*** The Official ATI Radeon HD 6970 & 6950 Reviews, Discussion and Overclocking Thread ***

ive decided to leave amds offerings well alone
from what ive seen and read on various review sites, what on earth were amd thinking ?
noise, heat, performance, huge huge let down imo

Hi, new to the forums, registered here becausce im wandering if anybody else here can get stable card with over 900 core? I have an XFX HD 6970. Im running memory at 1450 'max' cc will allow, but get lock ups and errors with anything over 900 core? I have tried using afterbuner and am setting power to +20%.

I am getting great performance with this card at 900/1450, but read that most can achieve 950/1450 stock easily, mine doesn't want to do this lol.

Hi there crysis.
I think its absolute fallacy to believe that every 6970 will achieve 950/1450 easily...

Most ppl achieve 950mhz.....by
A) running 100% fan to keep the card as cool as possible.
B) water
C) Open test benches

Lets see what Wizzard has to say:-

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_6970/32.html

"The overclocks of our card are 915 MHz core (4% overclock) and 1445 MHz Memory (5% overclock). Both overclocks are less than impressive, especially from the memory chips I expected more which are specified to run at up to 1500 MHz."

Up your fan speed and try again.

REally? What were you expecting? just curious? I am very happy with the AMD offerings this time round. Much happier than I was with the 5870/5850. Amazing price/performance ratio. I was so impressed with the cards that I switched from buying a 570 to getting a 6950 instead.

Noise and Heat haven't been an issue so far. Both Nvidia and AMD are now around the same for noise and heat. Really with mid to high end stuff, if you want silent and cool you would need to consider water cooling.

Did you read the hardocp review?

Is that why Kyle runs Dual GTX580 in SLI then?!

I am slightly confused as to how a positive review for the HD6970 showing real gaming performance automatically means HardOCP are biased towards AMD?

Looking at it this way, the HD 6970 blows the GTX 570 out of the water for a few bucks.

^^ Says it all, every other review points out the 6970 is on par with a 570, yes even ones that do fraps runs to get results, but according to OCP it blows the 570 out of the water lol, not seem biased to you? and what has him running 580 SLI got to do with anything, I would as well when you get the hardware for free.

I think the 6950s are great cards personally, heat isnt an issue and neither is noise and i run them xfire. When the cards are idling or in desktop you can hardly hear them, when in games running at 95%+ on both cores for prolonged periods you dont even notice the noise, unless your quietly playing chess or something (with Crysis/Metro2033 graphics :D ). When playing Crysis, Stalker, WoW or MW2 etc, when do ever notice the fan noise anyway over game sounds/music ? :P

Got my xfx card installed today:

The only accessory you get is a crossfire connector, no additional cables or dongles or anything else. Oh and a do not disturb door handle card.

Cute Backplate. :p

can you honestly say that the noise isnt an issue ?

Based on the results of their own review the HD6970 does "blow the GTX570 out of the water". Whether the review is correct or not depends on how the results can be interpreted. They are not wrong (as the FPS is literally what was achieved) but "could" be constructed in such a way to favour one card over the other. Unfortunately this is pure conjecture.

The point about the GTX580's is a perfectly valid one. For a site that is supposedly biased towards AMD doesn't it strike you as slightly odd that the owner runs two Nvidia cards? He would get the HD69xx free as well so why isn't he running them if they are so biased?

One quote on the site is not enough to start calling them biased especially when that quote is putting into words what the results showed.
