What is the point of SSD?

Once you go SSD you wont go back, only someone who's used one will know everyone else just thinks they're expensive

I'm planning on getting one for my gf's laptop as her current mechanical hard drive (40gb) is just about dead, along with the ram i'm getting for it, I'm hoping this upgrade should make a difference to the speed and battery life.

So you're placing better reliability in the same list as limited write cycles eh? Yes, that makes perfect sense.
If you want to be pedantic then maybe substitute better reliability for better durability. :p

As there are no moving parts then you could drop a laptop with an SSD in and you would not lose your data. Try it with a laptop with a mechanical HDD and you probably will...

not if you bung the hdd in the freezer :D

Thats another good point, laptops benefit a lot from SSDs, the ruggedness factor that you can pick it up and move about etc.. without worrying about the hdd and the fact that the majority of laptops use 5400rpm or slower hdds, a SSD will be a major speed boost.

I still don't get why people rag on ssds so much, i replaced my velicoraptor 300gb Raid 0 with a single 100gb Vertex LE at the time and it was so much better. Now have 2 120gb 2E in RAID 0 and its smoking, the LE is in a laptop replacing the original 120gb 5400rpm jobbie, night and day performance difference.

I picked up my 120GB one for just a shade over £200 and I have paid that much for a high performance hard drive, so I disagree that the pricing is silly, it is if you want a 200GB or higher one but you can get a reasonable price 120GB one

Awesome for unpacking, photo editing, loading applications and heavy loading games but other than that. I'd get another drive just for storage, SSD'S are a waste of money for what they offer currently. They do not need to be as expensive as they are

Even though i have one because my old drive was ******

Well if luck is on your side then recovery is possible, you still have to replace a dead HDD tho! ;)

In fact only today I've been given a laptop to fix where the HDD has died due to shock, I think that SSD's make more sense in laptops compared to desktops right now...

its not just OS that boots faster. everything goes faster, i had velociraptor before and yes it was fast but nothing compared to my ssd.

why did i go for ssd....because i could !! it wasnt to make it faster it was purely WOW look what i can buy cos i got money burning hole!!

buy velociraptor for £113 or buy ssd for £113
the 2 main differences are really size of space and speed. do you choose speed over space??

my brother has very similar pc specs to me but i have ssd with my games on seperate hdd, i still load games faster than he does with his mechanical hdd with games on same as os.

Main issue for me is the price and size:storage ratio (i.e. space they take up in your case while offering only limited storage capacity). I'd have to remove a 300GB drive to fit one, which wouldn't be the end of the world (would be nice to retire my IDE drive) but it would just feel inefficient replacing it with something smaller capacity wise.

you dont have to put the SSD where the HDD was, SSD's are so small and light and dont need cooling so you can just velcro it anywhere inside ur case and keep your HDD where it was for main storage :)

It seemed like the sensible choice when i got my latest laptop that instead of having a much slower 2.5 inch drive i should get a ssd instead. Im getting impatient even waiting 30 seconds for my laptop to boot up now, i would probably be tearing my hair out if i went back to a conventional drive, its the same with loading times in games.

It is a bit restrictive having so little space to play around with when you have games installed but i generally find if i stop playing a game i wont play it for some months, even years so its really not much of a bother to uninstall and reinstall if needed, im sure my ssd has saved me more than a few hours in loading times already so its not like its costing me extra time.

Id admit if i had a desktop i would probably go for a conventional hard drive as they are a fair bit cheaper and more flexible but i have never regretted my decision to go for a ssd in my current laptop especially when i compare it to my older one.

Ive got a portable 2.5inch hd for anything i want to take with me that i dont need on the main drive.

I have a 120gb ocz vertex and have had it for around 16 months now. People can spend hundreds on graphics cards, processors etc. Why not a hard drive?

Well it's a luxury but once you go back to mechnical as I am at the moment it's difficult! So much faster in hindsight.

I don't see myself needing an SSD in my main rig for a fair few years yet, I don't do anything on it that has a need for the speed, heck, the limiting factor on that machine is the poor broadband speed we get!

On my netbook though, hmm, the extra battery life and reduced risk of shock damage might be worth it if the price drops 50%, untill then I'll happily just amble along as is.

I can't understand anyone who says there isn't a noticeable difference, or it's just an improvement in boot speed.

Unless you've bought one and used one for a while then people shouldn't comment. The difference for me was massive. I had a RAID 0 setup on Win7, switched to a 64GB SSD for OS, main apps and games and the difference is night and day. It is easily, by a country mile, the best upgrade in terms of pure performance I have made in recent years.

Boot is quicker yes, but so is everything else and as all my apps are on the SSD to o,they are just so much more snappier. Stuff like web browsers and MS Word load instantly. When I come to work and use machines with mechanical drives it's painfully slow and I'm actually finding myself getting frustrated.

The only negative is Cost:Capacity ratio, so ask yourself which is the more important to you speed or capacity, if the answer is speed and you have the £££'s, it's a no brainer. End of.
