Iphone or Andriod: Which first smartphone for Oxy?

Unless you ripped Sense out of the ROM you were using which is quite difficult, then you were still using Sense.

Launcher Pro is only a home screen and application draw replacement, you were using it instead of Sense's home screen which is known as "Rosie".

Without Sense, you wouldn't have the better camera application, better contacts application, better dialer, better email client versus the stock Android versions.

I don't get the obsession with LauncherPro, running it on top of Sense gains you nothing but visual improvements (cooler looking app draw, home screen rotation, no icons) at the cost of using more resource as Sense is running in the background still.

Running it without Sense, gives you Sense like widgets but you lose the better Sense applications.

End result - either way, running Sense on its own is the best option.

I never ran it on sense i used custom roms without sense ;), couldn't see all the fuss with sense ui was much snappier on a stock rom.

hehe it's just all new to me you see...

I still have a Nokia phone that I don't even think can go on the interwebs.

Well, in short, it will do everything your mates iPhone can do, and more. In very much the same way. :)

You could set up the software almost indentically to his iPhone if you really wanted  :p

The Sense UI is one of the main reasons for Androids success, its very under-rated, it does A LOT.

So, lets assume I can source an SF, would you get a TFT white if thats all there is? Remeber that I only saw my first iphone last night hehe... I would rather save £100's now and see if i like the smartphone concept before going fo a super terminator phone...

How would one go about changing the SF onto say Tesco/o2/giffgaff?

How can I delete all the orange branding gash and make it sexy?

I dont know, I suppose for you it wont make a great deal of difference.

Go here and unlock it, then put your simcard of choice in.

You can, you need to flash a new ROM on to the phone I believe, check the SF thread on here for more info.

If his mate has a I4 it doesn't do things better, higher rez, better video camera better app market, I would take the I4 over Android any day much more polished phone and this ridiculous thing about dropped calls I never had one, but I wasn't a fan of Itunes.

You have to admit if Apple hadn't released IOS and the Iphone we wouldn't have anything like this now, they are the ones that started this whole phone revolution off, hell when the Iphone was out I had a LG Viewty which at the time was classed as the top phone and IOS destroyed it and paved the way to what's about now.

Android has been in development by Google since 2005 and before that, in development by Android Inc who Google bought.

The first iPhone didn't hit market until 2007.

Snappier in a benchmark, yes but in general use there's no slow down on a HTC Sense ROM. I've used DeFrost and OpenDesire and all three HTC releases and always end up going back to Sense because it has more features:

  • Camera - HTC Camera has touch to focus, face detect and more image settings than stock Android (stock doesn't mean Cyanogen mod).
  • Email Client - Can send exchange meeting invite requests and set out of office messages, can't do that on the stock Android client.
  • Contacts - More infomation linked from Facebook than the stock Android contacts application.
  • Dialer - T9 dial shortcuts, again, this doesn't appear in the stock Android application.
  • FM Radio
  • There's loads more as well, including improvments to the web browser.

We're talking about software, the SF can do just about everything the iP4 can do from a software perspective.

OBVIOUSLY its not a better phone all round is it, for £99? Jesus

I'd agree the iOS software is more polished than an Orange SF, but its not more polished than Sense UI, it was at the time of the HTC Hero, but not any more :)

The ridiculous thing about dropped calls? You never had one? Well, surely that means NOBODY HAS EVER HAD ONE THEN DOESN'T IT...

I think you need to stop stating your experience like its a fact. The iPhone has DOCUMENTED (admitted by Apple) faults with its design, yes it wont matter if you are in an area with a certain type of signal/good strength, but it is there and it does happen.

I can't stress enough how much difference it makes when you consider how you use your phone.

Like the Omnia 7 user on the first page loved his phone and thought it was snappier than the iPhone 4. I just come back from a lads weekend and one had just bought an Omnia 7 and utterly hated it. Seeing him navigate through the menu was painful, click... wait... stilll waiitting... ah there we go. He owns a software company so I'm guessing he had it fully loaded.

It was obviously faulty then, none of the WP7 handsets are slow, especially the Omnia 7. They navigate as fast as the iPhone 4, easily.

I don't see why people are recommending iPhones or tip end android phones tbh.
The SF does everything and more than needed.

Oxy, not sure why you are worried about rooting and sticking 2.2 on, you aren't looking to do much with the phone, nothing that will stress the phone in a way to male it bad.

And in the op there is more to the request, same with further posts.

There is no need for an iPhone4 or a top end android.
The thread is turning into the typical iPhone v android with all the same points by all.

If you were running a custom ROM then that totally blows your argument of 'It takes ages for latest Android Sense ROMS' then, FroYo ones like Leedroid appeared in no time after it was released. :p

I was using roms without sense so they came faster as they were ported over too the Desire from the nexus one, anyway the op has made his mind up so no more discussion needed on phone choices for him :).

I think in a year or so (provided I can get this SF) I will get HTC's latest and greatest, if I get on with this SF.

Is Android basically an iOS clone? i.e. it does the same cool stuff and layout that I saw on my mates iphone last night.

Android has widgets, so it can do stuff even cooler. Look through the phone desktop thread, the majority of those are android shots.

It depends what you want. While Android can be immensely powerful and you can make it look stunning, it will require some fiddling and messing about with to get it how you want. iOS won't. It will be simple, effective, easy to use, and things like custom roms arn't even in the picture

For the very fact that I now use my phone a lot like a phone rather than a proper gadget, my next phone will be WP7 or a Blackberry. I don't need the fuss that android comes with to make it brilliant.

You don't need to fiddle with android though, what fiddling do you have to do with a HTC phone running sense?

I don't get why people say this, it's a high end product and is actually similar price to android phones

Iphone 4g 8Gb sim free £419
Samsung Galaxy S 8GB £ 414

Although you can usually find deals on androids, as to which is better as someone said, it's personal preference and slightly different uses.

Just to add my two cents.

My contract works out at £12.50 a month for 200 (might be 300) minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb data with a free Samsung Galaxy S, IPhones didn't come within £20 a month of this with a free phone?

Would I get an IPhone if it cost the same as my Samsung? Maybe, would I pay an extra £22.50 a month for one? Never.
