Student protest today - spec me a sign

Police blocking routes and causing aggression

Peaceful protest is peaceful.

Maybe that is a result of the previous demonstrations, the students are to blame.

They are currently throwing bottles at the Police near Nelsons Column, as well as writing graffiti all over it, did the Police make people daub a landmark in Graffiti?

Fatima had planned to be the first in her family to go to university until she heard about plans to treble university fees to a maximum of £9,000.

'Proud of me'

She also has the support of her mother, who is currently on benefits, to go on the protest.

"I come from a very poor background. My mum's very, very proud of me - if they raise tuition fees I may not be able to go to university," said Fatima.

"I know I don't have to pay for the fees up front but with all that interest I just don't know that I would ever be able to pay them back."

Is it me or is this lass is not thinking clearly? Surely she has no confidence in her earnings potential with the degree she's planning on taking? Worst case she won't pay anything back...

If people are so sure that they won't earn enough to pay back the loan, then perhaps they should be asking if university is really the right route for them? Even with arts degrees, you can still earn well from teaching and paying back the loan won't exactly be a hardship.

Watching sky. Apparently the mood from the students changed when the police had the audacity to arrest a student who was taking a bathroom break in the street. What did they think the police would do upon seeing somebody do that? :D

A Uni thread?

SUPER!!1

i can gloat!

NER NER NER i got the last year where the fee's are 3.2k LOL

And guess what, when im at uni up to PHD level i will still only pay 3.2k!!1 BWAAHAHAHAHA

It doesn't, it is al about the internal debate within the Liberal Democrat party. Cable supports the fee increase, he drafted the policy, abstaining is a gesture to the party.

And you don't think for one second that these huge multiple protests from students has not swayed him?

If the students had not gained so much attention from these protests then this change to fees would have been swept under the carpet and passed by Government easily.

Get real.

So that makes it perfectly ok to take a leak in a busy street surrounded by coppers?

No, but last week i was at the protest and there were two corners where quite a lot of people went to the toilet (girls included!). I'm not condoning it but the police need to show some consistency.

Only the extremists seem to have turned up for this one, some shocking scenes on the news (not to be trusted though).

Its nothing to do with consistency really. It could simply have been they had higher priorities last week. You cant simply treat every situation the same where large crowds are involved, with so many people there must be numerous factors to take into account.

And... guess who was out today! :D

Police were behaving like thugs though, been taking lessons from London? Seriously, settling us in the middle of Northumberland St.? And i got thrown against a wall... if anybody sees officer 2603 - they're a ****er. Then afterwards congregating outside Newcastle Library, which the staff certainly weren't happy about.

At least their attempts to trap us in Newcastle Uni failed :)
