£5k to 6k practical hatch

Point re-enforced. It's all about the badge for DiamondMark. He's a badge-snob. It's fine to drive a Bentley, Porsche or Maserati, but if you can't afford one, it's no reason to **** off a perfectly good car just because 30 years ago they built slightly less good ones.

Brand image is an important thing though.

Lanica could build the best car in the world tomorrow but loads of people would pass on it because they think it'd rust to pieces like the ones a couple of years ago.

Alfa Romeo have been making decent cars for a while but recommend one to someone who doesn't know a lot about cars and they'll dismiss it as unreliable

It takes a lot more cars to rebuild a manufactures reputation and image than it takes it ruin it.

Also ask yourself what sort of market do Skoda aim for really?

Audi - Way More money than sense
VW - Slightly more money than sense
Seat - Younger people with more credit than sense
Skoda - For the cheap people who you see in supermarkets redeeming money off vouchers :D.

dont make mne get my money off coupomns dont think i aint got nonme

Having them isn't the problem, holding up everyone in the supermarket is.

£200+ bill at tesco, massive queue behind us and my mum is worried about getting £3.50 off :p

This thread has gone really off topic:D

Belgium uses the most coupons per capita than anywhere else in europe.
Every week I get sent hundreds in the post from the supermarkets.

Nowt wrong with walking around the shop, coupon in hand, looking for that elusive waffle :p

That's a bit of a trek from your way isn't it?

Have them finished the building work yet? Last time I was there they were doing something with the car park?

Brand image is very interesting. The OP likes Vauxhalls. Personally, I'm not that keen. I remember Vauxhall Vivas and Crestas and Chevettes. They were horrible. Fords? Dagenham Dustbins was what they used to be called. Rover (British Leyland) have quite rightly died out. These cars were all, by and large, appalling junk that forced people to buy Japanese. Peugeot, Citreon and Renault are all very well, but they seem to be made from paper and string and they do fall apart.

The reason FIAT and VAG now own all the classic italian brands is that they were all carp and died on their backsides.

When Vickers eventually sold off Rolls Royce and Bentley they were little more than other manufacturers parts-bin specials with an engine that was out of the ark.

Audi didn't exist until about 1965 and even then they were actually making NSUs and Beetles at Ingolstadt. Audi, SAAB and Volvo were all horrid little cars until they discovered quattro, turbos and seatbelts respectively.

BMW kicked off building Austin kit-cars and Mercs were always Adolf Hitler's favourite although you'd have to say they always made a good car.

The fact is that we are all victims of advertising. I just happen to like being a happy driver;)

And yes, if there is a coupon or a voucher or a discount code, I'll use it. Nothing to be embarrassed about there. I don't know anyone who has so much money they don't want a good deal.

Hi guys,

Been looking recently for a car for my girl friend. Price range in title. We have been looking so far at astra's and found a few good ones for 5.5k. That is 1.6 2005/6 models 40 to 60k miles.

With the budget in mind what would you guys be looking for? We have looked at the focus and don't like it. We would ideally like an astra sized car.

Thanks

OP - You are new around here so the best advice you will read in this thread is to ask your original question on another forum. A question such as yours is a pointless exercise here on the OcUK Motors forums.

After a few months you will realise why.

Citroen C2
Mini Cooper 1.6 (will be high mileage on a sub 04 plate... proper chicks car though)
VW Beetle
Pug 206
Alfa GTV (repair bills would be a few £ though)

Some alternatives. Flames away :D

Did you really just recommend a 206 as a £5-6k hatchback?

Well it seems to be a girl choosing so it will be up there in her top few choices.

Unfortunately......

Might try drunken posting later on today as yesterday was a quiet one :D

Indeed, because on here you'll ask for suggestions for £5k cars, get some decent suggestions for alternatives and suggestions for how to buy and then get a load of people posting 'omg he wants an astra y wont u let him buy one' for no apparent reason.

You like crap cars, we know. We get the message. Stop crusading against those trying to save others from the sort of motoring tedium you enjoy, its getting hugely boring.

Instead, give advice on the cars you know about and stop crying in threads about how nasty Motors is.

vauxhall's brand image has stayed poor because they (until the very recent ones which are "adequate") build woeful cars. Corsa B and C anyone? Vectra B and C? terrible vehicles which sold mainly due to very attractive finance packages, and offering free insurance to young drivers

skoda, and seat (anyone remember the "system porsche" ibiza?) have strengthened their brand image by stopping building woeful cars, because as everybody knows "it's basically a VW innit"
