Fallout: New Vegas

To all those discussing the Legdeathclaw on my second playthrough he spawned in the damn quarry where the alpha male & female deathclaws were which sort of turned a onesided long range pick off into a massacre for all involved t'was insane I'd just picked up my Q38-Matter Rifle and decided right time to sort out those deathclaws in the quarry.

So snuck into the quarry taking out any deathclaws that happened to enter my sites one by one found myself a nice sniping point up on the left side as you enter and fired at the alpha male. lo and behold from round the corner runs the female as I continue to pick off said alpha male.

Suddenly from out of nowhere the Leg DC attacks me from the right knocking me off my nicely found sniping spot and into the sights of the male & female!

Many shots were fired, All my explosives were detonated, both companions were killed & all my limbs became crippled except my right arm which was practially holding on by a thread but I'd taken all three down took all my dr's bags and all but 3 stimpacks out of about 40 odd fortunaltly I'd saved all my food to sort out my HP and spent the next few minuites heading to each vendor with medical supplies to restock. Laughed my head off when I got to the dead wind caverns as all the baby deathclaws that were supposed to be following alpha female were there in place of the Leg deathclaw:p

So now loads of you have been playing this for a while, how does it compare to FO3? I've been holding back on buying this because it just doesn't look as good to me. Haven't seen anything as awesome as Liberty Prime in clips I've seen so far :p

There was however a box that I couldn't open...required 100 lockpick, I have 31 :p. Not sure what's in it. I will go back and find out when or if I ever get to 100 lockpick. I doubt I will since levelling will stop improving well before that point (unless I patch it).
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_34

There is a Pulse Gun in the container and you can get the key from Nellis AFB wherever that is :p

Vault 34 tip, wear the spacesuit and helmet found in the power station.
Cuts rads in half.

Yeah, I got through it all, but I had to go and get fixed up at the clinic for radiation half way through, despite having a space suit

Maybe I was slow :p. (PS I had the helmet also).

Yeah I picked up the All-American but haven't killed anything yet as I've been crippled by radiation and still have to get out of the Vault without dying :D.

Does anyone else feel a bit lost from time to time?

SPOILERs - probably.

I've avoided the main quests for as long as possible and equipped with a printed off map of everything of interest, I've largely been walking from left to right and back again discovering places and doing the quests as I've gone along. I do feel though that sometimes I don't have a purpose other than the main quest and I don't want to progress that incase I miss a quest elsewhere.

I'm currently on a ridge above (Sloan, is it?) picking off the Deathclaws with my ratslayer. Taking its time as you can imagine. I've got the tesla gun but no ammo. Just seen the ghouls off into the sky. NCR think I'm OK as do good springs. Powerder Gangers don't like me and Legion attack me unless I'm wearing their armour - their leaders armor is the toughest I have but I forget to take it off and get attack by friends :) I'm a smidgen off Lvl14.

If I'm honest FO3 was more involving.

It's good, but overall I liked fo3 more.

New vegas has a much better main quest, and the faction system is a nice new addition as well. You have seperate reputations with all the various groups depending on your actions towards them. The karma system is still there, but has taken a bit of a back seat to the repuation system.

Generally it's a bit more "realistic". There's less of the wacky stuff like Ant-themed super-heroes, child-only colonies and spaceships full of aliens. Fans of the first 2 games like this: personally I liked the sillyness in fo3. Nothing really as awesome as liberty prime. I don't think as much imagination went into this one as fo3.

It's not quite as good for exploring/dungeon diving. Many of the "dungeons" are small and limited to a single loading zone. It doesn't really have anything to compare to the extensive DC sewer/subway systems. There's less loot as well I think, skill books are much rarer and the bobbleheads are gone. A lot of the areas and quests don't feel like they've had the same love put into them as in fo3.

The barter system is much better though. Stuff that should be expensive is. No more selling unique weapons for a measly 100 caps.

The weapons are better. They've improved the melee combat so it feels more like oblivion, and generally the guns feel much nicer: same level as the nicest mods for fo3. The character building aspects have been balanced better as well, so it's harder to make completely overpowered characters.

I guess it depends on what you liked about fo3. If you liked doing the main quest and shaping the future of the wasteland, then you'll probably think new vegas is the better game. If you're into dungeon diving and doing random fun quests just for the fun of them, then fo3 is better.

Is it normal for weapons to default to standard ammo when selected?
If I select .308, Hollow Point for my gun and switch to a different one with a hotkey and then back, why does it use the default .308 ammo instead?

Doesn't happen to me

If I had HP / AP rounds selected, then that's what appears when I switch back (via 1-8 hotkeys). I agree, that would be annoying!

I personally feel new Vegas is a mile better. It improves on so many aspects of Fallout 3.

Some little things, like iron sights and gun modding make things more fun.

Some big things, like a better central area (New Vegas) give the whole thing more meaning.

<Potential Spoilers>

Personally though, I feel like they one-side the game way too much. An option to run New Vegas & Hoover Dam myself would have been awesome for evil characters. Instead you're essentially forced to side with factions. (I realise you can do things yourself, but you don't do anything yourself, you take over, then relinquish all power to a robot!)

Cheers.. I'm much more of a story kind of player so will buy it tonight then :) I've been a bit lost since finishing DA:O.

Thanks for the response. l I'll give it a go!

I have to agree that New Vegas is better overall.

- Better main storyline (more varied, more freedom in the path you take)
- Faction-based reputation is better than just a "global karma"
- Dialogue is more realistic and 'grittier'
- More content overall (more locations and quests)
- Far less reliance on sewers to get around
- Weapon and armour values are a lot more appropriate

On the down side, the radio just isn't as good :( Mr New Vegas is no Three Dawg, that's for sure... and the selection of music is not nearly as good.

Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the "caverns" that are littered around. There are maybe 15 or so locations that are "cavern" type areas. These are generally pretty fun, but they're also highly formulaic. You enter, you clear out the cavern of whatever critters are living there (ranging from the very easy - coyotes or geckos), up to the damn difficult (cazadores and deathclaws), and when you're done you get some loot - usually in a box, sack, or attached to some poor dead geezer.

BTW you all know the first doc who wakes you up is Col Saul Tigh from BSG?
Hows that for frakking amazing

Yeah... I could tell instantly :)

Also: Mr House is Rene Auberjonois (Odo from Star Trek Deep Space 9)

Marcus (super mutant leader of Jacobstown) is Michael Dorn (Worf from Star Trek TNG and DS9)

Arcade Gannon is Zachary Levi (Chuck from Chuck)

Caesar is John Doman (Rawls from The Wire).

... There may be others, but they are the ones I recognised :)

Matthew Perry(Chandler) is the voice Benny I took great pleasure in depriving him of his life!

& Had I known that Odo was Mr. House I'd've let him live ah well...

Ah! If I'd known that then I would have probably killed him earlier :p

I guess I never watched enough episodes of Friends to make the connection. Luckily I was spared that torment in my younger years :p

I really hope the patch fixes 'Render unto Caesar' for me, it's not triggering at all and I'm stuck without it.
