Flu, how many of you have actually had it?

If you had flu you wouldn't be able to post on a forum.

I'd agree with that. I had flu in the middle of this year and it's horrific. I could barely open my eyes let alone sit in front of a monitor, the natural light of the room was too much to bear, I couldn't watch TV or even listen to it, I couldn't sleep because the fever which went with it was too uncomfortable so you're pretty much just led there in a state of semi consciousness, with your eyes shut unable to really do anything. Or at least that's how I was. I also had glandular fever back last year and that was ****ing horrible.

I think I've had it once or twice. I've had glandular fever, and I'd rather have the flu any day of the week :).

Edit: As above, same as Killswitch.. it's horrific.

If you really had 'The Flu' you wouldn't be posting on an internet forum.

OK, this is just getting silly now :p

Sorry, but it's quite clear that nobody here offering such advice knows what they are talking about. Flu comes in variety of strains and subtypes, some will kill individuals within a day, others will leave people immobile, other are notably milder and a person will still certainly have mobility of sorts.

Yes, it is true that many people moan they have the flu when they really have a cold. However it's also true that the flu doesn't always leave someone totally incapacitated. The recent swine flu outbreak is a good example of a highly contagious yet relatively mild flu.

I wouldn't mind so much if people weren't frequently implying the OP is making a mountain out of a molehill - next you'll all be saying that the guy in the train accident has suffered from a sprain, wimp :p

I've been with my woman for 36 years and I've never known her to be properly ill until last year when she got the mild swine flu and it put her in bed for 5 days.
She was that weak from the mild swine flu that she couldn't even turn the TV on.
If she'd got proper flu she would have been worse.
I reckon 99% of people who claim to have flu have actually got a cold.

Different people will have different tolerances to different strains of flu. I was totally imobilised for period when I believe I had swine flu, but I was able to move about at other times. Likewise, I know that my two cousins were diagnosed with swine flu and one was totally exhauted for a week, whilst the other merely felt nautious for three days with milder syptoms than the other. Outside of my first hand experience, I believe I've studied Influenza A enough to talk about it pretty confidently.

I do however think you are right with your 99% comment :)

I have loads of times. Worst about it is when you feel so tired and need sleep but you can't because your body is aching and wakes you up right away :(

Longest period of time I had it was about 2 1/2 weeks. When I think about it now I probably should have been checked at the hospital as I have never felt so bad. Was constantly sneezing which made my nose bleed every single time! Didn't eat much, was forced to have some water and spaghetti at some point. Spent the whole time either sleeping or falling asleep. Couldn't even watch the beginning of a film before passing out again. My chest then was so sore from all the coughing I could barely speak properly. It happened while I was visiting my cousin and my aunt kept going on about how it was so boring for my cousin and I should just get out and get better  Oh yea, poor her being bored etc.

Ugh.

Dont think I have ever had the flu. Kinda bad for getting colds but never the flu if its as bad as people make out.

I had a mild bout of flu a few years ago. Two days of crawling on the floor because I couldn't manage the stairs standing up. I say it was mild because I was only that bad for 2 days and I could walk on the flat if I was careful and used a wall for help. It hurt and made me dizzy, but I could do it. If I hadn't needed to get water and use the toilet, I would have just stayed in bed all the time rather than nearly all the time.

Flu isn't really much like a cold at all. If you get flu, you won't be unsure about it. I've had colds - they're annoying and inconvenient. When I had flu, I was much too ill to feel either annoyed or inconvenienced.

Don't think I've ever had proper flu but I think I'm coming down with it.

Youngest son has been to the doctors this morning and he's got the flu :( He came in from school yesterday afternoon and fell asleep on the living room floor at around 4pm and didn't stir until I woke him just before 8 this morning!
