As pointed out, is internet porn really that big an issue compared to everything else that they are exposed to?

In my opinion, probably not. That's why there's little or no evidence to suggest that occasional exposure to Internet pornography damages children. The only example they could come up with was ridiculously extreme, citing murder as a possible consequence of Internet pornography because two kids who had a 'toxic' home life including exposure to pornography attacked some other kids. Totally, utterly, ludicrous inference.

I suspect occasional exposure to pornography would provoke curiosity amongst the majority of stable children, and only those from unstable backgrounds would be so negatively affected. On that basis, if we are going to initially filter Internet pornography for them, we should better block all pornography and anything else remotely edgy on every single delivery medium.

Technically, I can only see them being able to block 2/3 of porn sites at best. This will inevitably block safe content too. I remember when the global SurfControl (now part of Websense) database blocked the BBC's teletubby website for being porn.

websites such as 4chan will be affected.

I can see the anon group getting very angry if this does happen.

I don't see a problem, if you're not mature enough to phone your isp and ask for porn to be unblocked you're probably not mature enough to look at it.

If I remember rightly you do have to be 18 in this country to purchase porn.

The bigger question, and it's a technical one, is how effective it would be. I'm guessing not very but would frustrate casual viewing.

I've seen things on easily accessible streaming sites which I don't think anyone should see, I'd certainly not encourage young people to see it at an age when it could form habits and behaviours for the rest of their life.

And what kind of habits are these? Blocking children from having sexual thoughts? From going out and having sex with people under 16? Access to porn makes no difference to these whatsoever.
