As for the iPad, I was very dubious and as memyselfandi said would have much preferred a fully fledged tablet PC but having used one they're pretty nice.
Yes, crappy resistive tablets with 2 hour battery lifes and running Windows, which isn't exactly designed with a touchscreen interface in mind.
But it generally doesn't cost 3x, the only competitor of a similar quality is the Galaxy Tab which costs the same.
The Galaxy Tab is £399 for the 16GB 3G version, the equavalent iPad is £529, thats quite a bit more, about a third. You can't even get the cheapest non 3G iPad for £399.
