New car purchased....

You think him spending £3k on something he doesn't want (a 12 year old Focus, no less!) is a better idea than him spending £4.75k on something he does want?

If he had changed from a MK4 Golf, no one would have batted an eye-lid, but as it was an S3 then it would seem people are offended by this apparent downgrade. In terms of fun - these C2s aren't bad and I'd much rather be driving these down some B-roads than an ageing S3. Sure, they are no Saxo/106, but they are still fun, chuckable little cars in the grand scheme of things.

This S3 was clearly a money pit, and I don't think this change needs to be criticised.

A 12 year old Focus for 3k.. are you smoking something? I looked at a 2004 (that's 6 years for the mathematically challenged) 1.8 Edge with 6 Ford stamps and 20k on the clock for £3200, I made an offer of £2800 and waiting for the bloke to call me and hopefully take me up on it. Anyway it was a suggestion, rather than posting a facepalm.

Not that I agree with Janesy but how would a 3k Focus be 12 years old?

The MK1 Focus is ~12 years old - I speak of the model, not a specific car.

Of course it does... he went from a good car, albeit a moneypit to an incredibly bad one. He could have went to something good, or as good as an S3 which doesn't cost as much to run!!

Like what?

The OP reminisces over his old 106 GTi, and wants something more reliable than his S3, and the first thing that comes to your mind is a MK1 Focus?

I mean, sure, as a generic car, the Focus is a brilliant car that offers some poise to an otherwise dull driving experience, but it isn't a hot hatch and certainly not even close to the 106 GTi.

It doesn't help that I currently drive a total of 2 miles to work every day and the temp gauge barely even starts to move by the time I get to work, that can't be good for the engine or turbo!

legs? :p

was about to suggest a 172 or 182, but somebody already beat me to it! mine cost £2k and it would eat a c2 vts for dinner!

No, the better car for the brief would have been the Focus in terms of reliability and cost price. I may also add the C2 is not a 'hot hatch'.

i think both the vts + clio are good looking cars, personal preference at the end of the day, but again like someone else said, c2 is hardly a hot hatch, by modern day standards!

Oh yes, I forgot - a car has to be fast* to be a hot hatch? I must have forgotten that a car can lose its hot hatch status, too?

(*not that 7.5-8 seconds to 60 is exactly slow in terms of hot hatches between 1996 and 2004).
