be a little bit immortal.

Are you sure your cat hasn't just got fleas?

Positive. Fleas are more visible, the bites hurt more and they're not strictly nocturnal. My cats also get treated monthly for fleas because they're out and about so much, the same with my dogs - and none of them scratch to any excessive degree. Plus, while I've not actually seen one of the little buggers yet, I've found traces. It's bedbugs.

So they survived your chemical onslaught ?

You should try some Blitz, I bet Rentokil will charge £1-200

Any experience with this? I used the Insectrol pack (kit 1) from this site and it seems to have done little to no good. I'll try the spray listed above, but I have to admit I'm skeptical. This is the last resort before Rentokil gets called in.

Well, having read through this entire thread - many people did tell you so :P

Good luck, hope you eventually get rid - I would get the professionals in before getting a new bed, though, no use wasting money on giving the bed bugs a shiny new mattress to inhabit!

We brought some of these buggers back from scotland once, we had pest control out twice and nothing worked, in the end I bought a new bed and they came back and infested that, I was gutted so went on a rampage, You need to find the nest (you will know when you find it) and spray it until you can't breathe with raid, that is the only thing that worked for me

I didn't realise they had nests - that's news to me!

Yeah, the wallpaper had come away from the wall slightly in a corner behind the bed and they were all hidden in there.

They only came out at night to much then went back to safety, they could be hiding in any tiny gaps in the bedroom, look carefully

Yep, as he says, they'll nest somewhere hidden, but close to your bed, then venture out safely at night to feast. Once they're full, they march back to their little hidey hole.

Apparently, a large infestation causes a smell similar to rotting meat. Have you noticed that at all when lying in bed?

No, nothing that pervasive. Since I've been dousing my bed in insecticide and sleeping in it from the earliest days, I imagine I've kept the population down somewhat. Not enough to stamp them out, clearly, but I expect they would have become a much more serious problem over the last month or more had I not been zealous and enraged from day one. The annoying thing is that a number of times since I've been applying the proper stuff, I've gone to bed and had no sensation of itching at all - enough to make me hope they were all dead, until it started again the next night.

I've ordered 4 bottles of that stuff suggested above. Hopefully it'll come Monday, maybe tuesday. When it arrives, everything's getting a 90C blasting again. I can't wash my quilt because it's far too big, so I'm going to use one bottle to douse it and hang it outside overnight. The next day I'll hand-wash it in the bath at as hot a temperature as I can stand underneath two pairs of marigolds. After I've hung my quilt out and cleared my room, I'll hunt for the nest - another whole bottle is going on that and the surrounding area/furnishings/skirting/anything that remotely resembles a nook or cranny. I'll spray my mattress with a third, and keep whatever's left of that and the fourth to periodically douse the old nest area and maybe my bedding once it's all clean again. Once the bottles are all used up, I'll wash my bedding again and see how it's all panned out.

Can't be bothered looking back through the thread at present, but did you try any of the DIY bug bombs to fumigate the place yourself?
