The 10 biggest tech 'fails' of 2010

I have been since June, easily the best phone I've owned :)

As for the iPad, I was very dubious and as memyselfandi said would have much preferred a fully fledged tablet PC but having used one they're pretty nice.

Yes, crappy resistive tablets with 2 hour battery lifes and running Windows, which isn't exactly designed with a touchscreen interface in mind.

But it generally doesn't cost 3x, the only competitor of a similar quality is the Galaxy Tab which costs the same.

The Galaxy Tab is £399 for the 16GB 3G version, the equavalent iPad is £529, thats quite a bit more, about a third. You can't even get the cheapest non 3G iPad for £399.

I don't deny that it does what it's meant to and works great for that. My issue is just for spending more on a device that does less than a netbook is capable of, albeit with a nicer looking interface and a touchscreen. Those things don't however, in my opinion, justify the higher price point. I can accept the price if the iPad did everything that a netbook could do and would admit that it's useful, but without that full functionality, it really doesn't make sense to me.

Because it does it slicker than a do everything laptop, because for a lot of things it's in a nicer format ie tablet, has no keyboard, has very little casing and is a screen. this makes it far easier to use than a laptop. And yes I've had a laptop and a crappy android tablet. If you don't use those extra features why have the downsides. They are designed for different markets and use. One is not a replacement for the other. Just like a lot of us have a desktop, laptop and media pc we will just add a tablet to that. The chances are then, that the laptop will only be used for work or if you do a lot of typing.

it's not expensive either both iphone 4 and the equivalent android phones are all around £400 so you get a bigger screen and a few other bits for an extra £50.

It bugged me that joey public passed the tablet PC as a completely "new" concept in 2010 with the Apple iPad. No it's not new in 2010! My old work was selling Paceblades as far back as 2003.

Like I keep saying, Form-factor, it annoys me that so many people ignore the importance of this in comparisons, I'll say it again, your paying for 'form factor' and 'ergonomics', not just a better UI, and don't forget better battery life which is so important in a device like this.

Come off it, tablet PC's cost a fortune, they were big and cumbersome and the battery life was crap, also they way we use the net has changed drastically in the last ten years.

Can get the 3G for £469, 17% more but for a larger screen, more expensive screen.

Yes, you can.

Oh right, well I just looked at the Apple website for prices. I didn't think other places really discounted Apple products?

Edit: I can't find a 3G one for near £469 anywhere? In fact I can't find one for under £500.

Yep, android is not tablet supported and never will be. It is ChromeOS that is aimed at tablets and is not released yet.

Actually that's incorrect. Honeycomb (Android 3.0) is designed specifically for tablets and has already been (very briefly) demonstrated. It will probably be released properly at CES this year.

As for the netbook/iPad debate.

Can you play facebook games through the browser on it yet (iPad)?*

Are netbooks still those slow plasticky pieces of carp?

yup, both rubbish IMO, funny that modern netbooks are closer to normal laptops than their Netbook predecessors (ie original eeepc), that's because they were rubbish... A decent ultraportable Laptop will trounce a netbook any day of the week, alongside a mobile OS tablet for most things...

EDIT: As for iOS, it may be slick but it's also the most soleless OS I have ever used. It's like beige paint, does the job but isn't going to make you go "Wow"!

certainly looked like you were comparing,
I'm not defensive, just pointing out, you compared 3g and memory and stuff but left out the screen.

I put the memory in to show I was comparing the cheapest Tab to the cheapest iPads, as the post before had said they were the same price.

In case my edit above is missed, I can't find a 3G iPad for anywhere near £469 - they all seem to be over £500. This always seems to be a common theme talking to Apple owners, the odd exaggeration one way for the competition, an exaggeration the other way for the Apple product. Put them together and you end up with big inaccuries and misinformation and if people didn't bother checking then it would be taken as gospel.

The iPad is a fantastic device. It's not supposed to replace a notebook but as a tool for instant internet browsing and email, that can sit on the coffee table looking smooth the rest of the time, it's great. (I know the iPhone does the same thing but the iPad's larger screen makes it easier, alright?)

Sorry what? They're meant to compete against NETbooks and they do the same thing except the iPad is restricted and limited compared to a netbook.

He didn't say they arent a competitor to NETbooks. He mentioned NOTEbooks.

Netbooks and notebooks are different in terms of what they are.

Probably gonna get flamed for this, but I reckon Google fail at the majority of things they do.

They've made all their money on search, which was obviously the best at the time, however they've even partly wrecked that this year with the stupid site preview and new image page.

It's kinda weird how such a wealthy company with so much talent can make such a mess of things

They remind me of that saying about too many fingers in to many pies, or jack of all trades master of none.

They really need to focus on what they are doing more intently.

Also on the Digg changes I find to be great, not sure why there has been so many haters, it looks modern and more socially minded. It certainly doesn't generate the 000's of diggs any more, and the system for websites themselves to submit their own stories kinda defeats the object of a social network where it is the users who do the digging. I have a feeling he (Kevin) was hoping to get a good buzz off the new revamp and hopefully sell it, but I think that boat has sailed.

What is the iPhone 4 doing at number one above the Kin? That makes no sense.

Oh and on the subject of Apple, what is it about threads in GD with Apple mentioned that causes all the anti-Apple vitriol to come out?

Seriously, nobody gets that upset when somebody mentions Sony or Acer...

My personal theory is that people either think it's cool to be anti-Apple(like it used to be "cool" to hate Microsoft) or they're just helots because they can't afford one.

On the subject of the OP. That list is lame. That's all.

I think a lot of it is to do with the mentality of some Apple fans (by no means all) as well. Just observe above where I correct a price and I get my throat jumped down. It's like they are defending their family or their religion or something. It really puts me off Apple forums as a Macbook Pro owner myself.

He wasn't jumping down your throat, he was making clear about the comparisons. Just because you decided to feel violated because someone pointed something out that you didn't notice yourself, doesn't make it an attack :p

It was the abruptness/rudeness of the post combined with the irrellevance to my post, I was correcting someone else. Why didn't he say anything when the original post was made? Because it was by an Apple owner? Or maybe because I corrected him about Android Honeycomb being tablet orientated. Who knows.
