After the infamous LOLclio thread im back again for another motor related thread.

Now, what is it with insurance prices today!

51 plate Alfa 147 1.6 twin spark in red = 3600
15 year old fiesta 1.25 in blue = 3245
Focus 1.6 zetec in red = 2850

All TPFT

What the hell, im 21 years old and im a mechanical engineer, i thought that insurance would maybe be a little lower.

The alfa has an alarm and immob just like the focus and i put that they would do 6k a year travel and be stored in a garage.

I just cant see a way of insuring a car and if im honest, i dont want to insure a car at that price.

Its just beyond me how they charge so much!

Ive tried so many sites to get a decent price but its looking like im going to have to save up around 3500 just so that i can drive.

Roughly 1500-2k on a car and the rest on the insurance just to bring down the monthly payments.

Anyone else struggling with cheap quotes at the mo?

Cheers,

James.

Do I go there with the mechanical engineer thing? Or should I just go to bed?

Do it, you wont sleep if you dont :p

Plus it is Bradford ...

Though I fail to see how a mechanical engineer is a higher risk profession, surely it must be lower risk due to the fact that the person actually understands machines

The insurer deems your age, experience and profession as a risk that equates the cost of insuring you to drive at around £1500.

That is your explanation.

It just seems a bit steep to me, its like they're encouraging people not to drive..

Exactly my point..

TPF&T has always been more expensive for me.
Change your post code.
Add parents.
Try a car not known for being driven by young people (Mondeo 2.0 cheaper to insure for me than a Fiesta 1.4 when I was 17)
etc...

Why does being a 'mechanical engineer' make you less likely to crash than someone who works in Boots?

I'm 21, drive a 180bhp nippy modded hatchback - I paid £425 this year fully comp.

What happened to the Clio then?

Ive cancelled the agreement on the clio

Ive added parents, i can only add my mum with 5ync and it makes it more expensive, i cant change the postcode as you need to put where you live.

& TPFT is cheaper for me.

This. When I started an apprenticeship, we had a talk from road safety guys. They said from each year of apprentices, there will be at least one person killed in an RTA. We called BS. They were right. Two guys later died in separate incidents.

At 21, it's possible to have a degree in mechanical engineering? If you don't, that is what fox is getting at.

Without digging too much and turning this into a flame thread - what made you decide to cancel the Clio agreement and how easy was it (how much did you get screwed and did you just give the car back)?

Post code you can't change no, but your post code might be a high risk one. Janesy on here can't insurance anything decent cause of his post code, mine I can grab pretty much anything apart from exotica and LHD for under £1k per year now. I'm simply saying that might be why your getting high prices.

Tried SwiftCover? They've been brilliant for me?

He isnt a mechanical engineer, he's part way through a diploma in 'mechanical engineering' at a college. This makes him a student, which is a higher risk occupation than a mechanical engineer.

It'll be a good 5+ years before he's actually an engineer, in the same way as somebody doing biology A level isnt a Doctor.

For cheap insurance, try something like a 106 XND or similar? Cars dont get much cheaper to insure.

Very easy, theyll make more money off me this way.

In most agreements you have 2 cut off points, one at the third way stage and one half way through, im past the third way stage, if i were to end the aggreement now it would cost around 3k

If i were to end at the half way stage it wouldnt cost me a penny, but they have said if i send the car back now i can cancel the contract and pay them to the half way stage which is roughly 1500 pounds away.

Nuff said, royally shafted finance = loose :)

Save for the win!

I was looking at some alfa 147s tonight, now i coule get one for roughly 1500 in good nick and insurance would be anywhere between 3400 and 4k if i put 2k down on the insurance too it would make monthly repayments smaller.

Looks like ill take this route but all in all i need a car bu aug as i go onto shifts and there isnt a way to work without a motor so my savings will increase soon.

Well I assumed that when someone says they are 21 and a mechanical engineer it means they they have a BEng ...
