As most of you know, at 120k the ZS needed a bit of work, namely a cracked head caused by insufficient antifreeze in last year's big freeze.

While I'm in there, it's also getting a few other bits and pieces - at 120k the cambelt tensioner and idler are rumbling a little, and also the water pump is due for a change.

I may get a hybrid turbo built for the car, this will depend on funds once the other work is done and it's ready to put back together.

The car is a 2003 MG ZS TD, was previously running at about 150bhp before it was taken off the road.

I've already been called stupid for owning the car, keeping the car etc, at the end of the day I do like the car a lot, although ideally I'd of course have a V6 variant. Nevertheless, with an Integra chassis and Lotus engineered suspension, it's quite fun for a daily diesel hack.

Right, time to finally get started. I've been putting it off for long enough.

I had a head which was taken from my mates knackered 620SLDi, but predictably the valve seats have been destroyed by bits of piston flying round when he melted 2 of them.

Cleaning up the head, to test:

Turns out it doesn't hold liquid when tested, and promptly dumped lovely black sooty water all over my clean floor! :broon:

Anyway...
...Scrapyard trip ahoy!

Went to a great breaker's yard yesterday, armed with 2 toolboxes, a pry bar and a breaker bar.

Found a nice 420SDi to attack, so removal starts...

A few hours later, I got it off! Helluva job

Tonight I'll be cleaning it up, and then work will start removing the head on the ZS, ready to swap.

Indeed they are, I was quite interested to learn that too.

Cheers for the comments, work will carry on once this rain has gone. Last year I changed a clutch in the snow, I'm certainly not doing anything like that again! :p

I'm really not sure the integra DC2 chasis has similarity with the 5 door civic that the MG shares its chasis with, the DC2 and EG civic were the ones that were similar but feel free to educate me

sauce for integra comment?

this thread will now descend down this path now instead of your car plans i hope you realise!

The chassis used for integra and the ek9 etc, have extra seem welding and strengthening added as well as a few choice braces underside.

Oh, these pics bring back nostalga :). Back when a time when BMW eventually took over Rover then later ditched it, when the stupid "buy British" Rover admirers hated and blamed BMW when in fact they should have been looking closer to home at the idiots who got Rover into the situation they found themselves in (ie, ROver management and it's other employees).

Today, we should all thank god BMW made something of the Mini! And the better ROvers (ie, the Landy's) still live on in more of a niche market. However, some people would still rather not buy anything British made when it comes to cars. I'm one of them although I do have a liking for the Landy Defender

Good luck in fixing up your shed, I mean ZS :D

There are differences in wheelbase etc. but the main suspension components are pretty much the same apart from Spring/ARB/damper rates. All use the same design of double wishbone front and multi-link rear.

If you can tell that from that pic then you should be a PI!

The majority of yards now have a concrete style floor.

The alternative yards it could potentially be are in Bury as these just have clay/soil still, but last time I was there I didn't see a tracked grabber/crane in use which would produce tracks like in the picture!

Been a while since I have been mind, but I went quite frequently 3-4 years ago round the yards on a Saturday morning, picking up bargains etc!

More recently I was after a set of 406 Coupe front calipers, but most wanted stupid prices, no more toolbox bargain prices!

Troll much?

BMW didn't even make anything of the land rover. They bought it, used it's tech and sold it to ford. BMW sold it because they said that it "felt that the Land Rover range would clash with its own new range of all wheel drive vehicles"

Only in my spare time ::cool:
Might be true but not sure a company such as BMW would really find any benefit in Landrover technology. Maybe shaved a little of their R&D time for 4wd system, but then again BMW have used 4wd before (such as the 1980's BMW 325iX).
I don't think BMW really markets at the same segment as Landrover. THere's no defender competitor and the BMW X range I don't think have ever been marketed as off-roaders.

Update!

The new head is in good nick, but the valves did leak a little.

After a little clean:

However, as it wasn't holding compression, it needed to be stripped down to find the cause of the problem.

At the moment it looks like this:

Going to take all the valves out, check them for burning or damaged seats, and work as necessary. Hopefully a quick lapping session will sort them out! :)

Begun accumulating parts, using the kitchen as Base Camp as you can see. The missus is not impressed! :p

Seems like a lot of work on an old Rover but hey if it keeps you happy then fair play to you.

As for the chassis being the same as the DC2, maybe very loosely based on it, even our DC2 Integra Si is very different to the Type R, the ARB's would not fit with out modification.

Good luck to you, Rover maniac :)

IIRC this car is based on the Rover 45 which was based on the Honda Domani which was based on the EG Civic, so its def a distant relation of the Civic but im unsure where the DC2 factors in?
