The "More money than sense" test

Very much doubt it, i was a pretty late adopter of i7. Ill probably just upgrade the gpus at some stage.

As far as intel is concerned the tri-mem I7s sit above sandy bridge.

In memory benchmarks and PCIe bandwidth - absolutely. However (apart from the Gulftowns) current i7s will be slower than the sandy bridge i7s in most perfomance metrics and the K series SB i7 looks like it will be an overclocking beast.

Still on a E7400 for everyday use, that with an SSD is plenty fast enough for me for web browsing, office & DTP which are my main uses these days.

Gaming rig on the other hand is another matter, though I'm in no rush to buy the new bits for that yet. I will wait & see for prices on SB CPU's/boards/RAM & looking at getting a new GC to go with that too. Probably go AMD 68/6950 or GTX460/470/570, not decided yet.

I bet loads of people who own current gen overclocked chips & have posted here saying they wont upgrade will soon change their tune when they read about what sort of performance people are getting out of them!

I would if I could afford it..

well I went from 478 p4 > 775 c2d > 1366 i7 so I think I'm going to wait until there is at least 8 cores minimum in the cpu + a different architecture before I upgrade :P (see the pattern here lol)

edit: having said that and now thinking about it -- I went a bit nuts on the gfx cards at the time so I might wait until 1 gfx card is on par or better than quad sli 295s before I consider upgrading ;)

If somehow SB is some kind of revelation that's twice as fast as an i7 at 4GHz and feels it, then sure.

As it won't be, no. :p

Well, I went from a 2.8 P4 @3.2 up to an i3 540 @4.2... and the difference was astounding ;) Plus from an AGP Sapphire X1950 to HIS 5770 :P

q6600 here, considering upgrading to i7-950. Though im not sure if i would notice that much difference.

At this point you may as well wait and see what SB and Bulldozer (if it comes out earlier next year) bring - your Q6600 won't become obsolete overnight... Certainly not with the current gen of console ports...
