The End Is In Sight For The PS3

It's not the ps3 I'm worried about tbh. It's more the nagging thought in my head that Sony may decide a future console is too much of a risk.

Where do you all get these MKV movies anyway? I'm willing to bet most are downloaded. Which is one of the main reasons It isn't supported by Sony at the moment.

Why is MKV playback so high on everyone's list? Can't you just use MKV2VOB and play your files in a MPG container instead?

I do but did you ever use Xbmc?

A media centre with the capabilities of that programme would be exactly what the PS3 needs.

They added DivX and XviD support where does that come from?

They need to join forces with Microsoft and just agree upon a universal standard. ;) It would be far easier for the devs to develop for PC and one console (sod Nintendo).

I'm not sure we would see the best of both companies.. More like a pay to play service with annoying to code for structure lol.

No mkv2vob can be time consuming doesn't always work and subtitles are often a pain.

My question though would be who found these new keys? How haven't they been found in the last 3 years? Were people just not looking for them?

I encode all my own DVDs and Blu-rays as x264 in a MKV container. MKV is far more flexible than all the other containers - it's lack of native support by a lot of players is its only downside. Doesn't bother me, as I use XBMC.

Xbox Media Centre? I've heard of it but never owned an Xbox so have never seen it in action nor do I know of its capabilities.
It may have started on the Xbox, and hence the name, but rather ironically there isn't even a version available that works on the xbox any more.

I will buy a second PS3 if XBMC/Boxee comes to fruition. No need to pirate games though, I already buy them for the main PS3. Just want a full on Media Centre.

And where do the movies that are downloaded come from ? They dont just magically appear on the net - somebody, somewhere encodes them. The net has nothing to do with it.

Fantastic news! Fingers crossed that xbmc is ported over, along with mkv capabilities :)

eh? I don't understand your point,

Yes someone encodes the movie then a few thousand people download said movie over torrents or the like, then **** and moan about it not working on the ps3. Now they will work on the ps3.

Last thing sony want is people illegally downloading HD movies and playing them on sony created hardware.

What? The PS1 and PS2 both had big levels of piracy and it didn't stop them making the PS3.

The PS3 was the biggest risk they took and piracy was nothing to do with it!

I think the point was you are assuming that if you have a movie in a mkv container then you're automatically a pirate.

It's perfectly possible you want to encode your own blu-rays and DVDs to watch on a media center at will without the hassle of fiddling with discs. And mkv is probably the best container out there for this at the moment - save for it's somewhat more limited support than older containers.

If Sony doesn't support mkv for piracy reasons, then why do they bother supporting others like avi and mp4? You can easily get your pirated wares in a supported format if you wanted.

It does make me laugh that people will think this will end Sony.

This is a very niche hobby and not a lot of people will catch wind of it or even care.

Games will still be bought and played. And the PS4 will come, with restricted hardware and will be hacked again.

its really very interesting, this whole debacle, and highlights that the hardware is secure, just the people utilising it who are not (for not implementing unique codes for each part of the equation).

I think it will damage them, for example look at the DS. I'd say more than half the people i know with them use flash carts - even non tech savvy people. With the 360 its not a very simple workaround, and you void the waranty (pretty much) but in theory this could be as simple as plugging a USB stick in, running an update and having a hacked system. HDDs full of ISOs will appear on markets, in pubs, on ebay etc and people WILL take advantage, not everyone, but more than with the 360.

I think the result will be that Sony release PS4 earlier, and fix the mistakes it has made on PS3.
