About to buy a SSD - Help...

it was set to automatic delayed start. I've now set it to automatic.

One other thing Ive just noticed my cpu is at 12% usage yet the PC is idle, never had this before.

Any ideas?

RoEy

Rebooted and in services it now says automatic but still getting error message saying rst service is not running. Plus my cpu usage is going from 7-12% constantly, even after a reboot. something is not right. I put the windows updates on after I installed RST, that shouldnt cause any issues should it?

DOH! Solved it!

I put my Overclock back on and ofcourse that was running in IDE. Now back on AHCI.

It won't have done anything to the ssd would it running in IDE?

RoEy

No, it's fine. Enjoy your SSD. :)

Cheers Dragon. Will do!

With regard to the defrag thing how do you set a schedule for other HDD's its like all or nothing when Ive looked at it. How do I know TRIM is working?

RoEy

Start -> "disk defragmenter" -> Configure schedule -> Select disks...

start -> "cmd" -> "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" (0 = TRIM, 1 = no TRIM)

TRIM is on, nice one thanks.

When setting up schedule for defrag under select disks it says select all disks and data (d) hdd but I can't see my C drive in that section.

I have to select all disks otherwise it wont let me click apply. Is that right>

One other thing, in the power settings it says turn hard diks off after 20 mins if not used, I normally always set that to never, is that ok to do for SSD? I never have my PC go to sleep, hibernate etc...

I'm glad its you asking all these noob questions about the OCZ Vertex 2, as I'm just about to click buy on one and am pretty much in the same position as yourself, noobwise ;)

LMAO! Superb! I really don't give a damn. I know sod all about SSDs so the only way I'm going to learn is by asking. Go for it mate, hopefully I've opened the flood gates for you. We can't know 'everything' now can we?

Anyway, buy it. It really is awesome and by far the best upgrade I've ever made to my PC.

Well if it isn't in the list then I guess Windows 7 has removed it after detecting it's an SSD. So leave auto-defrag on for your D: drive and maybe check it after the first scheduled run to make sure your C: drive hasn't been defragmented.

Set it to never sleep so it can perform garbage collection when your PC is idle.

One last thing, should I disabled superfech, pagefile, drive caching etc...?

RoEy

If you run the Windows Experience Index then Superfetch will automatically be disabled, I read on the ocz forums that Drive Caching should be left on but I'm not totally sure what to do with the pagefile, I've set mine to 2GB and it seems ok.

Leave drive caching & page file alone.

Really, SSDs do not require as much tweaking as they once did. Aside from defragging, which is *usually* disabled automatically anyway, you really don't have to do much.

I'll post back here once I have it up and running mate. Hope yours turn up too!

RoEy

Glad you've got everything sorted, this thread is going to be very useful for me so thanks! I had to pick the drives up from the depot (50km on my bike!), and then realised I'd forgotten extra SATA cables. They're now stuck with DPD until after Christmas. What a mess... :(

This thread is of great help to me, Ordered a OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB Yesterday from OcUK using free DPD next day delivery, No delivery yet, checked tracking and it says " Your parcel has been received at our sortation hub" So i guess i won't be getting it before the weekend :(

Can you call DPD without a delivery Card and ask if you can collect it?

I to am a complete noob when it comes to SSD so this thread will come in handy :)
